AIBU to use bleach to clean the loo?

Just had lunch with a rather sanctimonious friend, who had spent all morning cleaning his bathroom. It turns out he doesn't use bleach or anything but eco-products, and it takes ages (tbh, I've noticed how grimy his loo is before, so I don't think he cleans it often).

A squirt of bleach down the loo and the occasional wipe with a bit of tissue is all it takes in my household, but apparently I "don't care about the environment at all" because I use bleach.

AIBU?

Just looked up the Loogun. Wow! Thankyou Ontherise, will be getting one!

YANBU.

And your mate is being U for having a manky loo. I worked in a place where we only used eco stuff down the loo but there were no stains at all (they were cleaned every day of course, using a bog brush). There are no excuses, he's just rank.

I used eco loo stuff til I had kids that piss every fucking where…but now bleach and a brush it is, and eco stuff everywhere else.

"SDTG suspect your sis isn't too hot on housework if her shower is opaque. Vinegar is very environmentally friendly and will remove limescale quickly and efficiently."

@SabineUndine - I suspect you are right!

Looking into all this, thanks MN. Not on mains drainage like hundreds of thousands in the countryside. I know our sewage store (a brick built thing of early 20C engineering) used to sort itself out but now with washing machines/dishwashers has to be pumped out. In very rainy weather the top bit (water) discharges to a nearby field. So I'll look at the use of bleach.... and the Loo Gun if anyone else recommends it.

AND PLEASE DON'T PUT ANY WIPES even if they claim to degrade down loos. We had the garden covered by shit when neighbours had a numpty friend staying tossing wetwipes down the loo and everything blocked and overflowed. That's countryside for you but think what it does to towns and cities. And who puts all the fat down their sinks which cause those fat mountains?

OnTheRise · 05/07/2017 15:09

milliemollie, it might be worth looking into installing new soakaways for your system. If it used to be fine but now overflows and has to be pumped out more often (they should always be pumped out every few years) then it could be your soakaways have got clogged up. It happened to us (we're in the countryside too) and we swapped the soakaways for reed beds, and now all is well.

It's easy to get overcharged for these systems, by the way. We put our own new septic tank in for about £2,500, and it took us less than a week. The reed beds took another week and the only cost was to get a digger to dig out the holes, and then we had to connect them with pipes and plant them up with reeds, which cost relatively little. Right now the top bed is full of lovely yellow flag irises, which look lovely every year.

No bleach here -septic tank. Which means we would also pay a rapid penalty for putting wipes down the toilet.

Toilet brush, replaced as needed, jif and a small amount of anti bac spray. Toilet with no shame.

Hate your kids? Throw bleach and wipes down the toilet, stuff up the planet for them.

Bit dramatic. I think there are worse things going on environmentally than squirting bleach down the loo.

Neuroticwoman · 05/07/2017 22:01

Areyoufree and that smells like bleach? Shock I have clearly led a very sheltered life....... Grin

ethelfleda · 05/07/2017 22:06

I use bleach in the loo!
But I recycle as much as poss and Chuck my leftovers in the compost and I don't eat meat so there is my contribution to the environment Smile

Areyoufree Gentleman's custard? Think your gentleman needs some penicillin. :o

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 05/07/2017 22:47

For those who don't use a loo brush how exactly do you get poo off the sides of the loo (inside the loo not outside!)??

RandomDent · 05/07/2017 22:51

Toilet paper.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 05/07/2017 23:09

Wait.. bleach doesn't clean the toilet bowl but only makes it look white? I used to give a good scrub while using garlic, my mum said bleach is easier with no scrubbing and I've been using it for a few weeks now. If it isn't cleaning it I'll go back to scrubbing.

Giddyaunt18 · 06/07/2017 13:00

Of course bleach cleans, it kills most germs. I would always use something to clean with though, either a brush or sponge.

lemureyes · 06/07/2017 13:07

If he pops some of his eco toilet cleaner down the loo each night and gives it a scrub in the morning it shouldn't be manky. Also a quick wipe down every couple of days with the eco cleaner should keep it clean. I really like Method eco cleaner 😀

QuackPorridgeBacon · 06/07/2017 17:43

Thanks giddy I usually use the duck stick thing, only with my mum saying you don't have to scrub I stopped. I'll definitely be starting again now though.

TIALEIGHANNE31 · 06/07/2017 17:49

I clean my whole bathroom and kitchen work tops with bleach about 3/4 times a week!
