I just read this and wonder what on earth she is thinking at the age of 2, or am i just old fashioned???

uk.yahoo.com/style/mum-sparks-parenting-debate-dying-two-year-olds-hair-bright-pink-094908558.html

A mum has ignited a parenting debate on Instagram after dying her two-year-old daughter’s hair pink.

Charity Grace LeBlanc, a vlogger from the US, explained in a YouTube video tutorial of the transformation that her daughter Felicity (City for short) had been asking for pink hair for ages.

“I’m dying my two year old daughter’s hair PINK!,” the summary of the video reads. “She has been begging me for a long time so we finally just went ahead and did it! I used Manic Panic Hot Pink which is a direct dye and is safe for kids. It washed out in about three to four days.”

“I’m not lightening the hair because I don’t want to damage her hair, cause she’s still really little,” the mum said during the video clip.

“The dye I’m using is a semi-permanent dye, which will wash out,” she continued.

he mum also took to her Instagram to share a clip of the video and ask other parents if they’d consider dying their own children’s hair “City’s pink hair is now up on my YouTube channel! Link in bio! What do you guys think!? Would you let your daughter do this!?” she captioned the video.

And the post quickly sparked a debate about whether it was OK to dye a toddlers hair.

Some parents were totally against the idea.

“This is so irresponsible of you. Of course she’s going to want it. She’s a kid! She doesn’t know what she wants! And you, the parent should know better! She’s going to be bald by the age of 20,” one parent wrote.

“How can u do that to such a cute child I feel so bad for her,” added another.

“Adorable! but no I wouldn’t do it to my daughter,” another parent commented.

I've been colouring my hair for a long time but I wouldn't dye a toddler's hair, or let my DC use dye that touches the scalp until they're nearer 16.

It's not just hair if you're putting colour on the roots.

And nothing is completely safe. That's a meaningless blanket statement used by lazy people and advertisers.

I hope nobody has been reassured by the "vegetable dye" angle without looking to see that Manic Panic contains propylene glycol and methyl paraben...? No problem with these ingredients myself, although parabens are touted as the latest devil substance. I get annoyed when people think natural = good and chemical = bad though. Nasty stuff isn't always man made.

So no, hair dye is not for children.

WomblingThree · 29/06/2017 17:36

Like a PP I don't particularly care about the hair, but women (and it always seems to be women) who make their living from vacuous drivelling about their children on the internet irritate me.

Adults who live their lives on Instagram? Go for it! Making money from pimping your kids? Grim.

VestalVirgin · 29/06/2017 17:38

I can't imagine a 2 year old "begging for ages for pink hair".. They're very fickle at that age and can barely talk.

That's what I thought, too, but didn't dare say because as I have no children, I am not completely sure.
A child just getting it into her head to want pink hair is plausible, I just doubt the communication skills. "Ages" must mean days here, as if she had asked for pink hair since age 1, it would have been rather impressive how early she started talking in full sentences ...

LilCamper · 29/06/2017 17:38

My dd had pink and green streaks in her hair over the summer aged 8.

Aged 10 she had a red orange and yellow fringe. Over Easter.

Right now it is ash blond and I think she wants it blue green and purple for the summer.

It's her hair.

toomuchtooold · 29/06/2017 17:41

God even if it damaged the hair or didn't wash out... it's hair. It regrows. I mean different story if it was like a permanent reactive dye, you can get sensitised to them.

Main reason I wouldn't have done it with my 2yo was that she'd have been expecting a new hair colour every week after that... FFS it was (is) bad enough trying to wash the hair, never mind all that palaver!

VestalVirgin · 29/06/2017 17:42

Nasty stuff isn't always man made.

No, but if I wanted to dye a toddler's hair pink I would use beetroot juice or blueberry juice with vinegar. Pretty sure that is harmless.

So, dyeing a 2 year olds hair pink is not the problem here.

Putting videos of a child that age on youtube is more of a problem. Using dangerous dyes is a problem.
Claiming the child wanted pink hair for ages, when actually she isn't articulate enough to ask for anything that detailed is a problem.

Not the pink hair.

Soubriquet · 29/06/2017 17:42

I think it depends on the child re speech.

