1 for breakfast and 1 for dinner in the evening?

I think this thread shows how neurotic people are becoming about food. There is a big difference between eating junk food all the time and just occasionally.

The situation is not ideal but after reading what Potoroo wrote I can understand the context of why it is happening.

McD don't only sell burgers btw, they also sell salads but I'll tell you something, most, if not all of the kids will go for the burgers.

I wonder how many of the parents who ban their kids from eating McD imbibe copious amounts of wine which provides empty calories?

Chill out. A couple of trips to McD is not going to damage your child's health.

The earliest school trip i remember was to the theatre, and we were all itching to just go to the shop to buy chocolate. We were told we werent allowed!
The highlight of any school trip for us was the souvenir shop afterwards to buy a bookmark! How sad does that sound now!

powder28 · 21/03/2007 15:50

On the food side the school would take a set amount of money for the trip and then we would have sandwiches, crisps and chocolate or fruit given to us when we got there. Otherwise we took stuff in ourselves.
But I think sitting down to eat was always one of the best things about the trip. Mcdonalds isnt such a bad thing. My ds1 sometimes has a happy meal.

I like quarter pounder deluxe with the salad on. I LOVE the coffee as well, fresh black coffee, i love it

speedymama · 21/03/2007 16:13

I think someone said that they do porridge now so they could have porridge for breakfast and a chicken salad for dinner with carrot sticks on the side. That is healthy.

Just been their website and checked out the breakfast menu .

They do Oatso porridge, sliced fruit and orange juice.

TwoToTango · 21/03/2007 16:23

Is the cost of the meals included in the trip?

webmum · 21/03/2007 17:41

sorr can't avoid being conttroversial here, but if your alternative to MCD is a fruitshoot with crisps and lunchables, she might as well have macdonalds!!!

tigermoth · 21/03/2007 17:46

hmmm lots of messages on this one,

coming into this without reading the many (!) answers.

Yes, I think it's unreasonable to stop your dd going on a school trip purely due to risk of exposure to McDonalds fare. No matter what your views are on McD, it is only for one day and won't she feel left out if all her class go?

And she can have the organic milk and fruit bag or carrot sticks as part of her meal (not that I know the menu that well, of course.......)

powder28 · 21/03/2007 17:49

The token healthy food in mcdonalds tastes pretty awful. YOu might as well just have a burger and a mcflurry!

FrannyandZooey · 21/03/2007 17:50

Webmum I am pretty sure the bit about the lunchables was a joke

I would not be happy about this , not because I think eating at MacD's twice in one day is going to injure anybody but because I think it gives a really shite message that this is a fine and sensible thing to do. Or are schools not meant to be educating the children, any more?

WelshBoris · 21/03/2007 17:53

I don't think your'e unreasonable but I'm smug and a member of the food police and everything should be ok in moderation and inverted smuggery is the way forward and and and and and and

You get the picture.

Your DD, your call.

WelshBoris · 21/03/2007 17:53

Can't puncutate

stleger · 21/03/2007 17:54

I have never been in Australia, but I know distances are vast. My dd is going on a 5 hour trip tomorrow with packed lunch. Please tell me where school parties eat on the road in UK? I have seen them in museums, zoos etc - but not Harvesters etc.

WelshBoris · 21/03/2007 17:55

Or spell

punctuate

Hulababy · 21/03/2007 18:01

I think two trips in one day to McD's in too much for a school trip TBH. One fine, but why the need for two? Are there alternatives on the route do you know? Any idea why McD's is being mooted for both meals?

But yes, I'd let DD go and probably just whinge about it on MN, ather than actually doing anything else. I kknow DD's diet is generally good and well balanced, so also know that one day of McD's wouldn't be a problem overall.

Not ideal though.

Gingerbear · 21/03/2007 18:55

"Just to throw in some logistics (as an ex-Sydney sider), if they are travelling Sydney to Canberra on the highway (which I assume that they will), they have two choices only - MacDs or Burger King.

It is about 3 hours each way, and they are the only stop off options on the highway (I can even tell you where they are). "

Just bumping a little point of view from someone in the know (pooteroo??)

Without a detour to an equally dire fare roadhouse, looks like McD's is only option.

stleger · 21/03/2007 19:00

Australia - run by people of Irish descent - sounds just like Ireland. (But nobody has told me yet where British schools could reasonably go on such a long trip).

twentypence · 21/03/2007 19:37

This is actually the only way that ds could go on such a trip, apart from collapsing under a weight of ice packs and home made food.

It's a quick way to feed them, and Ozzie McDonalds do sell apples (cheaper than supermarket actually), bottles of water etc.

The kids that don't eat the healthy options will probably be sick on the bus

tigermoth · 21/03/2007 19:38

gingerbear, interesting to see the logistical facts of the situation

If that is true then yes, yes, yes it is unreasonable of the OP to stop her dd going on the school trip. IMO the school are not in the wrong to suggest McDonalds as a the place for a meal stopover. They have no choice really.

Unless they can organise a packed lunch stopover instead.

worcestercaroline · 21/03/2007 19:53

do u expect them to take their bowl of cereal and milk!!! Come on its for 1 day let the kids have fun, give them a multi vitamin and give them extra fruit and veg for a week!!!!!!! live a little

Hulababy · 21/03/2007 19:54

If that is the case GB, then yes, can totally see why they are having McD's both ways as their stop over.

Are they allowed to take a pack up if they like? That sounds like the best compromise for those not wanting two McD's in a day.

powder28 · 21/03/2007 19:59

I would have fries from burger king, they are crispier....
