I just read this and wonder what on earth she is thinking at the age of 2, or am i just old fashioned???

uk.yahoo.com/style/mum-sparks-parenting-debate-dying-two-year-olds-hair-bright-pink-094908558.html

A mum has ignited a parenting debate on Instagram after dying her two-year-old daughter’s hair pink.

Charity Grace LeBlanc, a vlogger from the US, explained in a YouTube video tutorial of the transformation that her daughter Felicity (City for short) had been asking for pink hair for ages.

“I’m dying my two year old daughter’s hair PINK!,” the summary of the video reads. “She has been begging me for a long time so we finally just went ahead and did it! I used Manic Panic Hot Pink which is a direct dye and is safe for kids. It washed out in about three to four days.”

“I’m not lightening the hair because I don’t want to damage her hair, cause she’s still really little,” the mum said during the video clip.

“The dye I’m using is a semi-permanent dye, which will wash out,” she continued.

he mum also took to her Instagram to share a clip of the video and ask other parents if they’d consider dying their own children’s hair “City’s pink hair is now up on my YouTube channel! Link in bio! What do you guys think!? Would you let your daughter do this!?” she captioned the video.

And the post quickly sparked a debate about whether it was OK to dye a toddlers hair.

Some parents were totally against the idea.

“This is so irresponsible of you. Of course she’s going to want it. She’s a kid! She doesn’t know what she wants! And you, the parent should know better! She’s going to be bald by the age of 20,” one parent wrote.

“How can u do that to such a cute child I feel so bad for her,” added another.

“Adorable! but no I wouldn’t do it to my daughter,” another parent commented.

The kid's hair with the unicorn colours and undercut is bloody awesome!

Nothing wrong with using safe dyes on a child's hair.

It's not like she'd punching holes in her ears like some mothers do at that age.

Titsywoo · 29/06/2017 18:46

Hmm I probably wouldn't have done it at 2 if the dye was touching the scalp but if it's using foils or whatever I don't see the issue. I agree that putting her child on youtube is bloody stupid.

I'd use the dye on my kids (12 and 10 and they both want coloured hair in the summer) but I'd be too worried about it rubbing off on their sheets and the sofa.

SJaNH · 29/06/2017 18:47

Why is ok that it only lasts 10 washes/8 weeks/temporary?
Like a 2 year old has any concept of that.

IHaveACrapCat · 29/06/2017 18:57

Is it easy to do with beetroot juice? 3yo DD has been asking for pink hair for a while and I've resisted as I thought I'd get judged to fuck. However, MN seems to think it's fine so I'm willing to reconsider.

SJaNH · 29/06/2017 18:59

Not fine

Nicpem1982 · 29/06/2017 19:10

I wouldn't have a problem with this and would do my dds if she asked, I wouldn't put her on you tube though

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/06/2017 19:25

My nieces have hairslides with pink plaits of artificial hair that they clip in. That might be a compromise for children wanting pink hair?

I think they look awful but they love them Grin.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/06/2017 19:36

I wouldn't do this but I'm struggling to articulate why. In the same way I wouldn't want my toddler wearing make up or wearing a boob tube or whatever.

Some things are for adults, not kids.

BaldricksTrousers · 29/06/2017 19:40

My 7yo DD had her hair pink with Manic Panic last summer, and we have turquoise and purple Manic Panic ready to do this summer. It's safe and temporary...who cares?

I do think that encouraging young ones to be overly interested in their appearance isn't a good thing. I don't remember mine ever being interested in looking at themselves in the mirror at 2. I suppose they do like to copy their mum, playing with make up or trying on her heels but I think dramatically changing their hair colour should be left for when they're older.

Girls have plenty of years ahead to worry about how they look. Let them be children.

Craiconwithit · 29/06/2017 20:13

It's a 'vegetable dye' that contains various chemicals including parabens. I'm allergic to direct dyes such as these. My symptoms include serious breathing difficulties.

It's not a safe product for young children who are still growing. Are the parents who think it's harmless the same one's that don't bother about suncream?

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 20:27

And nothing is completely safe. That's a meaningless blanket statement used by lazy people and advertisers

Well no. Air is not completely safe. Or water. Or any bite of food you eat.

This is basically coloured shampoo though. It's not hair dye.

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 29/06/2017 21:04

when my sister was 2 i died her hair pink, blue, purple and turquoise (because I was a teenager and doing mine and she begged) she looked amazing and I have done her hair a different colour/combination of colours every school holiday since. She's 19 now and it hasn't done her any harm.

Anyone planning to do this over the summer though, bright red leaves a pinkish tinge on blonde hair for ages and Dsis' headmistress did not find it funny.

kali110 · 29/06/2017 21:29

SJaNH because it's notlike apermanent fye that can damage the hair.

Oh yes, because that's an obvious conclusion to make Hmm

Justwaitingforaline · 29/06/2017 21:37

My two year old has asked for bright pink hair when I get married later this year, spurred by watching Trollz...

squishysquirmy · 29/06/2017 21:44

"And nothing is completely safe. That's a meaningless blanket statement used by lazy people and advertisers"

...Well no, nothing is completely safe - its all relative. And a temporary hair dye is safeER than a permanent dye, or a dye which lightens the hair. I think that is what people mean by "safe" - ie, relatively very low risk compared to other products, and compared to other "chemicals" we use on our children's skin.
To those appalled by this: Do you allow your children to have their face painted? Because that contains "chemicals" too (which some children are allergic to). And much more of the product is in direct contact with the skin when your children have their face painted.
The main risk I can see of this hair dye is that it will take a while to wash out, and the main risk of homemade vegetables dyes is that they may rub off onto clothing/bedding. Beyond that, its a bit of (relatively) harmless, silly fun.

squishysquirmy · 29/06/2017 21:46

^ And btw, I do use sun-cream on my child! What a stupid, unfounded extrapolation to make.

Autofillcontact · 29/06/2017 21:47

Yes you're just old fashioned. Everyone dyes their toddlers hair nowadays. Get with the programme

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 21:47

That doesn't even vaguely make sense. The ones shreiking about putting "chemicals" on their hair would be the ones who wouldn't rub chemicals into their skin.

belleandsnowwhite · 29/06/2017 21:51

I can't imagine my 2 Year old asking for hair colour. If it's safe and washes out, no big deal though.

MrsDustyBusty · 29/06/2017 21:52

I personally wouldn't do it, but I can't really say I find this terrible. She clearly had no intention to hurt, harm or humiliate the child and was only doing it as a fun thing.

SJaNH · 29/06/2017 21:52

So the dye is 'safe', great. The mother isn't physically harming her child. But isn't the concern more about encouraging a 2 year old to feel the need to change her physical appearance? What will be next?

SJaNH · 29/06/2017 21:57

BYW.....My 2 year old asked me yesterday if she could have a willy, like her brother....

Teatowelfairy · 29/06/2017 21:57

My 2 yr old asked for pink hair today. She ended up with pink, orange, yellow and blue streaks. Used hair chalks, they're a pita and get everywhere. Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable dying it though. Just bc I'd worry that it wouldn't wash out or she'd have an allergic reaction, or damage her hair.
