This is worming its way across my living room. It moves a bit like a caterpillar but it's a maggotty colour. Tell me it's not a maggot? Bleeurgh.

Looks like a maggot to me, we had one a couple of weeks ago just after the cat had devoured a bird yuck. My house is very clean and food is never left out so this must be where it came from.

It really looks like a maggot. Check everywhere for manky food, especially meat. Could there be some lurking in a bag or something? The only time i ever had maggots was when dp forgot his mum had sent him home with some leftover roast meat. The flies had got inside tinfoil and laid eggs. Bish bash bosh maggot party.

Could be a carpet moth.

Pull out any furniture that is against the wall; they like dark spaces like that. If it is carpet moth you should see lots of little white cigarette shapes like the one you've photographed.

Easy to sort out. Vacuum up the ones that are there, then spray a carpet moth spray (available from Amazon / Homebase etc) and leave the furniture an inch or so from the wall. Then check back in a couple of weeks and re-do if needed.

If it's not that then check your loft. Could be wood worm?

Have you got pets? I find in this weather if my cats don't eat all their food quickly, blue bottles lay eggs on the meat. (Remind me why I have cats?)

My friend once found a load of maggots crawling about in her shag pile rug. Turned out a bird had flown down her chimney, got stuck there and died. That's where the maggots had come from 🤢

Our cat brought in a mouse once and left it under the telephone table where we couldn't see it. We eventually noticed because of the smell...

Anyway, that resulted in lots of maggots, but also eggs in the carpet. DH spent many a happy evening pouring hot water on the carpet and then combing it to remove everything. I wasn't trusted to do a good enough job - I was fine with that

It's too fat and naked to be a moth larvae.

Moth larvae spin a 'web' made of the fibres of the cloth/carpet they're munching on to provide camouflage and they're skinnier.