When my Dd was 2, she was fluent and easily understood. Constantly talked and asked for things and would have easily asked for pink hair if she knew it was possible

My Ds on the other hand is 2 and his speech is just starting to form really. He can say things like "where's juice" and "mummy, daddy, apple, biscuits" but no way would he be able to ask for pink hair

wornoutboots · 29/06/2017 17:45

I sprayed my child's blonde hair pink when he was in reception class (they were going pink for cancer relief, a fundraiser)

"spray in, wash out" it said.

3 months later the pink had finally faded out.... No amount of washing was shifting it.

I suppose there is a big difference between a 4 year old and a 2 year old, though.

Bluntness100 · 29/06/2017 17:50

They're very fickle at that age and can barely talk

Well that one can certainly talk and she clearly confirmed she wanted it and looked very excited to have her mum put the dye on. I suspect it's because, as said, the mum has her hair coloured blue and green.

I totally believe the little girl asked for hers to be done. Prob saw her mum doing hers.

squishysquirmy · 29/06/2017 17:51

"You actually think a 2 year old would ask for bright pink hair?"

Er, yes. That is exactly the kind if thing a 2 year old would ask for!
I have never dyed my toddler's hair, but see no harm in a temporary, safe dye as a one off. Probably less harmful than face paint.

ragged · 29/06/2017 17:51

2yo DD would have preferred purple to pink, actually.

BigDamnHero · 29/06/2017 17:52

It's just hair. I really can't get upset over it!

And DS1 easily had well over 200 words when he was 18 months. By two, he definitely could have articulated something like wanting his hair to be dyed and was very consistent with the things he wanted (though, he's autistic so gets rather obsessive about things sometimes).

LogicalPsycho · 29/06/2017 17:59

It's only hair. I'd rather reserve my anger at parents who mutilate their children's genitals and pass it off as 'their culture' tbh.

raspberrysuicide · 29/06/2017 18:02

Oh no Dd just watched that video clip with me and now wants pink hair too!
I thought it looked cute. I might let dd (she's 6) have pink hair in the holidays !

BishopBrennansArse · 29/06/2017 18:04

Meh.

I did DS1's fringe in the 6 week holidays when he was 5.

He's now 13 and wants blue hair for the 6 week hols, he'll have it too.

DoJo · 29/06/2017 18:07

My one-year-old (20 months) has been asking for plaits in his hair for ages (as in, once every couple of days for a few weeks, maybe three or four). Unfortunately for him, he is not blessed with enough of a barnet for even the skinniest little plait, but if he was asking for something that I could do easily then I probably would.

ExplodingCarrots · 29/06/2017 18:08

Can't see the issue at all. I frequently use bright coloured semi permanent dyes and they are completely safe to use. My 3 year old picks what colour she likes me to have. She's very dark haired so there's no point in even trying to put a colour in her hair.

needsomesunshineandwine · 29/06/2017 18:11

It's not permanent, what's the problem?

My 4 year old had turquoise tips that washed out, as long as it's not permanent or bleached I don't see or have and issue.

kali110 · 29/06/2017 18:12

Its temporary!
temp and semi perm ( which is what manic panic colours are) do not damage the hair!
They will last for a few washes ( pink she'll be very lucky if it lasts 10 washes).
Don't see the problem.

NatalieRushman · 29/06/2017 18:15

I always loved having dark hair as a child until one day at the age of about 5 or 6 I asked my mother to dye it red. She tried, valiantly, but alas, it was not to be. She drew the line at bleaching it.

It's just hair, it gets renewed every few years. I don't really see a problem.

WeAreEternal · 29/06/2017 18:19

She certainly looks happy with it.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/06/2017 18:22

I agree it's not so much the pink hair, it's using her daughter to promote her You Tube channel and get more followers. Making money from splashing your 2 year old all over the internet and shamelessly promoting brands as she is doing here. [cynical face]

Smellbellina · 29/06/2017 18:24

I think the mum is extremely attention seeking and using your child in that way makes for uncomfortable viewing.

It's a veg die, no big deal.

muckypup73 · 29/06/2017 18:36

Smellbellina, I thought that too x
