Or consider any kind of direct action against a hospital because of decisions concerning any individual patient.

It's irresponsible.

IMO Grenfell tower is going to end up like this.
These national horrific events have a life cycle - everyone agrees they are terrible, but that's not enough for some, and they spin off widely looking for someone to blame.
Early criticism is shouted down by these people who either have some sort of axe to grind or enjoy the drama of it all. People who are usually unnoticed see the chance for their big moment and grab it.
Experts are scoffed at, opinions become facts and feelings overrule common sense.
Then someone dares to voice concern and everyone watching in the shadows comes out to agree, like on this thread.
Social media allows these echo chambers to build up unchecked and the hysteria grows.
There is a thread on Grenfell on the news board that illustrates this life cycle perfectly. Everyone who disagrees has been rounded on and left, leaving about four posters whipping themselves up into a frenzy at ever announcement as the story moves on.
Social media is a great thing, but it can be dangerous, as these cases show.

Stopnamechanging · 02/07/2017 19:29

cathf I agree completely, the hysteria and blaming will not end well.

DorotheaBeale · 02/07/2017 19:53

It started with Diana, I think; at least, I don't recall anything so frenzied before that. And just like now, all the hysteria did nothing to help the two young boys at the centre of it all. Can only be thankful social media wasn't around back then.

Absolutely spot on.

I'll hazard a guess that Charlie was allowed to die late on Friday
so his family have had some quiet time with the media and the mob distracted
it will be announced some time tomorrow
and the rent a mob will move on without a backwards glance
leaving Charlie's parents to work out if they still have a forward looking relationship.
I do not envy them in any way.

cathf · 02/07/2017 21:11

Yes, I think Diana was the watershed for this sort of mob mentality. I worked for the local press then, and I remember a story about a local shop being vandalised because the owner was not closing 'as a mark of respect' on the day of the funeral.
I remember thinking how mad it was that people were so full of self-righteous indignation that they thought it was acceptable to damage soneone's livelihood.
Completely mad but par for the course these days.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 02/07/2017 21:17

I remember my neighbour wondering if be judged for gardening the time Dianas funeral was on..the world went mad that time. If did have social media then it people posting and trying to out do each other on who was more upset

*GOSH is just trying to limit his suffering. Extensive brain damage, tubes to breath, be fed, unable to move, see or hear. They don't know how much pain he may be in as he can't communicate.

All doctors, including in US, agree there is no hope. Prolonging his life, is prolonging his suffering with no prospect of ever experiencing anything we would associate with living a life.*

The doctors and nurses at GOSH saved my son's life when he was six years old. They continue to monitor and look after him. GOSH is one of THE best hospitals in the world. The care there is incredible: if you ever have the misfortune to have a child in their care (because who ever really wants a sick child) you will know just how fantastic they are. I owe them everything. Even now, 8 years later, I get really emotional thinking of what happened and how amazing they were compared to my local hospital. Every consultant and nurse and physiotherapist I met there went above and beyond the call of duty to help my son. There's not enough money in the world to repay that level of care.

To claim that they would lie, that they would wantonly want to cause suffering and pain... those who do that are scum and have no real understanding of this case and how healthcare works.

DailyMaui · 02/07/2017 21:25

oops - bold fail. Whatever. The sentiment stands.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 02/07/2017 21:38

Now they're saying the hospital never swore a oath in court..do they really belive themselves?!

SerfTerf · 02/07/2017 21:39

They're just not bright people.

GrinGrinGrin
You nailed it there ! I gave up

StrangeLookingParasite · 02/07/2017 22:23

They're just not bright people.

They're collectively as stupid as a box of hair, frankly.

cathf · 02/07/2017 22:25

I left too stop shouting. After I was reported for making personal attacks, I thought it was all getting a bit mad in there!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 02/07/2017 22:40

Me too Cath. Separate topic but I had a chat with a friend who works there in Latimer Road (can't be more specific for obvious reasons ) and it was a dose of good sense for me . Still depressing though . Still
Doesn't change what happened

Oh dear it's all to sad . Off to watch kitten videos or something nicer Sad

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/07/2017 14:02

It appears that even the Vatican is getting itself into a lather over this now: www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jul/02/pope-shows-solidarity-with-charlie-gards-parents

Last time I looked, I didn't think they specialised in, or had any expertise around medical matters? Hmm

Goldenhandshake · 03/07/2017 14:10

Even if all they are doing is standing there with placards, there are are also a shit tonne of journalists there and it is very intimidating for staff and other families entering and exiting the hospital. There are many very, very sick kids in that hospital and their family and friends visiting etc do not need this intimidating presence. It is appalling

CockacidalManiac · 03/07/2017 14:12

What a shower of thick cunts.

MusicForTheJiltedGeneration · 03/07/2017 15:28

^^^^^ Totally agree.

This is confirmed by the fact Donald Trump is now getting involved in this 3 ring circus Hmm

MirandaWest · 03/07/2017 15:33

Well the FB page is getting pretty excited now.

I am continuing to be baffled about what I believe to be right and what actually happens. I feel I don't know whether I am right or wrong any more

BertrandRussell · 03/07/2017 15:36

Oh, ffs!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/07/2017 15:48

I'm getting genuinely confused about this ... it's almost as if these folk believe the whole discussion is only just starting and that a visit to the USA is still a valid option

Aren't they aware that the whole thing's already been through four courts and that a binding decision's been handed down? Haven't they read anything at all about the final judgement?

Come to that, are they aware of anything at all except their own self absorption??

SerfTerf · 03/07/2017 15:49

Trump has now encouraged them. He's expressing willingness to help. It's like bad, plodding, dystopian fiction.

SerfTerf · 03/07/2017 15:50

If you think about it too much or try to inflict rational standards on it you just get a headache @Puzzledandpissedoff
