Mullerlight yogurts and mugshots should come with a health warning

I started doing .SW at home with the help of lots of online resources. I've never contemplated going to a class, as years ago I went to a WW one and couldn't bear it.

I hear a SW class is even more cringyBlush
Anyhow, 'syning' (what an awful word) things like houmous and avocado, and demonising olive oil , while pushing shite like mullerlighs and mugshots seems to be the order of the day. (Friend lasted six weeks but has now left)

Looking at the ingredients of both yesterday while shopping, i couldn't help thinking they looked like they were made in a laboratory,- lots of awful additives and chemicals.

AIBU to think Sw shouldn't be allowed to promote these 'foods' when they are anything but healthy.
Also, does anyone know if Mullerlight sponsor Slimming World?

I agree about the yoghurts, but then I'm the same about anything "low fat" or fat free. Partly because they are allowed a 25% margin of error I believe, but mainly because they replace the fat with a load of crap to make it palatable. Fat is not the enemy, provided you choose healthy fats and eat them in moderation.

I know people have had fantastic successes on slimming world but got me it wouldn't work. All the free foods seem to teach people that portion control isnt crucial, judging by the obscenely huge "free" meals my colleague eats for breakfast and lunch Shock

DonaldStott · 02/07/2017 10:22

I don't follow sw anymore as I prefer the no refined carbs way of eating, but I am so fed up of people saying this. Sw promotes healthy eating, cooking with fresh ingredients and lots of fruit and veg.

People who do not look into it properly and choose not to do their research, as you should with any diet that is embarked on, spout this shite. Sw is NOT all about muller lights and mug shots. It is just easy for people to hear and repeat when they want an excuse for not losing weight.

Mrsglitterfairy · 02/07/2017 10:24

I used to do slimming world and while it did really help me to lose 2 stone, there were things such as the mullers that I didn't agree with. I have a friend who goes on at me for having some avocado with my lunch or a handful of plain nuts as they're so bad for you as they have fat in but will happily eat 3 babybel lights followed by a mugshot and 2 mullers. Baffles me

AwaywiththePixies27 · 02/07/2017 10:24

There was a celeb weight loss programme many many moons ago where a doc told the contestants that a certain yoghurt the one you mentioned contains the equivalent of 6tsps of sugar.

Use natural yoghurt instead and in moderation. Much better for you.

cardibach · 02/07/2017 10:25

It doesn't deal with people's issues around portion control, though, Donald. And the ''syns" do encourage choosing manufactured over fresh. OP you should have a look at rebelfit. You would like his message.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 02/07/2017 10:25

I had colleagues doing SW. It's a really weird diet.

They were allowed to eat crisps but a handful of nuts was forbidden.

Mrsglitterfairy · 02/07/2017 10:26

And the free foods things really works if you are sensible and don't pile your plate with pasta. I have started sort of doing slimming world again, just from home and using a lot of the recipes that I used to but also adapting it and I'm noticing a loss each week now

ALemonyPea · 02/07/2017 10:26

I do SW. I don't eat mullerlights or mugshots, they're vile. I prefer going for real food. It's not mandatory to eat them on SW you know.

VelvetSpoon · 02/07/2017 10:27

I agree. I lost loads with SW, but put it all back on. The issue I have is that they don't teach any kind of portion control, it is all about stuffing yourself. One lady used to post a pic of her breakfast, it was a platter of a tin of beans, 3 tomatoes, 3 eggs (fried in the abomination that is fry lite!), a heap of bacon, and 3 or 4 quorn sausages.

And of course it was all syn free so everyone is encouraged to eat as much as poss....

The worst thing for me was them telling people in group when you hadn't lost weight that it was because you'd not eat3n enough Shock

Co1onelblimp · 02/07/2017 10:27

Donald I am losing weight, despite SW, not because of it.
I'm losing it by incorporating healthy fats, like nuts and avocado(demonised by SW)
Also eating dairy and carbs in moderation.it's working for me.

Why are so many people that are not doing SW obsessed re Muller Lights?

It's like an urban myth..if you want to do SW you must eat several Muller Lights per day.

DonaldStott · 02/07/2017 10:29

They were allowed to eat crisps but a handful of nuts was forbidden

Then your friends are thick and do not understand the principles of the slimming world diet.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 02/07/2017 10:29

It is just easy for people to hear and repeat when they want an excuse for not losing weight.

