I've just seen posts on FB and on the news with boys wanting the luxury of skirts in the warm.... seriously.... for a few days in the year they think women/girls attire is more comfortable and make a 'thing' of it ... maybe they should try it in the middle of winter when those skirts don't do much against the cold but girls (school uniform) can't wear trousers.. . Or what about other items of female work uniform.. .. don't see them trying to deal with uncomfortable shoes or tights or any other type if constrictive clothing....
The ones o the news had their skirts too short to be acceptable in many schools and, both boys and girls would probably be more comfortable in shorts....
Hmmmm

Well... I obviously missed a bit... and the subtitles weren't quite what was obviously being expressed... so for that misunderstanding on my part I am sorry... re the TV news story.....

Well done for coming back, OP

It's getting pretty fashionable on Mumsnet not to.

Not that I'm calling you unfashionable Shock Grin

"I suspect you thought everyone would jump on this and start trans bashing OP... Well it backfired as these boy were actually standing up for the right of all pupils to wear shorts."

Why?
Because, in my misunderstanding of the article, amid trying to sort kids etc out for school, I mistakenly thought that some boys (in the article) and other comments by people on FB (not mentioned in particular) thought that skirts were nice and cool in the heat and wanted to get in on the action?
I didn;'t mention Trans and it actually never even came into my mind... not everything is about Trans people.

"But OP, I think you also have a point. Perhaps boys are more likely than girls to revolt when things don't work in their favour (or perhaps the response to it is generally better)? I don't know how many girls even think to do something about when their uniforms are less comfortable/colder in winter. May we should encourage them to."

Very much 'yes' to this.
Yes... very much so

I am quite happy to agree that I'm wrong, if I'm wrong...
Didn't get a chance to come back sooner.

All schools with uniforms should allow girls and boys to wear skirts, shorts or trousers as they see fit. There's no reason boys shouldn't be able to wear skirts to school regularly but I accept this isn't an immediate solution given cultural expectations and gendered attire.

I concur there are far more issues for girls and women - schools insisting girls wear skirts and not allowing trousers, workplaces still in certain circumstances being able to force women to wear make up and high heeled footwear which the government refused to tighten legislation on despite Nicola Thorp's recent campaign etc, but in this instance it was teenage boys protesting against a ridiculous uniform rule and I think they were quite correct.

NoLoveofMine · 23/06/2017 11:11

Socksey I think you made some valid points but in the wrong context/with the wrong targets if that makes sense.

Socksey · 23/06/2017 11:14

Thanks... and in this case... as this is obviously what was on the news... I would applaud them and hope that my son would take a similar stance

It just goes to show what can happen by not getting the full story (hanging head in shame)

Of the girls have coked legs in winter then they can have their own protest by wearing the boys trousers. They don't need the boys to fight their battles but actually getting shorts in the uniform would benefit both groups.

If you have an issue with having to wear tights and uncomfortable shoes at work can I suggest taking a leaf out the boys book and taking a stance? And buy better shoes

NoLoveofMine · 23/06/2017 11:19

MommaGee it's not comparable. The boys wore skirts to protest because skirts are part of the uniform so they couldn't be sent home or reprimanded. In a school which doesn't allow girls to wear trousers there's no equivalent protest.

NoLoveofMine · 23/06/2017 11:21

Also Nicola Thorp took a stance on being forced to wear high heels at work, was (and still is) abused for it online, got the required number of signatures for her petition to be debated in Parliament yet the government still refused to tighten legislation on the matter.

@Socksey I think you're fab for coming back Smile! As a regular user of subtitles, I know how easy it is to go a bit 'lost in translation', especially as news subs are done in real time...and the problem is further compounded if you're just casting half a glance while your attention is occupied elsewhere! Your pleasant, explanatory counter-responses bloody well do you credit in the sometimes cut-throat world of online forum commentary !!

MommaGee · 23/06/2017 11:42

Well the girls wear trousers because they are in the school uniform. Skirts aren't under unisex, it was a sarcy comment made by a flippant head teacher. So if trousers are boys only then the girls eating them IS the same as the boys wearing a skirt from the girls list

GeminiRising · 23/06/2017 11:50

How is it not comparable? Trousers are only on the uniform list for boys. Skirts are only on the uniform list for girls. So if boys can wear skirts because they are on the uniform list then it stands to reason that girls can do the same with trousers. I hope they do!

No, because you posted on AIBU without actually know what you were talking about hoping to cause anti-men outcry and gender debate.

K425 · 23/06/2017 12:23

FitBot I'll remember to tell my male colleagues that they have to stop wearing shorts. Unless it's graduation, in which case, trousers it is.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 23/06/2017 13:09

Where I live girls have to wear skirts all year round (and it's a cold and wet country) and are not allowed to wear trousers. I'm dreading this as I have two girls and feel I may be arguing a lot in the future.

I have apologized for my error.
The only person trying to make is about an issue it's not, and never was intended to, is you.
I was expressing frustration and not trying to incite anything anti-men... I would like to think that most of my posts are relatively sensible, but we all can have our bad moments.
