A Politico piece on the issue.

What is Kris Kobach up to?

Lweji · 04/07/2017 15:11

I can see NK invading the US and Trump will tweet: "What are the Chinese doing about this?"

(I shouldn't have watched that movie)

cozietoesie · 04/07/2017 15:12

As I think I said - upthread perhaps - I wish I'd been a fly on the wall in Kansas on the night that Kobach signed the negative response. Grin

cozietoesie · 04/07/2017 15:13

Not a chance, Lweji. Smile

Yes, it's definitely a good thing! The pretext for collecting this information is flimsy at best (the intelligence community have not found any evidence of voter fraud) and the method of collecting the data (over an insecure online portal rather than state websites) is shoddy.

I don't think this will go anywhere in terms of the push back snowballing against this administration but it is comforting to know there are some "red lines" and that it isn't all party before country.

WorshipTheGourd · 04/07/2017 16:31

Bigly placematting

Lweji · 04/07/2017 16:45

Not a chance, Lweji.

Of what?

NK invading?
DJT tweeting?
DJT placing responsibility on China?

This was published 8 months ago and it's chilling to read now:

For a country so worried about privacy that can't have an ID card (which would solve many problems, including with voters), the information they ask for is very concerning.

In fact, scrap that. I live in a country with ID cards and a national voter register and I wouldn't like the government to link my voting history, any party registration and NI number.

cozietoesie · 04/07/2017 17:08

NK invading.

I make no promises on the other two points. Wink

Has anyone else seen CNN's response to the Gif? Made me Grin

I think that Scrotus and his regime did not realize quite how strong the feeling is about the 'sovereignty of states' (i.e. 'State's Rights') in the US. Whether Dem or GOP each state really feels that we have the right to self govern and the Fed needs to butt out. I would expect that the citizens of traditionally red states would feel even more strongly about this than those of us in blue states so I'm not surprised a bit at GOP governors.

Now if they had said they wanted voter's info from states with a traditionally large immigrant population (most of which are probably blue states), the 'red' population would have been all for it. But now it's 'touching' them, they don't want the Fed Govt (even a GOP one) compiling 'lists' of US citizens that include them!!!

AcrossthePond55 · 04/07/2017 18:06

SanFran That video isn't from CNN. It was done by an Australian comedian named Mark Humphries.

It was still pretty funny though.

CNN's actual response is at the bottom of the article.

Lweji · 04/07/2017 18:08

I've just watched on TV that Junker has vowed not return to the European Parliament after crossing words with its president.
The word ridiculous was used. They sounded like a typical MN thread.
People are getting mad.

Will see if I can find a link.

lionheart · 04/07/2017 18:49

Pain I really like Kendzior and that is a powerful article.

There is something about Trump and companythe ridiculous rhetoric and liesthat gives other deplorables permission to join in with the hate and act upon in in ways that are becoming more and more overt.

As researchers (those hideous academic elites Smile) so often point out--the 'othering' that Orlantina was talking about is a necessary precursor to violence.

Chilling is right.

SanFranBear · 04/07/2017 21:10

Across - I should've put CNN in quotes as it's clearly not them really, given the Aussie accents.. I wouldn't have expected something so daft from them to be honest, they do have a reputation to try & protect. Even more important given the slating they've been getting.

Having said that, according to this article, more people trust CNN than Scrotus anyway:

time.com/4844498/americans-trust-cnn-donald-trump-poll/

cozietoesie · 04/07/2017 21:14

9% of Republicans trust CNN more ?? Smile

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 04/07/2017 21:17

I like kendzior too - I think she's very insightful.

Someone who is less so...

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
Gas prices are the lowest in the U.S. in over ten years! I would like to see them go even lower.

Odd. I don't think I missed the link, but here it is.

Bookmarked for when the internet's not so patchy!

This is from May this year but seems especially poignant on Independence Day:

shareblue.com/former-cia-director-brennan-with-every-last-ounce-of-devotion-to-this-country-resist/

If you have been wondering why the investigations into Russia’s interference in our presidential election matters, former CIA Director John Brennan has a powerful answer.

During the House Intelligence Committee’s hearing on the investigation, Rep. Denny Heck (D-WA) asked Brennan to explain — not just to the committee, but to all Americans — why it matters that we get the full truth of what happened in the 2016 election.

Considering how egregiously the White House has obstructed the investigation, and how Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans in Congress have tried to slow-walk their own investigations, it is a fair question.

HECK: I now pose it to you, sir. Not for my sake, but for America’s sake. As someone who has devoted your entire life to public service, in your own words, please tell my constituents, my neighbors, why they should care. Not just here in Washington, D.C., but in Washington state, and Texas, and Connecticut and points in between. Why should they care? Why do you care, sir?

BRENNAN: Because for the last 241 years, this nation and its citizens have cherished the freedom and liberty that this country was founded upon. Many, many Americans — brave Americans over the years — have lost their lives to be able to protect that freedom and liberty.

They’ve lost their lives also to protect the freedom and liberties of other countries and other peoples around the world. Our ability to choose our elected leaders as we see fit is, I believe, an inalienable right that we must protect with all of our resources and all of our authority and power.

And the fact that the Russians tried to influence that election so that the will of the American people was not going to be realized by that election, I find outrageous and something that we need to, with every last ounce of devotion to this country, resist. And to try to act to prevent further instances of that.

And so, therefore, I believe that this is something that’s critically important to every American. Certainly it’s very important to me, for my children and grandchildren, to make sure that never again will a foreign country try to influence and interfere in the foundation stone of this country, which is electing our democratic leaders.

Our democracy depends on finding the full truth of what happened during our election and ensuring that it can never happen again.
