WideWebWitch · 21/03/2007 13:00

A wind up I meant

kiskidee · 21/03/2007 13:02

no you are not. and as www said.

OrmIrian · 21/03/2007 13:06

Lazy planning IMO. Nowt wrong with the odd burger and chips in an emergency but I don't see how this consitutes an emergency...and certainly not twice in one day. Why can't they take their own breakfast for a start.

mm22bys · 21/03/2007 13:08

Haven't read all responses, but that is atrocious, once maybe would be ok, but twice in one day? Surely the school is more imaginative than that?

Agree it is sending out totally the wrong message - they're not sponsoring the school in any way are they?

suzycreamcheese · 21/03/2007 13:09

i think you are having sensible reaction to horrid idea for day out...why not at least one packed lunch..do they get commission from mcd's....
..i agree its all about the messages and might give then taste for the axel grease greeny talks of..

kiskidee · 21/03/2007 13:11

this from somebody who ate her last mcd in 1989 and it was her first too.

potoroo · 21/03/2007 13:14

Just to throw in some logistics (as an ex-Sydney sider), if they are travelling Sydney to Canberra on the highway (which I assume that they will), they have two choices only - MacDs or Burger King.

It is about 3 hours each way, and they are the only stop off options on the highway (I can even tell you where they are).

The school's only alternative is packed breakfast/dinner, or a long detour to one of the very few small towns - they would be lucky to find a cafe to fit everyone in.

stleger · 21/03/2007 13:30

They would need a breakfast stop, a lunch stop and a dinnertime stop wouldn't they (6.30 am - 9.00pm). If you were doing London to York and back, how would you plan it?

twelveyeargap · 21/03/2007 13:34

Yum, yum. Packed dinner sitting around on a hot bus for 12 hours. Appetising indeed. Even put in a cool box it would be vile by the end of the day.

kiskidee · 21/03/2007 13:48

you make an arrangement with a cafe in one of the small towns to prepare a set breakfast or dinner or whatever for them. a cafe would prob welcome the business.

they can make a picnic out of it.

stleger · 21/03/2007 13:55

The only 3 hour road trip i do regularly is Cork - Dublin. Some is motorway, some isn't. The roadside stops would be greasy spoon type places, hotels full of business men or pubs. None of which would greet a school party with open arms really, be suitable or provide anything much better. Presumably it also keeps costs down? On English motorway trips we tend to stop at service stations, where there would be a better choice but scope for losing time and pupils.

Traycee · 21/03/2007 13:57

ds1's (UK) state special school takes his class to macdonald's fairly regularly. Sometimes as an outing in itself- they go to supermarket cafes etc as well, and sometimes for a child's party. McD's have always been very accomodating (I've seen the photos), and ds1 surprised me by behaving extemely well when I took him by myself (I was planning on drive through- he was having none of it and was straight out the door). So they've obviously taught him something as well.

So UK schools DO do it.

I wouldn't freak about one day, nor would I bother complaining. If it was every mealtime then maybe.

suzycreamcheese · 21/03/2007 13:59

12yeargaps..surely lunch would be eaten before 12 hours had elapsed?..
..what age are these kids? ...why take them so far?
dont fancy being on bus for long time with kids who have only eaten at mcd's anyway...

harpsichordcarrier · 21/03/2007 14:01

Greeny - on a POI rabbits can't be sick. it's not physically possible.
get it right greenster.

Greenshoots · 21/03/2007 14:07

How do you know they can't be sick? We are talking about an animal that eats its own shit.

Which incidentally might be a healthier alternative to breakfast at McDonalds!!

ScummyMummy · 21/03/2007 14:27

Apparently rats and horses can't vomit either. I really feel I have learned something today now, thanks to greeny, harpsi and the great god google.

twelveyeargap · 21/03/2007 14:30

How did this thread move from McDonald's to vomiting horses? I am afraid to read down...

kks · 21/03/2007 14:34

Well i don't know wgat Jamie Oliver would say about this

kittywaitsfornumber6 · 21/03/2007 15:03

Very unreasonable and uptight imo, good grief let the child go.

kks · 21/03/2007 15:05

I don't think the school are sending out a very good message to the children but if shes gonna be left out then your gonna have to go with it

harpsichordcarrier · 21/03/2007 15:09

no RABBITS CAN'T BE SICK believe me I know about lagomorphs. they have useless digestive systems, hence the needs to eat their own poo.

harpsichordcarrier · 21/03/2007 15:11

anyway you're all totally bonkers about food and no mistake. it's meat, and bread and possibly a bit of chicken and oh yes some potatoes.

kks · 21/03/2007 15:19

Are you really that naive? If shes gonna be left out then yes let her have the mcdonalds twice in one day this once. I NEVER had mcdonalds when i was a kid. 1)My mum couldn't afford it and 2)She prefered to give us proper home cooked food and healthy food with the odd treats every now and then. mcdonalds food is junk food and not good for you.

stleger · 21/03/2007 15:22

Well sort of harpsi! Our local special school has a monthly trip to McD's using public transport. I can't believe I am defending Ronald's place, but I can't see many alternatives either. Having read the Chez Gerard thread.

Aloha · 21/03/2007 15:28

In England this would be unacceptable for lots of reasons, including the fact that alternatives are always available. However, this is Australia, the science museum is three hours drive away and from what people say, the only stops en route (for a wee as well as food and drink) will be Mcdonalds, then I think it has to be accepted.
I don't eat there for fun myself, but it's not that bad! It's only beef and rather processed bread and potatoes (though they are fried in partially hydrogenated oil, which isn't ideal)
I assume there is also a packed lunch to be provided. You can't expect kids to bring three meals with them.
