To want to move down south?

Staying in Wiltshire for a few days. I'm from Hull, East Yorkshire.

I never thought I'd hear myself say it as a proud northerner but god I really don't want to go back to Hull. It's so depressing. A million miles away from anything decent, shitty weather, dark and dingy streets, shit schools, no prospects, council estates everywhere -

Down here seems to be a totally different way of live. An hour from London meaning we're never too far away from the big events, beautiful scenery, polite kids, beautiful houses, so much in the area to see and do, fantastic weather ...

AIBU to seriously consider leaving the North for the first time in my life? Is the grass greener down here or will it just taste fresher for a short while?

I lived in Hull for eight years. I love Yorkshire. I wouldn't ever move back to Hull. I've got firm roots in the south and currently live in Essex but would love to live in Hampshire but I love the north and took the kids up last year.

Yay! . I feel like I didn't know what proper outdoors was like until I moved here. The sheer space, the sky, the water, the rock, the forests. It's... elemental. Blush Sorry, I just really like it here.

caffeine I'm in the south lakes, on the coast.

I feel the same eolian I just love being outside in this area! Infact, I work outside in this area and love it!

Soft water is horrible. Tasteless. And you can't rinse anything with it.

YANBU. The south is lovely especially by the seaside

Bumpsadaisie · 21/06/2017 23:22

Ooh, loads of Cumbrians! How lovely !

Hull is a fab place to be at the moment. I'm an east hull girl and there's not a friendlier bunch of people. The beautiful east coast is 40 mins away, Leeds an hour away. Cheap house prices. Great bars and restaurants. Beverley close by if you fancy a more sedate upmarket feel.

I live in the south and love being by the sea. If I had the chance I'd move back north tomorrow though. I miss proper hills & generally friendly people... And to be honest the weather is a bit rubbish everywhere in the UK so it's only a slight variation

For the longest time I wanted to move down south. I was born and raised in Scotland and would visit Surrey every year, which always struck me as warmer, prettier and with quaint villages and SO lush and green.
I admit I was a bit of a misguided snob about it all.
After traveling quite extensively around the U.K. the once perfect gloss of the south has diminished as I have realised, as many other posters have that it's not as simple as a north south divide.
You get good and bad parts everywhere.

I remember visiting Shepton Mallet ( mulberry factory outlet Wink) and wanting to run as fast as possible from Somerset as it just wasn't the perfect idyll I thought it was going to be.

Similarly places up north have very pleasantly surprised me, like York and Harrogate.

I now live in the glorious Peak District in a delightful village yet only 15 mins from Sheffield. I enjoy best of both worlds with my semi rural location and I wouldn't swap it for anything.
Now when I visit Surrey I can't help compare that my slice of paradise up north is prettier, more lush and green and just as quaint ( if not quite as warm) and can't wait to get home.
The South also feels really busy and congested and appreciate the feeling of "space" up here.

Chatsworth is just down the road from me and when the recent RHS flower show was 10x more enjoyable than the visit I made to the Chelsea one. I used to think stuff was always happening down south and I was missing out.

Wrong! .... I get plenty cultural fixes in Sheffield and Manchester.

I spent a lot of time wasting thinking the grass was greener elsewhere only to appreciate what I had was fab.

TrueBlueYorkshire
You are clearly very local to me if you're talking about rhubarb and Ponty cakes Smile

I don't think this is about north vs south as much as "Hull vs other places."

Hull is a very deprived part of the world according to any indicator.

The north has lots of wonderful cities and towns which are not remotely like Hull.

Nothing wrong with living down south if you prefer it, though.
