To ask why is everyone obsessed with unicorns?

Unicorn cake, unicorn hair, unicorn drinks...it's everywhere. When did this become a thing? What started it? What's next?

It's a bit odd that adults follow these trends as they pop up. Prosecco, gin and pugs being just 2 "trends" that I can think of in recent years.

It reminds me of year 8 when everyone in my class were obsessed with the colour purple and kickers shoes.

I thought unicorns was over and done with last year and everyone had moved on to Pusheen.

I don't know but as I've alternated between what is now 'unicorn hair' and 'mermaid hair' for the past 15 years I am a little pissed off, coz now i need to find a new thing because there are all these stunningly beautiful young ladies copying my hair and doing it better than me. see also the current obsession with glitter, I've been mod-podging glitter to everything since I learned not to eat glue, it's not cool now everyone's doing it. And bright colour foods and unnecessary sprinkles

Because they're ridiculous and real life is slightly depressing (politics, wars, poverty etc)

I used to collect unicorn ornaments 18 years ago the current trend has just made it easier to reignite my ancient obsession.
It's pineapples for the summer, you only have to check primarks home stuff to see whats coming up.

I mentioned this to my husband and FIL earlier and they didn't understand what I was on about, I'm glad it's not just me! Unicorns are big and so are mermaids, take a look at the make up section in Boots or Superdrug and there's loads of either unicorn or mermaid themed make up. I bought an eyeshadow palette recently called Mermaids vs unicorns.

I'm 28 and I love mermaids AND unicorns and think they're a lot cooler than vampires or zombies (which have both been big in the recent past). If you crossed a mermaid with a unicorn wouldn't you end up with a narwhal? (I love narwhals too. ) Picture is 'Forbidden Love' by Teeturtle.

DS1 was arsing around in the park earlier whilst his icecream (chocolate) melted & it + rainbow sprinkles dripped down my hand. Of course, half of the sprinkles are now transferred into my handbag after me delving around for a tissue.

Mermaids are the current rising trend. Unicorns will be old hat soon enough.

Everything mentioned on this thread is so yesterday already.

It's all cath kidson faux kitsch on acid. Skulls, cowboys, cactus plants, flamingoes, clowns, bears, bunnies, angels, stars, hearts, rainbows, bloody prosecco, don't even mention gin, bunches of flowers and of course unicorns. And zombies. Babies. Kittens. Mermaids. Giraffes, keys.

It's true that the mermaid craze is well and truly underway. You can go to mermaid school and buy a mermaid outfit with a very realistic tail that you can actually swim in. (To be clear I'm not doing any of that)

There are actual professional mermaids too. The YouTube videos of them swimming are quite beautiful.

Okay, who mentioned Pusheen? There's Pusheenicorn and Mersheen, which fits in with the theme of the thread nicely. I love Pusheen too. The Pusheen section in Claire's is my happy place and I own a Pusheen stuffy. (I'm not going to deny it's escapism from the crapness of my current situation. I also love cats and can't have one at the moment, so she's my pet that I can cuddle when I feel sad.)

kids and grand are more the dragons and wolves sort.

Momma It's only a theory, but it makes perfectly logical sense to me! Though I am not responsible for anything that may happen if you happen to wake your husband.

My main issue with it is this- most 'unicorn' things don't have horns or anything identifyingly unicorn on them...

Pink and swirly or sparkly doesn't equal unicorn to me at all

(Rainbow I can kind of get though as they're often depicted with rainbow names...)
