To be really irritated by this kind of packaging & marketing?!

Just saw auctions for these Itsu chocolate rice cakes on eBay and found the packaging infuriating. Body shaming seems to be everywhere and the FSA don't seem to give a hoot that this on food packaging could be very damaging to people.

I've tried a couple of Itsu products before; an underwhelming 'healthy' crisp type snack and an absolutely vile seaweed snack. Based on that alone I wouldn't purchase their rice cakes. But now I've seen this packaging I'm so annoyed with them.

P.s. I love Kallo chocolate rice cakes and they manage to sell them without shaming anyone who isn't a stick insect in a bikini....

YANBU. Butt cheeks, irrespective of size, would put me off my lunch

but surely by calling the healthy looking ladies on the packet "stick insects" you're guilty of body shaming yourself?

A nicely illustrated design on the packet would probably sell them to me more than the bikini women would, but there's no reason to be nasty about the models because they were chosen for a job.

It's shit but falling for faddy, processed crap like that...which purports to be healthy is silly. Don't buy that shit.

Chocolate and rice cake just shouldn't be togther nevermind the packaging. Who aren't they trying to fool?!

They're meant to sell you the idea that you too can be healthy...and you can...but not via eating that rubbish.

Also skinny shaming is as bad as fat shaming. Image someone saying fat whale, its same as stick insect

I do think it's a bit of a random image to put on a packet. It's a bit 'page 3' surely?

Also, is it just me, or does everyone else think Itsu are trying to imply that you can have a nice figure if you eat their chocolate-covered rice cakes? Rather misleading....

That is NOT bodyshaming - it's not the same as the beach body adverts which tell women they have to look a certain way to be 'ready' for the beach.

DownTown totally agree. Can't understand why food is being marketed that way. I mean, I obviously understand the idea behind the advertising decision. But I think it's a poor one

Oodile, stick insects was a tongue in cheek comment, I doubt the models would be offended. I was a model myself and a thick skin is part of the job. I remember an episode of Embarrassing Bodies where a group of teens were asked to analyse a 'healthy' sized woman in a bikini (they wanted to change a lot and she didn't need changing at all), interestingly the woman was nowhere near as tall or slim as these models. Using actual models to advertise food items is a way of misleading people as fashion models proportions don't represent average people's (generally a lot taller and slimmer).

Sorry OP but putting slim people on packaging is not body shaming. It might make you feel bad that your body doesn't look like that, but it's not body shaming just to use thin models, otherwise 90% of advertising would be body shaming. If it said "hey chubby, this is how your body needs to look" then yes. The far bigger problem is using women's bodies to sell a product.

And as a "stick insect" who is regularly told men "prefer something to hold onto" it might not be as pervasive the other way, and may be more societally acceptable to be thin but if you're complaining about body shaming it's not then ok to shame thinner people.

Honestly the whole thing just sounds a bit bitter and like you feel a bit low about your own body.
