To complain to a shop for selling DD alcohol?

DD is only 16! She was with her friend as well (same age) and they purchased one of those Bailey's cans. It definitely requires age check. She doesn't look particularly old for her age and it's think 25 anyway! I'm not impressed and I appreciate its DD's fault for even trying to buy it and I've had strict words. AIBU?

They also have a responsibility to age check their customers.

I would report them to the police.

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 20/06/2017 14:38

Are you sure nobody produced a fake ID? It's very rare people get served without ID if they look under 25.

ThanksMsMay · 20/06/2017 14:39

Yes, you should complain.

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 20/06/2017 14:39

Shop them to the police, don't bother complaining.

Squishedstrawberry4 · 20/06/2017 14:39

I'd report them to the council/police

user1483387154 · 20/06/2017 14:39

I would definitely talk to the shop manager.

Hmmalittlefishy · 20/06/2017 14:39

Report to trading standards or community safety team at the council.
They are the ones that carry out test purchasing etc so would be able to send someone in and then act on it

fruitloops15 · 20/06/2017 14:39

@KungFuPandaWorksOut16 neither girls have fake ID and actually came home and said "I know you'll be mad but can you believe I actually managed to buy one" and then said how she was only telling me because she was surprised herself.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 20/06/2017 14:43

Surely you would do better to complain to the people who granted the premises a licence?

saoirse31 · 20/06/2017 14:43

I'd be more concerned about dd actually. They probably did have fake ids. Report away if u want but maybe try and dissuade your dd from drinking too.

Doilooklikeatourist · 20/06/2017 14:45

Report to the council and from there Trading Standards

ChicRock · 20/06/2017 14:45

neither girls have fake ID

Yeah, right.

Go into the shop and explain, date and time, and ask if they've got cctv.

Betcha they had fake id.

fruitloops15 · 20/06/2017 14:45

@saoirse31 I love how everyone on here thinks they know my DD more than me 😂

OP posts:
fruitloops15 · 20/06/2017 14:46

Yeah they really had fake IDs

"I'm going to complain"

"To be honest, you actually should mum"

I don't encourage her to drink and have already said I've had strict words.

OP posts:
Groupie123 · 20/06/2017 14:47

Could one of them have a much older boyfriend? When I was 16 I had a 25 yo bf who would buy alcohol for us.

Sammysquiz · 20/06/2017 14:48

I think it's more people are aware of the fact of life that teenage girls are unlikely to tell their mums that they have a fake ID

Littlecaf · 20/06/2017 14:52

If it was only a can of Baileys ice, I'd probably leave it.

witsender · 20/06/2017 14:53

Why would the daughter come home and tell the OP unless the story was genuine?

fruitloops15 · 20/06/2017 14:55

@witsender exactly, she'd just drink it and never say a word

OP posts:
CourseConcepts · 20/06/2017 14:55

Definitely the shop's fault and not your daughter's.

Perhaps you should explain that she broke the law and could have lost the cashier their livelihood rather than try to get someone in trouble.

I really struggle to understand how your mind works OP.

UserLotsOfNumbers · 20/06/2017 14:55

Contact trading standards.
MIL was disciplined once for selling a lottery ticket to a 14 yr old.
There are rules about what can be sold and at what age.

ChicRock · 20/06/2017 14:58

Why would the daughter come home and tell the OP unless the story was genuine?

Who knows?

Why buy a can of alcohol then come home and show mum, I mean what was the point in doing it in the first place?

Hardly something a teenager does for shits n giggles - does she know or even care she could potentially lose the cashier their job?

talkingtofrank · 20/06/2017 14:58

Don't you have better things to do? It was a can of baileys not a bottle of neat vodka. Some people have far too much time on their hands.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 20/06/2017 14:58

actually came home and said "I know you'll be mad but can you believe I actually managed to buy one" and then said how she was only telling me because she was surprised herself.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Confused

2rebecca · 20/06/2017 14:58

Why would she try buying a bottle of Bailey's unless she thought she would get away with it.
She sounds quite nasty deliberately winding her mum up by showing her the alcohol and encouraging the OP to complain to the shop she deceived. Is there a particular reason the girl wants to get the shop assistants in that shop in to trouble? It sounds as though there's a hidden agenda.