Why is it an excuse? Slimming clubs are businesses after all. The longer they keep you on their books the better profit margin they have for them.

If they really cared they'd offer their 'formulas' for free. They won't because it's no more than a complicated way of your own GP telling you to eat less, move more.

Save your monthly membership fees and invest it into buying yourself fruit & veg instead.

Everything in moderation, even moderation. Smile

nebulae · 02/07/2017 10:31

No food is "forbidden" on SW.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 02/07/2017 10:31

I think slimming world needs to be put into context. If you're someone who used to snack on a whole tub of Ben and Jerrys but is now on slimming world and has a muller light instead, then that's a really positive change for that person. Likewise if you used to eat a family pack of doritos and now have a mug shot that is also a good change to make. From what I've seen of slimming world (been an online member for a few months) some people who come to slimming world have been eating much more than muller lights and mug shots.

VelvetSpoon · 02/07/2017 10:34

Mugshots and muller lites are heavily pushed at SW, and those overpriced hi fi bars.

In the group I used to attend, the leaders would encourage people to eat mullers between meals if they felt hungry! And would regularly post on the group FB page if there were any muller offers at local supermarkets! Anyone who asked for lunch recommendations whilst at work was told to have a mugshot.

Quite a few people in my SW ate no fruit and almost no veg.

Co1onelblimp · 02/07/2017 10:39

It's not just the mullers and the mugshots, it's frylight, those hi fi bars, and encouraging the use of sweetener. It's really unhealthy.
Also, my friend, who is vegetarian was told to snack on ham and chicken between meals if she was hungry, but a little peanut butter on an couple of oatcakes (unless syned) was a big no no, WTf

Same when I used to go to a WW group velvet

Avoid fat and you're on your way to mood crashes, hunger pangs, migraines, low libido and more. People need fat. Those sleek, toned athletes you see do not avoid fat. They do avoid MullerLights and gorging on potato.

However, people who feel bad, feel sluggish, have mood swings and food cravings and generally feel shit about themselves and their health will keep opening their wallets for Slimming World guff and other 'low fat' schemes, because low-fat means sad, ill people who are too fuzzy-headed to see why.

If they became thinner AND happier, they wouldn't keep paying.

It's part of the scam.

See also the business decisions made when it was realised that high sugar foods caused obesity. It was both cheaper to perform, and more lucrative, to remove fat from foods and sell high-sugar 'fat free' ones (that made grumpy people buy more crap) than it was to remove sugar and risk people tasting your unpalatable slop, and also it would have been a kick in the balls for the sugar industry.

HeyRoly · 02/07/2017 10:40

I thinknSW appeals to some people because it's marketed as "you can eat loads and still lose weight!"

Like velvetspoon I've seen friends post photos of their SW meals and have been shocked at the sheer quantity of food. It really doesn't help people address their issues with overeating and portion size.

ItsNachoCheese · 02/07/2017 10:43

Iceland do if you buy 3 sw meals you get a 6 pack of rank tasting cake flavoured mullerlights every so often

Co1onelblimp · 02/07/2017 10:45

At last with WW you learn portion control. I lost two stone with them a few years back. Not saying they're any better though. They also push their ready meals and shite bars.

I did find I could eat out on WW though, unless you're having a JP with beans on .SW you're fucked!

I don't often buy yoghurts but the kids wanted some Peppa Pig yoghurts last week. The sugar content was high, as I expected so I looked at all the other yoghurts. There wasn't a single one that had less than 5g of sugar in it. Think I'll stick to my natural Greek yoghurt, thanks.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/07/2017 10:47

They were allowed to eat crisps but a handful of nuts was forbidden

Incorrect. You can have nuts as a B choice or by synning them. It's actually less restrictive than crisps because they're only allowed as syns.

I'm constantly astonished about the number of people quoting 'facts' about Slimming World when they have no idea what the plan involves, which is to eat a low fat diet full of lean meat, eggs, fish, pulses, fruit, pasta, rice etc, veg and then limited amounts of cheese, nuts, wholemeal bread and cereals and then strictly limited quantities of crisps, chocolate, cake, biscuits, alcohol, white bread etc.

Plus there is always something 'proper' you can eat if you are hungry (eg a tomato omelette takes about 5 minutes and is on plan) and very little weighing, measuring or counting needed. You're supposed to eat a third of your plate as fruit and veg on average too.

How that translates into 'stuff your face with muller lights and mug shots morning, noon and night', I'll never know.
