For a Long Island wedding or even an evening wedding in the UK, it's lovely. Really don't see the problem - or why the OP is so bothered by what a random reviewer on John Lewis wore to a wedding? Confused

It's gorgeous. Would definitely not look out of place at an Indian wedding reception.

I agree with Waffles80. why do you even care what someone you've never met wears to a wedding that you'll never attend? Confused

Or a middle eastern/Pakistani/Nigerian one for that matter. Check your prejudices at the door OP

I think it's a gorgeous dress & I'm not Shirley Bassey...
Think it would depend on the wedding.

Green eyed monster eh OP?

This dress is gorgeous and I bet the lady looks great in it.

Jealous much hmmmm?

Eh? It's lovely, a glam MOB (including mine) could definitely pull it off.

I thought it was going to be right up the arse and down the cleavage or something!

Lovely dress, exactly the kind of thing that close family wear to American weddings. Doubt anyone is going to mistake the mother of the bride for a bridesmaid, unless they also happen to be wearing silver sequinned dresses, which presumably she would have known in advance!

@GettingThereSlowly01 - my friends MIL was dressed head to toe in black at my friend's wedding. Wide brimmed black hat, black (albeit nice sequinned) dress - the lot. She also kept her sunglasses on in the wedding photosConfused

My friend decided to photo-shop her out of several pictures.

It's not too bad if you are Shirley Bassey

I cant see the problme tbh.
Its not white and certainly not like a wedding dress at all. More like a cocktail dress which would be ok to wear at a wedding.
I wouldnt have the right shape to wear it but then I also can thnk abut quite a few women (well) over 50yo who could wear that wo any issue at all.

Lots of guests wore similar dresses (with long sleeved jackets/stoles etc during the ceremony) for my friend's wedding (black tie) in a London synagogue followed by reception at a very smart hotel. Everyone looked amazing.

Hmmmph. I'm struggling to see why you would feel strongly enough about this to post. Is it someone you know who wore this perhaps?

It is a beautiful dress. I've seen several MOB's and MOG's wearing rather similar and they looked amazing. Nobody managed to confuse them with the bride, luckily (since most people actually knew the people in the ceremony) and all went well. I've worn a long pale gold gown as a wedding guest, and managed to avoid being given a ring or asked to make vows.

You'd need to have a very different figure than I do to carry it off, but it is very lovely.

Are you jealous @LardLizard?

You sound it. Your remarks about this woman are very spiteful.

the John Lewis dress is stunning.. I'd be very proud of my MIL had the figure and confidence to carry it off...

what's the OP's actually issue ? is she jealous ? I'm confused.. even the review was lovely.... so I agree with others.. i don't get it ?

Google Long Island weddings - images and it becomes clear that the dress would be fine. Pretty much impossible to over dress by the looks of it. Especially if the outfit was for the evening part.

I think it's gorgeous.

You're easily shocked, OP.

I prefer the winey dress linked to in the page though.

I'm baffled. I don't particularly like the dress and I wouldn't wear it. What exactly do you think is wrong with it? It's not as 'showy' as you claim it to be and wouldn't outshine a wedding dress. You sound quite spiteful towards someone you don't know and who left a nice review of something. Seriously confused.
