To think my child is yellow?!

I noticed my toddler had a really yellow hue a few months ago, and thinking she ate a decent amount of veg, I put it down to beta carotene overdose, which I'd heard was quite common in toddlers. Few months later, she'd gone off lots of veg, but was still as yellow, so I sheepishly booked a doctors appointment, stressing to the receptionist that i didn't want to be a time waster etc. Dr looked at me like I was mad and had no explanation for it, said it wasn't really obvious and to watch out for her eyes going yellow as that WOULD be a sign of an illness. Anyway, please tell me if I'm crazy or if you think she looks yellow! Neither me or my husband are particularly olive, both fair skinned... baby is included as comparison Grin. Thank you!!

Her skin tone looks very similar to mine, I constantly think I'm jaundiced Wink quite possible your baby may go slightly more golden too as baby skin is very pink so I wouldn't panic!

NoWordForFluffy · 28/06/2017 19:01

The midwives thought that DD had a touch of jaundice when she was a newborn, until they clicked as to my slightly-olive skin tone!

The feet / legs look like they're a similar skin tone to us.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2017 19:04

She has warm skin tones and the baby has cool tones.

Both normal.

your baby is not yellow so quit with the attention seeking behaviour

Bloody hell. So many snarly people about.

Rollonbedtime7pm · 28/06/2017 19:10

If I put my 4 year old DD and baby DD in a similar pose, they would look exactly the same.

DD4 has very yellow toned skin that tans really easily whereas baby DD is much more pale and pink.

I only really notice when they are next to each other, big DD doesn't appear yellow all the time!

neveradullmoment99 · 28/06/2017 19:10

It can be down to jarred babyfood or anything with beta carotene can make a baby or toddler have an orange tinge. My dd was the same.

neveradullmoment99 · 28/06/2017 19:11

Its not a big deal btw!

GothyGeisha · 28/06/2017 19:12

I had the same thing with my daughter, she looked yellow-y, especially hands, feet, nose and tummy. Took her to Dr who got referral to consultant as I was worried about liver, to be told ' well you are quite yellow too, does she eat a lot of carrots?'

Felt terrible for wasting drs time but was reassured. She's a very healthy 22 year old now.

QueenOfRubovia · 28/06/2017 19:13

To make it a bit clearer. Are these two children siblings? Or is the baby a borrowed one just for comparison?

PoppyTree · 28/06/2017 19:13

Baby looks fine sweetie. If she seems healthy and happy, don't worry. If you are overly concerned, see the GP. Smile

QueenOfRubovia · 28/06/2017 19:15

Toddler's legs don't shout out yellow to me, fwiw.

NotTooWorried · 28/06/2017 19:17

Looks like normal skin tone to me.

Gunpowder · 28/06/2017 19:18

I've always been yellow too! I get a nice golden tan in the sun though.

WowThatsDifferent · 28/06/2017 19:18

Thank you so much everyone, mind put at rest and I feel very silly now! I'm a bit of a worrier but def not trying to waste Drs time or seek attention, so thanks to everyone who wrote kind and helpful comments! My toddler and baby are close in age (2under2) and look very similar so I guess I just assumed they should have the same skin tone which is daft really. Also thanks for the compliments about my littlest one, she's a very sweet natured baby. Right, off the find the next thing to worry about... xxxx

@QueenOfRubovia Siblings! Sorry, it was clear in my mind when writing, and utterly garbled once I'd read it back xxx

@neveradullmoment99 Very helpful article - thank you! I did initially think it was that, so that's very reassuring. Thanks for your time xxx

I'm yellow, my husband is pink. It's very obvious when we are next to each other.

My DN had quite a yellowish face and particularly her nose. It's normal, but just fine for you to worry about it.

Atenco · 28/06/2017 19:26

Looks like olive skin that hasn't had much sun on it yet to me.

Trumpton · 28/06/2017 19:26

Funnily enough I was playing " I spy with my little eye " with DGC 6 & 4 but we play with colours not initial letters . " I spy " said the 4 year old " something coloured peach "
" You ! " said the 6 year old " because I am yellow "
True fact , 4 year old is very peaches and cream and 6 year old is sallow ( but equally delicious )

Same parents different skin tones !

TreesAreLeafy · 28/06/2017 19:29

She is yellow but I'm yellow too That's just some peoples skin colour

Screwinthetuna · 28/06/2017 19:33

My kids are like that. I never really noticed until they were sat next to other people's young children who had a pinky glow and mine were glowing yellow Grin I have the same though, so no surprise!

BestZebbie · 28/06/2017 19:33

She has the same skin colour as me, I have blue eyes and no non-white relatives as far back as we are aware of. My mother is "English Rose" (fair with red cheeks) and my father is more sallow but not quite the same shade I am. It is part of the normal range of white British skin colours, afaict.

Caulkheadupnorf · 28/06/2017 19:36

My God daughter has quite olive undertone with dark hair. Her sister is blonde and much pinker. At the end of a hot summer holiday they do not look like sisters at all.

Choccywoccyhooha · 28/06/2017 19:37

She has the same skin colour as me and my oldest child, nothing to worry about.

Swatsup · 28/06/2017 19:39

My two kids are the same, one has a darker skin tone especially in summer. But like you it's always in the back of my paranoid mind that's it's something else :-) I know it isn't though lol
