To think my child is yellow?!

I noticed my toddler had a really yellow hue a few months ago, and thinking she ate a decent amount of veg, I put it down to beta carotene overdose, which I'd heard was quite common in toddlers. Few months later, she'd gone off lots of veg, but was still as yellow, so I sheepishly booked a doctors appointment, stressing to the receptionist that i didn't want to be a time waster etc. Dr looked at me like I was mad and had no explanation for it, said it wasn't really obvious and to watch out for her eyes going yellow as that WOULD be a sign of an illness. Anyway, please tell me if I'm crazy or if you think she looks yellow! Neither me or my husband are particularly olive, both fair skinned... baby is included as comparison Grin. Thank you!!

Oh by the way, my point is AIBU to think this is a problem or should I just relax. PFB if you hadn't guessed!

She has more yellow tones on her skin than the (gorgeous) baby I would say, but looks completely normal to me!

QuietNinjaTardis · 28/06/2017 18:35

Do you mean the arms/legs in the photos or the baby?

user1471548570 · 28/06/2017 18:35

I wouldn't say she's yellow. She is a cutie though Smile

Covfefe · 28/06/2017 18:36

In the first pic but not the second. I'm a bit yellow myself, I go golden when I tan. Could that be it?

QuietNinjaTardis · 28/06/2017 18:36

If you mean the arms/legs then definitely more yellow tinge than the baby but not abnormally so I wouldn't say.

AnyFucker · 28/06/2017 18:36

Slightly olive skin. Younger baby has pinker tones, that's all

BasketOfDeplorables · 28/06/2017 18:37

I have that sort of complexion. Neither of my parents, nor my siblings have it.

WowThatsDifferent · 28/06/2017 18:38

Sorry - yes, the random arms and legs in the photo... the baby is just for comparison as she looks average to me. They've both got chunky legs, don't let that throw you CakeGrin

She's more yellowy/olive than the baby but I've obly noticed because I'm looking for it. My son is a lot more yellow than my daughter. She has a very pale sort of Irish complexion whereas my son looks a bit Mediterranean.

alpacasandwich · 28/06/2017 18:39

I bet that amused the doctor! She has a yellow undertone to her skin but nothing to cause alarm. Your baby (who is beautiful, by the way) has a pink undertone.

goodnessidontknow · 28/06/2017 18:40

I think it's just that your toddler has a cool skin tone while the baby is more pink toned. I look quite sallow at times and the photos are similar to my skin so don't think it's anything to worry about.

Questioningeverything · 28/06/2017 18:40

Yeah I'd say olive tones but not yellow.

sloanewarrior · 28/06/2017 18:41

Based on the photos: the toddler has yellow undertones to her skin, the baby has blue undertones. I'm very pale but have yellow undertones, without being at all sallow. A lot of English people have blue undertones, so maybe it stands out to you for that reason? Or perhaps you're not English anyway, in which case ignore that theory Grin

MrsChopper · 28/06/2017 18:42

DS looks the same. I am very pale but DP has olive skin. I wouldn't be concerned tbh.

BertrandRussell · 28/06/2017 18:44

Is she tanning a bit for the first time? Running about in the sun more than she did last summer?

Scrumpernickel · 28/06/2017 18:44

Four lovely chubby legs. Her skin is certainly more yellow toned but it looks like her natural skin tone rather than jaundice or anything.

Passthecake30 · 28/06/2017 18:46

We all look like that in this house, when we get a tan we just get darker yellow... and never brown!

Borangeistheneworange · 28/06/2017 18:50

Looks normal to me. Slightly more yellow than the baby but it's not a concerning yellow. Having seen liver is screwed yellow (which i can only assume was your fear) it's very different to that.

memyselfandisolodjsjajaj · 28/06/2017 18:56

Looks normal to me too. She's GORGEOUS! ❤

logburnie · 28/06/2017 18:57

I have twins (non identical) and I took them both to the doctor when they were babies because one of them was more yellow than the other one. I think the dr was a tiny bit amused by me, but suffice to say yellow baby was (and is many years later!) fine Smile

memyselfandisolodjsjajaj · 28/06/2017 18:57

Oh, I am sorry, she's not yours. I bet yours is gorgeous too! 😀

So the, frankly, blimmin utterly blimmin gorgeous baby, does look pinker in the legs but not the face or hands. They look similar to the toddlers legs. So I'd say it's a natural skin tone for your heritage. My DDs and DSDs heritage ranges through Irish, Asian, Mediterranean and Anglo Saxon English! Across the board of the five of them there are skin tones ranging from pale and blotchy to proper dark olive but going through a couple of them that have a, frankly yellowy tone that tans at the merest hint of sun. If I looked back at baby pics of my youngest DDs, I'd defo say there's a hint of yellow that could have been a concern if only I'd ever considered it clearly as they're now teens it wasn't anything to worry about. We only know these 'tones' are probably nothing to worry about because we know our heritage going back a few generations. Do you think, with what you know about your heritage, these skin tones could be totally normal?
