AIBU to use bleach to clean the loo?

Just had lunch with a rather sanctimonious friend, who had spent all morning cleaning his bathroom. It turns out he doesn't use bleach or anything but eco-products, and it takes ages (tbh, I've noticed how grimy his loo is before, so I don't think he cleans it often).

A squirt of bleach down the loo and the occasional wipe with a bit of tissue is all it takes in my household, but apparently I "don't care about the environment at all" because I use bleach.

AIBU?

I bloody love bleach Wink

Neuroticwoman · 04/07/2017 14:48

Bleach every other day. Love the smell.
Can't stand loo brushes - they are the work of the devil.

PeachPants · 04/07/2017 14:49

I use bleach on the toilet but not on anything else as the smell reminds me of jizz Grin ready for the comments

MIL has brainwashed DH that bleach is a gift from god and should be used on every damn thing you can. So my house often smells like jizz. (IMO!)

Eco friendly products are astonishingly expensive compared to the raw ingredients. Its white vinegar or citric acid, not brown malt vinegar. Plus some orange, lemon or grapefruit oil for a nice scent. It will remove limescale, whereas bleach just bleaches it white.
Citric acid degrades in 3 days, chlorine mixes with other chemicals to produce toxic waste.

I do use bleach, and harpic,I also use a toilet brush..I buy cheap ones and replace once a month..

Can I ask the people who don't use a loo brush..How do you clean in the water?

DJBaggySmalls · 04/07/2017 14:51

PeachPants Yes it does! I thought I was the only one!!!

scampimom · 04/07/2017 14:52

PeachPants omg, you're right!

cjt110 · 04/07/2017 14:52

Bleach is fine. But it has to be pine scented. Not lemon or arctic blast. PINE.

PeachPants · 04/07/2017 14:52

Oh thank goodness DJ! I was ready for all the Hmm comments about my DH Grin

SlothMama · 04/07/2017 14:53

I use bleach once a week to clean mine, but I have to use a heavily scented one as I cannot stand the smell of bleach! I seem to be a minority on this thread for hating it haha

WindwardCircle · 04/07/2017 14:55

I bleach my bathroom loo once a week, but I can't use bleach on the downstairs one as it has a macerator and bleach can destroy the switch instead which triggers it. Even though I put a glug of bathroom cleaner down it and give it a scrub with the dreaded loo brush it's still noticeably grubber looking than the bleached loo.

cjt110 · 04/07/2017 14:56

Oh I bought some new cream cleaner the other day in my shopping. This thread has made me want to get home and give the bathroom a spruce. I love a clean smelling and shiny bathroom til DH goes and takes a dump Grin

I've got wall to wall Ecover cleaning products but I still use bleach for the loo and any little accidents the cat has.

MaisieDotes · 04/07/2017 15:00

I don't use bleach because a) it doesn't "clean" so much as bleach the dirt

Well it cleans in the sense that it kills bacteria as well, though scampi

I love bleach. I would use it much more if I wasn't worried about the DC licking it somehow (believe me it's a valid worry).

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2017 15:00

Bleach is horrible and it makes me feel sick. If i smell it in someone's house I assume there's been some sort of D&V bug going on.

I think you need more interesting friends if that's the quality of conversation over lunch TBH.

Aye, well, hot water will kill bacteria just as effectively, without poisoning anyone. Or smelling of...ahem....gentleman's custard.

MaisieDotes · 04/07/2017 15:02

I was going to say don't let sparklingbrook see this thread!! Grin Grin

MsSusanStoHelit · 04/07/2017 15:03

My husband is in charge of bathroom cleaning and he uses a sponge that's at the end of it's useful life to do the loo cleaning with whatever cleaner I've bought, usually something like Flash that was on special offer.

Personally I believe bleach is the only way so I usually slop a bit down there mid week.

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2017 15:04

I am heaving already Maisie. Bleurgh. Sad

velvetcandy · 04/07/2017 15:04

Good swig of bleach every few days never brush it or anything. Wipe the seat with loo roll and spray bleach then just put the paper down the loo.

LittleCandle · 04/07/2017 15:08

Bleach in this house. Once a week as standard and then when needed. We also have a loo brush (two in fact, one upstairs and one down) and they get wielded when necessary, too. I also use wipes to give the toilet seats a clean, but always bin them, never flush them, even if they say they are flushable.

I don't care if anyone judges me. As long as bleach is available, I shall use it.

picklemepopcorn · 04/07/2017 15:15

I use loo roll to clean the loo. Spray with some kind of all purpose cleaner, then wipe round and flush. Occasional eco loo cleaner or bleach for the bowl and rim.

DopeyDazy · 04/07/2017 15:16

Bleach and Viakal a couple if times a year
