To be annoyed for being judged as a MNetter?

I made a passing comment to a good friend recently about something I'd read on MN and she was horrified.

She couldn't believe that I was on MN and remarked that she would need to reevaluate all that she'd previously thought about me.

I tried to point out that perhaps she was confusing Mumsnet with Netmums...but I think the distinction may have been lost on her.

Do I try to show her that MN is not the vacuous forum she thinks it is or just let her revise he opinion of me (for the lessor!)

If you think she's serious (do you? Sounds like a bit of banter to me) then maybe her judging you on something she knows nothing about (as you asked about whether you should show her or not) should make you think twice about her too??

Would she really treat you differently or back off from you for such a small think?

It would be a very boring world if we were all the same. Accepting our differences is what makes life and friendships work. To assume that everyone who participates in a particular forum are spawn of the devil is shallow and juvenile. Reassess her opinion indeed. Maybe you should reassess her bigotry!

'for such a small think' I meant thing obvs, although with some of the posters on here I was maybe right first time round.

I always find this funny. I've been on MN for years and only very recently had a child, so people don't expect it. A lot of friends having first babies have referred negatively to MN 'vipers' and when we were expecting they warned us away from the site.

I especially loved the woman who told me in hushed tones that Mumsnet was full of horrible women with no sense of feminism, who just cared about their husbands' jobs.

I recommend MN to a lot of people and my NCT group know I post here, though they've all been far too polite and lovely to say anything negative (yet!).

Being actually 'horrified' and needing to re-evaluate all that she'd previously thought of you, definitely points towards her being a fully fledged Mumsnetter.

She'll be popping a note through your door soon, telling you that you're toxic and announcing she's be going NC.

So she's known you well enough to be classed as a good friend, but she's no longer sure about you because you use a popular internet forum aimed at, but not exclusively for mums.

It's hardly the Klu Klux Klan.

Some of the school mums were talking about MN the other day and roundly criticising the "sort of people" who come here. However for women who profess to hate the site so much, they sure knew a lot about most of the threads on here. ..

Whenever I mention Mumsnet in real life people snigger and judge. It's not cool at all to be on Mumsnet.

People seem to have very confused opinions about MN. It's full of rabid feminists, it's full of yummy mummies, it's full of bitches, vipers, misandrists, it's full of vapid thickos who are obsessed with celebrity and shopping.

Actually, it's just full of women and some men, talking about random stuff. Much like any other forum.

I find it hilarious how threatening some people perceive it to be.

I can see where shes coming from, there are a few dangers of using this forum. However if you navigate carefully you will be fine.

I've never told a soul I use this site and never would.

I must admit to having preconceptions about mn. Mostly because a local group of mumsnetters used to meet up at my work once a week and they were vile - real mean girls vibe, really nasty to newcomers, and with vile, badly behaved brats in tow. The children were so badly behaved that we had to say if they didn't keep an eye on them they would have to leave (I work in a library).

This coloured my view of mumsnet for a long time. Obviously now I've been sucked into it myself...

Some Fb friends of mine occasionally link to the rather more risqué threads and giggle like particularly vacuous and flighty teenagers while feigning horror about the kind of woman who posts on MN.

I judge. I really do.

Mumsnet is nothing like I expected it to be when I first wandered in. There are loads of intelligent, witty people posting on every topic under the sun. I think its funny when people judge as they probably have the wrong idea and even if they were right, I wonder what amazing things they do in their free time.
