Arrived on business to city and decided to drop my bag before heading to conference . Booked hotel last minute . Wasn't cheap . Man meets me in street and takes bag showing me entrance to " hotel" next to door to betting shop . Ok a bit weird but I was in a hurry .i return later and let myself in with code and find my room is up 2 flights of a spiral staircase which I find hard to navigate ( won't go in to detail ) . So I ask weird guy who appears with bag if he had another room . He does - it's fine and I say I'll move to that one . Then he says he would prefer if I left . I'm now feeling a bit freaked out and think best to get the out of the place and away from weird guy . I ask him to reimburse me before I leave . He agrees then comes back and says his boss says no . I'm cross now and mention trip advisor - he then says he will pay me himself and gets me to accompany him to thencash point . He gets me the money and off he goes . Now in ianother hotel - but what the fuck was that all about - was it a brothel , should I get in tripadvisor anyway ???

This is a fabulous thread. I'm so glad it's actually possibly going somewhere too...

DogsandCats123 · 22/06/2017 23:30

Interesting

TooSleepyToCare · 22/06/2017 23:48

Wonder if the owner is just as baffled. Crazy thread

When in Paris with 2 female flat mates, all impecunious, many years ago, we arrived at the Gare du Nord and found an inexpensive quaint looking hotel nearby. It had a lot of narrow stairs and footstep lavatories on landings. Our room contained one spacious double bed which we shared, artistic lamps in the form of naked women - and a mirrored ceiling! We hoped that it was not one way glass. Now that could have been a brothel but there seemed no undue comings and goings.
I never realised Oxford had so many expensive hotels! College rooms start at £35 a night and are clean and comfortable. We had generous breakfasts included and tiny ensuites, all perfectly adequate.

Grin off to google

Icallbullshit3 · 23/06/2017 01:06

Yes I thought so... I have stayed in MJB in Barrow upon Humber. Except I think we got lucky. The cottage wasn't too bad except that it hadn't been swept for a while... and my daughter found a dummy that wasn't hers and came back home with hand foot and mouth... a good 2.5 years ago tho!

I walked out of a hotel in Amsterdam because they wanted to take my passport instead of a deposit and the wallpaper was black. On the ceiling was well it was just one big mirror.
It was also a gay knocking shop so was full of men

rightwhine · 23/06/2017 08:33

I've refused a skanky, filthy room in my student backpacking days - but I don't think it was a brothel.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 23/06/2017 09:32

@ChickyChickyChoccy - before I ended up in the themed hotel with the kinky nun's cell bedroom in Amsterdam (mentioned upthread), I walked out of a very similar place to the one you're describing - two guys on the desk who gave me the creeps, wanted my passport, said the only rooms they had were "shared"... I walked straight out again. No wonder the kinky nun's cell with functioning lock on the door seemed like a good choice!

sportinguista · 23/06/2017 09:42

Amused by the one in Norwich. I grew up in Norfolk but haven't been back much for the last 25 years. My dad was a copper though and he used to tell us of strange goings on there. There used to be one woman in the village if her tea towels were out on the line she was open for business.

Do have a brothel across the road now though, second time it's happened. we had a cannabis farm too and one of my neighbours is an ex-call girl. Yes it's truly exciting neighbourhood. Yes, are planning to leave the country!

I accidentally stayed at a Brothel in the Lebanon in 1999. It was lovely and picturesque with cabins by the sea. We thought we were the only guests until the cabin next door was occupied by a loud Russian prostitute, and then her ever changing clients. We left the next morning. I guess there weren't enough tourists or maybe the prostitutes pay better....

CrazyolMama · 23/06/2017 10:28

There is clearly something elicit going on here.....Most bizarre!!! I'd have turned on my heel & ran for the hills! Bugger the money! Think you were really brave! We're all desperate to know the name of this "hotel"? Do tell???

Prideinmyplace2 · 23/06/2017 10:48

In my younger single days I lived under a crack dealer who often played Garage music at 2am in the morning! I politely asked many times for them to turn it down, but to no avail. The police said it was a matter for the council noise pollution team.
I only mention it as street crack whores turned up frequently at the communal door. They were only interested in one thing...& it wasn't clients!

I'm looking forward to further updates...

IloveBanff · 23/06/2017 11:06

CrazyolMama Again, read the thread. It's the Museum Hotel in Oxford and I doubt there is any thing illicit about it. A poster knows the owner and is going to ask him this situation.

IloveBanff · 23/06/2017 11:07

Sorry, that should be "ask him about this situation".

sportinguista · 23/06/2017 11:09

Thinking about it there is apparently a premises in Stapleford above a shop which is a 'massage parlour'. I think this kind of thing is rather more common.

The hotel doesn't sound bad. Could they have double booked the OP and were having an 'oh shit' kind of moment?

PsychedelicSheep · 23/06/2017 11:11

MostlyBowlingHedgehog - what's the name of the Amsterdam hotel please? It sounds awesome!

AcaciaYou · 23/06/2017 11:21

Was it the Black Tulip hotel in Amsterdam?

Ev1lEdna · 23/06/2017 12:22

I stayed in a very weird hotel in central Amsterdam once (yes, that bit of central Amsterdam) where all the rooms were "themed". Mine was kinky religious cell themed! What little I glimpsed through other doors suggested all the rooms were individually themed and just as strange. I don't think it was actually a brothel (though it was next door to one), but it was very odd. Clean and cheap, though, so not a total disaster, so long as one ignored the decor.

I'm pretty sure I've stayed in this hotel (but sorry can't recall the name it was years ago)

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 23/06/2017 12:35

The hotel looks beautiful, I'm gagging to know the other side of the story

squiz81 · 23/06/2017 12:43

I just looked at the MJB in Norwich on booking .com it's telling me it's in high demand and has been booked 10 times today! Is there a MN field trip happening?

BubblesInTheTub · 23/06/2017 12:43

I once accidentally stayed in a homeless hostel for women coming out of prison. There were some terrifying characters but I got chatting to two of the women in the TV room and they were completely lovely with such heart-breaking but hopeful stories. I think of them often and hope they're okay.

BitchQueen90 · 23/06/2017 12:49

sporting you are right on that one. I live near Stapleford. Worst kept secret ever Grin
