AIBU unreasonable to think I could take 2 x 70yos to Glasto / a festival?!

it's my dad's 70th in a few weeks and i'm struggling for a brilliant present idea

i suddenly thought this morning, we could take them to glasto next year. it would be eye popping for them, but they're awesome so i know we'd have a blast

my issue is that to do it in the luxury that would be ESSENTIAL (trust me) for them to relax and enjoy it is no doubt beyond our financial means

i'd be interested to know whether others have done it "posh" and what that costs

but also, are there any other festivals that might be better / smaller / easier to do in a naice way that will be more affordable and manageable, iyswim?

i'm quite taken with the overall idea, just need some help from people with more experience!

There is no glasto next year

Have you thought about a tribute festival? There's one local to me (midlands) called glastonbudget. They do a VIP camping and it's very family friendly (And not too pricey!)

There is a lot of walking at Glastonbury in potentially swampy conditions (and as PP said, no glasto next year anyway)
I would recommend Latitude as its more family friendly (a bit less rowdy and less people on hard drugs) and on a much smaller site and less risk of difficult conditions.
It's also cheaper and still has lots of arty things to do like comedians etc and they have pink sheep :)

Its also in a few weeks and not sold out yet AFAIK

How about Wychwood? As its on Cheltenham racecourse its dry underfoot, and very easy to stay in a nearby hotel instead of camping

Maybe somewhere like Port Elliott in Cornwall.
My 74 year old Mum went last year, with other members of our family, and had a good time. There is a combination of events, literary, art and still lots of music.
Glastonbury is huge, it can be a bit overwhelming, and it takes ages to get to different places.

Depends where in the country you want to be too.

Would recommend Latitude if you fancied festivaling, or Isle of Wight - both very cool but not quite as huge as Glastonbury so less walking (which I think would be the main issue).

You'd need to take camping chairs around with you all day as generally there's no where to sit except on the ground.

Personally I'd get in early and rent a cottage nearby and go off site to sleep - I know 70 isn't old if you're in good health but even the luxury tents are a bit rustic!

I also agree with CMOTDibbler that Wychwood is good, a varied programme, and lots of seats in shady tents.
All the atmosphere of a festival, without the massive distances to walk.

There are all sorts of festivals around during the summer. Malton in Yorkshire has a food festival, there are lots of smaller folk festivals, festival of racing at various racecourses. It's a great idea. Google summer festivals and you can find one to suit your budget.

Festival No 6 at Portmeirion. You could stay in luxury (ish) so no camping required and experience the whole festival vibe. It's on in September.

Latitude is great, but like most festivals the luxury camping options are really expensive - even at smaller festivals it's often an extra couple of hundred quid per person if you're wanting into more than a pre-pitched tent.

It's fallow next year. It depends what you're looking for. There's truly nothing like Glastonbury, but you'd have a good experience at somewhere like Camp Bestival or Green Man.

In terms of costs, doing to totally VIP - tickets and camping - would probably cost you the best part of £3k each. I think VIP tickets are £1kish for Glastonbury, and camping would be at least that again,

try festival number 6 in port merrion.

Brilliant in that it is not all field. Lots of stuff in the village which is for festival use only.

You could also hire a. Camper van for proper beds etc.

My husband is desperate for us to go to Glastonbury and although I would love parts of it I could not stand the noise, dirt and chaos for more than 24 hours. I'm thinking that maybe we should go to the Hay Book Festival instead

Port Eliot is great fun for all ages, proper festival vibe but much smaller than Glastonbury..

durhamdurham i felt exactly the same, but we managed to get tickets for free in return for "working" 3 hours each day for the charity my DH worked for at the time.
This meant we were sort of "staff" and got backstage camping, which was quiet and orderly, and there were showers and proper loos. heaven.
so no expense or anything, but very civilised.
i confess i don't think i could have handled it either, in normal camping!

What about Cropedy or Wilderness?

Green Man in the Brecon Beacons is a lovely festival and it's costing us only another £35 each to have a pre-pitched tent. There are more expensive "glamping" options too. It's a compact festival coupled with a Welsh beer and cider festival. Very family friendly with a huge age range. I am 6, not a young gazelle any more and I love it.

Translation: I'm the one who really wants to go to a festival, my parents have never said they'd love to be there. So I'm dressing it up as a present, but it's all about ME.

A few years ago there was a guy in his 70s next to us at Isle of Wight festival, he'd been to the original one back in 1970 . He was still next to us, when Jay Z came on right to headline Saturday night, loving every minute.

But if your parents didn't do the festival thing in the 60s and 70s it might not have quite the same draw for them.
