Does anyone else's heart sink at the thought of clothes shopping?

I'm going on holiday soon. I have nothing to wear. Actually I've nowt to wear when I'm not on holiday! Have a uniform for work, the rest of the time I look passable actually I'm starting to look very tatty

I've got money to spend but I go into town and practically have an anxiety attack as I enter the shops!

Anyone else feel this way?

corythatwas · 05/07/2017 13:02

I hate it. Always smile wryly at the posts implying that mothers and daughters have a special bond because they can enjoy clothes shopping together (and spa days- another thought to make my flesh crawl). Dd learnt a long time ago that I'm a complete killjoy around the changing rooms; I just look so bored and miserable it saps the joy out of her day.

FaintlyBaffled · 05/07/2017 13:07

Yes, I'm exactly the same. Since my early teens I have been mystified by the female ability to mooch round shops for hours on end in search of the perfect dress/ shoes/ top etc.
I therefore have a set list of approved clothing suppliers, all of which require very little input on my behalf. Jeans are always Levi's, ordered online or from eBay in exactly the right size for me. Shirts and tshirts come from the local country store and are normally Barbour or Joules. Shoes are generally from

LadyinCement · 05/07/2017 13:16

Oh, yes, spa days. I went on one once. I was soooo uncomfortable. And bored.

Ditto hairdressers. How can anyone enjoy having a hairdo? Mil used to go every week. Every week! After reading a couple of ancient OK magazines and two minutes of awkward chitchat about holidays, I get the screaming abdabs and want to escape.

The thing is I used to enjoy clothes shopping when I was a teen and in my 20s. After that I guess I was in a fog of mum style and then I looked in a mirror and saw my mum in there. I wonder if Eastex is still going?!

Iamastonished · 05/07/2017 13:35

I'm jealous that do many of you are a standard size and shape, and can order online.

waitforitfdear · 05/07/2017 13:37

Only with my twin teenage dds!

I usually hand over the cash and retreat to a cocktail bar Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 05/07/2017 14:00

Iamastonished if you're tall you have virtually no choice but to shop online. I'm always ordering many different options / sizes and sending stuff back which doesn't fit. It's either do that, or go without clothes, nothing to do with being a 'standard' size / shape. #dramatic

TriJo · 05/07/2017 14:08

Yup, especially because I'm in the awkward first trimester nothing fits stage! I'm showing early because it's #2 but not big enough for proper maternity clothes.

ladymarian · 05/07/2017 14:28

YANBU. Me too. I hate clothes shopping. I'm short with a large bust, hideously fat legs ( IMO) and am currently fatter than I'd like to be so it's usually almost impossible to find anything suitable. Don't get me started on shoes either......

The80sweregreat · 05/07/2017 14:33

Eastex is still around, debenhams had a cncession there for years.
Worth looking up, but their clothes are not fashionable. Classic i suppose you could say

washinggotdarkedon · 05/07/2017 15:51

See, I made the mistake of venturing onto Style & Beauty a while ago. Now there are some wise and witty MNers on there but I also discovered that Fat Face, Joules and White Stuff are considered mumsy and frumpy. But I quite like some of their stuff!

OP posts:
Roughlyroughrough · 05/07/2017 15:53

I'd love to be able to buy what I like and what suits me but I can't. So yes, I hate clothes shopping.

The80sweregreat · 05/07/2017 15:54

Fat face frumpy? I imagined the yummy mummies going there.

KoalaDownUnder · 05/07/2017 15:57

I love having new clothes.

I hate shopping for them!

I'm not even an unusual size or shape, I just hate all the faffing around. Also, I only ever like stuff I can't afford. #firstworldproblems

Aquamarine1029 · 05/07/2017 16:19

I HATE shopping. Any kind of shopping, well, except for food because I love to cook. It's not that I can't find clothes, as I'm in good shape, but I just hate it. I don't like spending money on clothes, and all of the commercialism just depresses me. Everywhere you turn there's junk for sale. I do all of my shopping online now.

2017SoFarSoGood · 05/07/2017 16:21

I've gained so much weight I can't bear the shame of nothing fitting in a normal store. I love clothes but hate the disappointment of shopping.

Have found the magic of a capsule wardrobe is the answer. Find a designer you like that likes your body size and shape, and invest in several pieces to mix and match. I feel so much more confidant and stylish it is well worth the money. Universal Standard is my life saver. Great quality and no fuss. Definitely not mumsy!

If it makes you feel any better, big boobs can actually make things worse! I think everyone gets it in their head that bigger boobs will balance you out or make you look feminine, but actually they can just end up making you look dumpy and frumpy. Especially if you have a large tummy! You can end up looking like a big box of blobs! I have big boobs myself (FF- and not lovely and pert sadly), they are one of my biggest insecurities.

Iamastonished · 05/07/2017 17:24

Elephant17 And my biggest (or smallest in my case) insecurities is the meagreness of my chest. I am pear shaped and just look scrawny above my waist and flabby below my waist.

I quite like clothes shopping because I don't do it unless I want to, and I never go when it is busy. I don't find changing rooms hot as most shops now have aircon in these days.

As another poster has pointed out, the key to successful clothes shopping is planning. Do your research online before you go.

"Do people have wardrobes of clothes.?"

I don't know anyone who doesn't have a wardrobe full of clothes, plus drawers with things like socks and underwear. How do you manage to have so few clothes? Do you not work or own any smart clothes?

FlowerPowerPotter · 05/07/2017 17:46

I've recently ditched high street shopping - absolutely nothing I liked or could fit into. I'm now addicted to buying 50s dresses online because as long as I get the bust /waist right, it doesn't matter how wide my hips are, the dress will still fit and look good!

Just spent another £60 on a couple of dresses from Lady V London - beautiful prints and great quality. I would very much recommend this website to anyone else who hates shopping and likes 50s style dresses.

FlowerPowerPotter · 05/07/2017 17:52

Looking forward to receiving this one - there is a discount code PAYDAY20 to get 20% off which helps!

What about going to a ood charity shop like St. Peter's hospice I have got some really lovely things there and no fuss

washinggotdarkedon · 05/07/2017 18:07

Wardrobe full of clothes does not equal anything to wear!

OP posts:
Iamastonished · 05/07/2017 18:13

The charity shops in my nearest town are generally full of Primark/M and S/Next clothes. Never anything high end. I did manage to find a pair of very smart unworn wide leg black trousers that were from Next though. A bargain at £4.00. They still had the original labels on.

MagicMoneyTree · 05/07/2017 18:42

Yep. Hate it. Always have done.

ragged · 05/07/2017 18:43

I don't think online shopping would work for me.
Most clothes are cut to fit pear-shape but I am hour glass.
Big shoulders, Long torso with short legs, to boot.
I don't usually like tunics but most every other style top was too short for years, ever since XL became WIDE instead of LONG.
Online clothing rarely gives enough measurements for me to tell if fit would suit.

Plus I just don't care what I look like. And the prices of new items make me go Shock.

Imaginosity · 05/07/2017 18:46

Go on a quiet day. Bring a friend if you can. Pick one shop you like. Ask one of the assistants to pick out a few outfits. Try them on over the course of about 15 or 20 mins. Ask the assistant and your friend if they are nice. Pick a couple of outfis, pay and leave. That's what i do a few times a year. Stress free!
