To get my dp to tie dental floss round anal skin tag

I have over the past year developed an anal skin tag. GP said that is what it is, and said I could ask to have it removed but it's just 'cosmetic' and will take a while for referral to go through.
It is skinny and long and shaped like a sausage.
My dp says it is off-putting. He also says that he thinks skin tags can be got rid of by tying dental floss at the base. They then apparently shrivel up and die due to lack of blood.
AIBU to consider allowing him to do this?

Whatever you do, don't do it yourself. It's not like a normal skin tag, it's probably the result of a shrivelled pile. Everything I've read about removal of anal skin tags says it's absolute agony and not to do it. My GP said not to do it. My aunt had hers removed and regretted it due to the post procedure pain, she begged me not to get it done. I'm learning to live with the octopus growing out my arse after pregnancy piles, as not one person discussing their removal has said it was worth it. You're left with open wounds on your anus while it heals. Your husband will love gawping at that! Get your husband to befriend it or just accept you're human and have minor anal imperfections. Chances are you'll gether more every time you have piles.

Iwillonlyeatbeans, that made me laugh so loud I made the damn dog bark!

squoosh my point is when something is attached to your skin and you pull it, it hurts, because it pulls your skin.

But a true skin tag doesn't have nerve endings so should not hurt if some floss is tied around it. If it hurts there's a good chance it's something other than a skin tag.

@CosmoClock

I linked to 'that' thread earlier on.

As an HCP I'm always fascinated at the levels of self surgery people indulge in!

Music I have a tale Blush

I once had my tongue pierced, but I have a tendency to over-heal and so grew a weird protuberance under my tongue that sort of curled around the bar. It was gross (I had a similar incident as a child where a bit at the back of my gums tried to grow forward over the tops of my molars).

Anyway, I was in another country visiting dad's relatives (different language, so no medical help without my dad getting involved) and my little cousin expressed horror at my tongue tag. This played on my mind, so I got a little bit drunk, found some iodine, thoroughly cleaned a pair of toenail clippers and then cut the bugger off. Under poor lighting I might add! It hurt a bit but has never come back Grin

I should try the same approach with tags located elsewhere but am a bit older and more nervous now!!

caffeinestream · 05/07/2017 08:25

Anal ones aren't the same as others because of their location and the massive risk of infection.

I get them occasionally in other places and happily remove them with floss or tag bands that you can get off amazon, but I would never touch them down there - too much risk. Even GP's don't like removing them!

If it's not bothering you or causing you pain I would honestly just leave it. If your DP is that shallow that it bothers him, he needs to get a bit of a grip!

Blimey @LaContessa that was remarkably stupid brave considering how much your tongue could have bled!

Having said that, I've done multiple piercings on myself using a kilt pin and also pierced my nose using a slightly rusty carpet tack. Never did me any harm Grin

LaContessaDiPlump · 05/07/2017 09:02

Music I know Blush I did an initial recce (whilst NOT drunk) with a torch and mirror to assess whether vasculation had occured, and concluded that there weren't any big vessels. I did disinfect the area afterwards and used a heavyduty mouthwash for a few days - as a microbiologist I was more concerned with infection than anything else!

I do wonder if maybe HCPs and people who are HCP-adjacent tend to be a bit more cavalier about these things. I knew a medical student (now a junior doctor) who removed her own stitches with nail scissors rather than make a 50 mile round trip back to her home surgery, and I must confess that that attitude struck me as both right and proper....

OMG leave it be. I am a GP. I can't even see colorectal wanting to remove an anal tag. It is a memorium to a past haemorrhoid. I have never referred for this and would never advise people to go for it with dental floss. loads of people have these. It might be easier getting a new husband or putting the light off.

MusicForTheJiltedGeneration · 05/07/2017 09:21

Oh yes yes to home stitch removal @LaContessa - if you have the equipment then it's a shame not to use it Grin

It is a memorium to a past haemorrhoid

I have an entire graveyard on my ringpiece following a traumatic birth. My arse looks like an elderly starfish Sad

Tricksy12345 · 26/03/2018 12:34

Do not do it yourself! I attempted it and it was the worst pain I've ever been through. i'm on my 3rd day recovering from having it removed by the surgeon.
Did you end up having it removed?
