I've just seen posts on FB and on the news with boys wanting the luxury of skirts in the warm.... seriously.... for a few days in the year they think women/girls attire is more comfortable and make a 'thing' of it ... maybe they should try it in the middle of winter when those skirts don't do much against the cold but girls (school uniform) can't wear trousers.. . Or what about other items of female work uniform.. .. don't see them trying to deal with uncomfortable shoes or tights or any other type if constrictive clothing....
The ones o the news had their skirts too short to be acceptable in many schools and, both boys and girls would probably be more comfortable in shorts....
Hmmmm

Actually they wanted to wear shorts but weren't allowed, so this was their protest.

And I heard one boy interviewed who was pointing out how unfair it was that the girls freeze in winter.

Those boys were wearing skirts because they weren't allowed to wear shorts and it was too hot for long pants
Not because they just fancied the luxury of wearing a skirt
The schools uniform policy was extremely sexist and these boys took a stand, good for them I say

The story I saw was about boys who wore skirts in protest at not being allowed to wear shorts as they weren't part of uniform. Not quite the same thing!

Wow. What a way to twist a story.

You should be a journo, OP Grin

FlossyMooToo · 23/06/2017 09:06

Did you read the article OP?

As otgers have said it was in protest at not being allowed to wear shorts in hot weather.

Report

Sirzy · 23/06/2017 09:08

And the award for completely misunderstanding a news story goes too the OP.

I loved this story. It really surprised me how totally ordinary the skirts looked on the boys. I think boys and girls should have the option of the full array of skirts, trousers, shorts etc. There should not be boys and girls uniforms.

BlackAppleCore · 23/06/2017 09:08

I totally support them and I think it's great that they're making a stand.

Boys and girls should have the choice of trousers, shorts/skirts all year round. Nothing more annoying than teachers telling kids they have to wear x, y and z despite the weather yet they turn up in short sleeve shirts and weather appropriate attire.

PantPlot · 23/06/2017 09:12

both boys and girls would probably be more comfortable in shorts...

Well, yeah. How on earth did you manage to completely miss the whole point of the story?!

Oh for gods sake - they're a bunch of young children who actually got off their arses about something and did something about it.

Young children. Give them a bloody break. They're trying. They're kids.

Christ on a bloody bike!!!

I wish the media had made a bit more of the fact one boy was told his legs were too hairy, and looked unsightly.

Good on him for shaving them so he could continue to wear his skirt, but what a disgusting attitude from the school, over his body hair.

Imagine them telling a female pupil/member of staff, that their legs were too hairy to wear a skirt?

whifflesqueak · 23/06/2017 09:15

I hadn't heard that part, Worra. That's disgraceful.

What a bizarre interpretation of the story.

maybe they should try it in the middle of winter when those skirts don't do much against the cold

Or maybe the school should just change it's uniform policy to allow everyone to be comfortable, something these boys have probably made more likely by putting the school in the spotlight in national media.

don't see them trying to deal with uncomfortable shoes or tights or any other type if constrictive clothing....

Why the fuck would anyone go out of their way to be less comfortable? And why would you adopt this snarky stance toward them for not doing so? All they've done is looked for an alternative to wearing trousers during a heat wave and when they were refused one, they found a way to embarrass the school and push them to review standards of dress which adversely affect pupils of both genders. Good for them.

I think it's time for a hairy leg protest from both girls and boys.....

Report

WorraLiberty · 23/06/2017 09:19

Grin @ hairy leg protest!

And actually you do see boys trying to deal with uncomfortable school shoes.

Especially if they're used to wearing trainers outside of school.

I thought those boys were brilliant, fair play to them.

And OP, try reading the story first.

Report

rainbowunicorn · 23/06/2017 09:20

OP you obviously only heard the bits you wanted to hear as the actual story was that they wanted to wear shorts and were not allowed so in order to comply with school rules took a stand and wore skirts. They were actually also standing up for the rights of girls to wear trousers and shorts if they wished. The girls in the school were also supporting the protest.
It s quite concerning that you managed to totally twist a story around to your own views, perhaps you have some difficulty with listening and understanding / comprehension.

Bit worra, schools don't have to tell girls that their legs are too hairy; we are so brainwashed that we tell ourselves.

Report

WorraLiberty · 23/06/2017 09:26

That's completely beside the point here choccy

And not all schoolgirls shave their legs.

Some inside information ( of sorts)

This school is competing in a sort of competition with the other state schools in the city of " my uniform is more distinctive than yours " This has been going on the last couple of years .

If my kids were still at school I would be livid. It seems they are trying to compete with the many private schools around here. It means that no parent can buy shirts , jumpers etc from Tesco, Asda or M and S but instead have to buy stuff at exhorbitant prices from the uniform shop.

And the shirts are nasty poly cotton and not soft. Girls have to wear skirts all the time regardless of weather.

Good for them and if it raises questions locally on the idiocy of it all I will be very pleased.

Seriously? Did you even read the story or just see boys in skirts on FB and think you could use it in some sort of anti-male post here?? I suggest you read the bit about boys not being allowed to wear shorts....and if you have read it and still twisted it your mind must be a really strange place....hmmm

Good on the boys for speaking up.

Shame you managed to misread the story completely - read it again.

Report

zeezeek · 23/06/2017 09:37

It was a brilliant peaceful protest by the boys and I applaud them. I also vaguely know that school and it has a reputation of being completely ridiculous about uniform regulations.

It is not fair on them or the girls to make this into something that it is not.
