AIBU to use bleach to clean the loo?

Just had lunch with a rather sanctimonious friend, who had spent all morning cleaning his bathroom. It turns out he doesn't use bleach or anything but eco-products, and it takes ages (tbh, I've noticed how grimy his loo is before, so I don't think he cleans it often).

A squirt of bleach down the loo and the occasional wipe with a bit of tissue is all it takes in my household, but apparently I "don't care about the environment at all" because I use bleach.

AIBU?

Bleach and toilet brush here. Two or three times a week, and as necessary.

noramum · 04/07/2017 15:17

We use bleach every now and then we we do a general deep clean like all hard to reach spots. The weekly clean is done with Ecover and a good scrub. Toilet is always clean.

I hate the smell of bleach and most cleaning products.

toilet wipes are only used by DD when she does a poo.

Liiinoo · 04/07/2017 15:23

I very rarely use neat bleach - I have had the same bottle for a couple of years. I think people confuse bleaching with cleaning, but pouring bleach won't remove dirt, just kill some of the germs on it.

I clean my loos with a 5p scouring sponge and a sprinkle of Vim. I wear disposable rubber gloves and scrub vigorously under the rim, round the sides and under the u bend. I can do all four loos in under 15 minutes and they are spotlessly clean and smooth. I then throw the sponge and gloves away. In between times a flush and a scrub with a loo brush when required keeps everything fresh.

I love bleach, and chuck it down the toilet a couple of times a week. Nothing else will clean and kill germs as well.

The article linked to above was absolute nonsense about household bleach being harmful to the environment; it didn't acknowledge any difference between household and industrial bleach, nor between household bleach and chlorine gas used as a chemical weapon Hmm

Sunshinegirls · 04/07/2017 15:26

I clean toilet every day at least once by spraying it with method eco cleaner then using toilet roll to wipe clean then flush the loo roll. I will use a small bit of bleach on it once a week/10 days. Definitely wouldn't use it everyday as it is evil gear.

PinkHeart5911 · 04/07/2017 15:26

I love the smell of bleach!

Tolilet here gets bleach every two days, it's sparkling clean

Iris65 · 04/07/2017 15:26

I use strong bleach once a month and Ecover a couple of times a week. I don't like the smell as I have asthma and it is a trigger for me.

SummerMummy88 · 04/07/2017 15:28

I love a bit of bleach, but not for the toilet you need something with added lime scale remover don't you?

FromAtoBin21months · 04/07/2017 15:42

What's wrong with a loo brush? How else do you clean the skiddies? (I dread to think to be honest)

donajimena · 04/07/2017 15:48

Bleach does remove skids. It does not bleach them white. I've cleaned a million bogs these weekend (only slight exaggeration) and you don't need to bloody scrub it! Limescale is a different matter.

BlurryFace · 04/07/2017 17:51

Bleach+bog brush. I don't think the bog brush is that germy as I use it with the bleach then flush the toilet over it to rinse it out and in any case I don't bloody brush my teeth with it, eh?

Giddyaunt18 · 04/07/2017 18:50

I bleach once a week. Have tried those eco products but they just don't do the job. I use a squirt of bleach in hot water to wash my kitchen floor and other hard floors too and for the kitchen, always well diluted and not daily.

Giddyaunt18 · 04/07/2017 18:52

Oh and I squirt toilet cleaner around the rim inbetween the weekly toilet scrub.

Nikephorus · 04/07/2017 19:09

Toilet cleaner once a week & the loo brush - which gets replaced regularly.
And definitely don't flush anything artificial down the toilet except toilet paper - next door kept flushing "flushable" wipes away and the guy who came to unblock it for them told me that none of those things are really designed to be flushed in our sewers (I was out there being nosy)
And as for the prat where I used to live who flushed nappies away and buggered the drains for most of the houses in the road.....

Lime removing Harpic or the water turns the bowl brown and scummy in days. Scrubbed with a loo brush. We have sensitive digestive systems in this household, and I'm not pissing around with any silly non-brush methods of removing the aftermath of an evacuation Grin

For the toilet seat (alas, I own two small boys of dubious aim...) I use antibac spray and toilet roll and flush.

jodiemumtodavid · 04/07/2017 19:21

Oh my days Angry Toilets are full of so many germs and bacteria, and not your so called friendly germs either but proper nasty germs nasties. If there is one place in the house where bleach is needed it is the loo.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/07/2017 19:22

Dsis uses only Ecover products, and lives in a very hard water area, and below the water line, her loo is black. Her clear glass shower screen is completely opaque too. I understand why she wants to use the eco-friendly products, but frankly every surface in her house that gets wet (sinks, draining board, bath, shower screen, kettle etc) are caked with limescale and look filthy.

OnTheRise · 04/07/2017 19:57

I use a LooGun because toilet brushes are vile. But if you're going to use a toilet brush they're not for scrubbing (ahem) deposits off the surface, they're for cleaning a deposit-free toilet every now and then.

I squirt the odd dash of bleach in the loo, perhaps once a week. I also spritz the loo bowl with Zoflora solution every evening before I go to bed (Pink Grapefruit is my current favourite but we have Hyacinth upstairs at the moment). And that's about it.

I use disinfectant wipes to clean the outer surfaces but I do not flush them because they clog everything up.

SabineUndine · 04/07/2017 20:20

SDTG suspect your sis isn't too hot on housework if her shower is opaque. Vinegar is very environmentally friendly and will remove limescale quickly and efficiently.

lidoshuffle · 04/07/2017 20:36

A spoonful of Vanish powder (or Lidl equivalent!) is great for getting the under the water bit of the loo, where the brush doesn't quite reach spotless. And without any hard work!

Neuroticwoman · 05/07/2017 11:41

What on earth is 'jizz'?

Areyoufree · 05/07/2017 11:51

Neuroticwoman "gentleman's custard"...

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 05/07/2017 12:05

Yanbu! Although as my son misfires it takes more than a wipe to clean around the loo at times Grin

llangennith · 05/07/2017 12:05

Never flush any kind of wipe down the toilet! They may be 'flushable' but they don't break down or disintegrate and cause major blockages once they accumulate.
