To hate my conservatory?

Had wanted one for years.
We spent a small fortune having one built 10 years ago. Looks lovely, we spent a lot having the proper blinds fitted etc.
Problems is, we never use it!
It's south facing, boiling hot in the summer and so bright you have to wear sunglasses. Come winter time it's so, so cold. We have a massive radiator in it but it costs a small fortune to heat.
Got a quote to add ceiling and changing the roof to a tiled one so we can make it into a garden/summer room but was quoted £8k 😢
So, basically it's a nice looking spare room, wish I'd spent the money on a new kitchen instead!

Love mine, really opens up the house to the garden, just looking to putting a large lot of decking around it to make it even more inside/outside. It faces due south and really pulls the heat into the house - loads of solar gain. I rarely use the blinds, to be honest. I'm just getting another smaller one put on the south east corner of the house in ten days time as a back porch/utility room, with a laundry pulley to dry clothes in it. I tend to use a small convection heater rather than the radiators; my dad virtually lived in his small conservatory in Aberdeenshire year round with that heater! We even had Christmas dinner in there.

No bugs....

Mind you, it's wood rather than uPVC so don't know if that makes any difference. Tiled floor and glass roof to enjoy the stars with no sodding street lights for half a mile. The new one will be opaque roof and UPVC.

I think it's the best thing I ever did to the house and, as I said, I'm getting a second one for a porch/utility room at the back door into the kitchen garden.

So many people seem to hate conservatories (I've never had one so have no opinion one way or the other), what was the original idea behind them?

Shinycat · 16/03/2018 23:06

I find conservatories pretty useless too tbh. Too hot in summer, too cold in winter. Only ever used the one in our last house 7-10 weeks of the year. Did come in handy to house the rabbit and guinea pig though!

Would never have one again.
