To want to move down south?

BlackAppleCore · 20/06/2017 20:50

Staying in Wiltshire for a few days. I'm from Hull, East Yorkshire.

I never thought I'd hear myself say it as a proud northerner but god I really don't want to go back to Hull. It's so depressing. A million miles away from anything decent, shitty weather, dark and dingy streets, shit schools, no prospects, council estates everywhere -

Down here seems to be a totally different way of live. An hour from London meaning we're never too far away from the big events, beautiful scenery, polite kids, beautiful houses, so much in the area to see and do, fantastic weather ...

AIBU to seriously consider leaving the North for the first time in my life? Is the grass greener down here or will it just taste fresher for a short while?

That's funny, I'm from SE originally, lived in SW for a decade or so and now on NW. I was just thinking today how much nicer people are in the north, just so friendly and chatty. Also house prices are much cheaper here!

Marylou2 · 20/06/2017 21:03

I always find it interesting how people stereotype the North and the South as though there's some imaginary line where received pronunciation ends and cloth caps and Whippets begin. I understand why you might not want to live in Hull OP but would you rather live in Tower Hamlets or a lovely part of Cheshire? I've lived both North and South and choosing the area carefully is the key.

Iamastonished · 20/06/2017 21:04

My sister lives in Wiltshire. It's a lovely part of the world.

ForalltheSaints · 20/06/2017 21:05

I lived in the north east for 4 years and was glad to move down south. Longer days in the winter especially.

sobeyondthehills · 20/06/2017 21:06

I live in the south, I want to move North.

I often think the grass is always greener, however for us its impossible for at least another 8-10 years

Tazerface · 20/06/2017 21:07

I live in Liverpool. I'm getting seriously obsessed with moving to London.

This is in no way possible but I'm enjoying viewing my perfect properties on RightMove! I've got my eye on this one. I am from the home counties so have family in the area, I just lust after being able to walk out my door and have everything there.

Crispsheets · 20/06/2017 21:09

I've been in London for over 35 years.
I'm moving north.

lastqueenofscotland · 20/06/2017 21:09

It's not a north south thing but an area thing. There are lovely bits of the country near yourself - Beverley for example...
There are shit bits of the south.

If you hate hull have you considered a more manageable move, perhaps to north Lincs? Barton, barrow, goxhill, barnetby etc?

leccybill · 20/06/2017 21:14

I'm from oop north and find it quite grim.
I'm no fan of London, Essex etc but I love the south-west, particularly Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Somerset. Could happily move down there.

Puffpaw · 20/06/2017 21:18

I have lived in the north, and the south, I prefer the south mainly because I like the heat.

nina2b · 20/06/2017 21:21

The humidity is excellent.

Iseesheep · 20/06/2017 21:23

I left Yorkshire at 25 and 20 years later wouldn't even begin to consider moving back. I hate even visiting the place. I'm staying in Wiltshire!

There is a world of difference between the two parts of the country and south suits me much, much more than the north. Better weather for a start and I much prefer the Wilts/Somerset scenery. Far less bleak than the Pennines or North York Moors.

abbey44 · 20/06/2017 21:30

I've lived all my adult life in the south and south-east (Oxfordshire and rural Kent) and loved it, never planned to move but my mum died unexpectedly 11 years ago, and I moved back to the north-east to look after my dad (sister was 'too busy' and 'had a life' she said). He died three years ago and I'd love to move back south, but can't sell my house and the price gap is widening all the time. I don't think I'll ever be able to afford to move now, unfortunately.

NotACleverName · 20/06/2017 21:32

Gosh, not council estates. The very horror of it.

There's plenty of decent places up north, but knock yourself out I guess.

LittleBooInABox · 20/06/2017 21:36

My Other half is from hull and he moved. Said he'd never go back.

I'd quite like to go up north. Cheaper living.

IWantACheeseburger · 20/06/2017 21:40

Ooo I've just found out we are moving to Wiltshire with DHs work. Glad to hear it is lovely,I've never been!

scorchioinJune · 20/06/2017 21:45

Wiltshire is lovely. Bits of the SE are very busy and obviously it's all expensive...
The buildings are prettier though I agree. Those from grey/ black/ rust coloured slabs of houses scare me. Bit of flint or Tudor cottages for me.
And it is much brighter, less cloud?

SueGeneris · 20/06/2017 21:50

I like all the love for Wiltshire!

Actually it is really lovely. Lots of small towns, within 30-60 minutes of several cities. You've got Bath and Bristol nearby. The countryside is pretty, schools are good, not so expensive as further easy towards London but you can easily get to London if you want to. Wales about an hour away; Cornwall 3 hours to the very bottom.

And we're friendly on the whole!

PickAChew · 20/06/2017 21:56

Everywhere has council estates, unless it's some exclusive little development.

I moved North from Hull to the NE for uni and never went back. There are things I will always love about Hull, but there's nothing there for me (apart from my family, of course, but it's easy enough to visit and then leave again!) and not even any suitable special schools for the boys (that said, one of mine is placed out of county, anyhow, but he has a particular set of circumstances that mean it was always going to be hard to find a suitable placement for him)

I must admit that the fact that it never gets fully light in December can sometimes be tiring and we get some proper, prolonged winter here, some years, but then it's been a lovely fresh 18C here, today, while down south has been sweltering and the cobalt blue sky at gone midnight, last night, was so pretty.

Fl0ellafunbags · 20/06/2017 21:56

Hull isn't exactly representative of the whole of Yorkshire, let alone the north of England.

AddToBasket · 20/06/2017 22:00

Try to wash your hair. And your body.

Every time I think I want to move back down South I remember how much nicer the water is up North - you can get clean. Grin

But Wiltshire is lovely. I was there two weeks ago and had the same thoughts.

chanel19 · 20/06/2017 22:03

I live about a mile from Wiltshire.
Yes, very beautiful.
However, l work with the public- we've had quite a few northern customers recently.
Way friendlier, chattier seemingly happier than the regulars!
All just visiting/working.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 20/06/2017 22:03

I grew up down South but my dad is from the North as is DP. So have spent a lot of time up there.

I think the North is much friendlier and people look out for each other but would never want to live there as it's too bloody cold!

ChildishGambino · 20/06/2017 22:04

Nina2b -why, yes it is!

Sandsnake · 20/06/2017 22:06

Come and join us, OP!

Although on my commuter train going home today there were two northerners who were TALKING TO EACH OTHER. You'll need to wind that kind of behaviour in if you're coming down here (well to the South East at least...) Wink
