Aibu to think that there id s gertsin 'type' who thrives in management.

Ive had many managers who have dubious characteristics... intimidating stares and confrontational , patronising, victimisation. There havw been the odd nice manager.

Does anyone have a genuinely lovely manager? Xx

My last manager was fab. He drove me bloody nuts as he changed his mind all the time but we got on brilliantly and he taught me so much. He was about 20 years older than me and I've left and set up in my own and he still puts loads of work my way and he's the best mentor I could have had. He rebuilt my confidence in myself after a truly terrible time professionally which left me nearly at breaking point

Onthehighseas · 16/06/2017 22:45

My manager is lovely. He drives me mad with his lack of organisation sometimes but he is a thoroughly decent human being.

Gingernaut · 16/06/2017 22:45

Nope. Almost none of my managers had 'soft' skills.

An alcoholic, an anorexic obsessed with feeding us home made cakes made with extra oils/fats so they made strange schlupping noises as we peeled slices off the cake tray, a passive aggressive narcissist who played mind games and bullied us so badly I left and needed therapy, an science obsessive who was probably somewhere on the ASD spectrum, ineffectual managers who were nice to everyone and had us all rolled over by senior management and my current one who takes it for granted that I know what she's talking about and talks to everyone like she's giving orders. Even her own family...

I've yet to meet a manager I like, who's good with people, knows the work and effectively deals with senior management.

bigtapdancingpimp · 16/06/2017 22:45

My manager is a Gemini. Typical flirty nightmare who wants to be adored by everyone, very duplicitous too.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/06/2017 22:52

Mine is quite nice - he is based about 250 miles away, I see him about once a year and speak to him a couple of times a month. We correspond by email maybe once or twice a week and he send me a birthday and christmas card and usually gets me a small voucher for M&S.

Other than that I am left to my own devices. The company is shit though and i'll probably be on strike soon, nothing to do with my manager though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/06/2017 22:52

Oi! I'm a Gemini! Boss is a Leo - his birthday is the same day as DS2s.

yetanotherdeskmove · 16/06/2017 22:53

Mine is great. Fair and funny and hard working and inspiring, running buddy and friend as well as manager.

BarryTheKestrel · 16/06/2017 22:53

My current manager is amazing. She is fair, she fights for our team, she's always willing to lend an ear if something is bothering you, she's always happy to help out in any way that she can to better us all.
My previous manager is this role was a Saint too, firm, fair and professional but happy to have a laugh with us all. He became a firm friend outside of work too after we dealt with the death of a colleague together. He's now moved offices and he is sorely missed.

However, the majority of the rest of the management team are questionable at best. With few exceptions they've all been recruited internally in a training programme and not trained properly so they have no previous experience and no idea how to manage a team of people of differing abilities.

SuperPug · 16/06/2017 22:54

Yes - bloody amazing. Supportive and gives us credit.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 16/06/2017 22:54

I have been told I'm a lovely manager- mainly because I support my team's career development and arrange opportunities for them to gain new skills and experiences to get ready for promotion, but also because I manage my team how I like to be managed. My own manager is lovely as a person but hopeless at his job.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 16/06/2017 22:54

Hmm Gingernaut you sound like a lot of fun!

HeddaGarbled · 16/06/2017 22:56

I've had the full gamut: lovely but ineffectual; effectual but mean; mean and ineffectual and that occasional rare diamond, an effective manager who was also a decent person.

I do know what you mean about the "type" but I think this depends on the culture and ethos of the organisation as created by senior management. I've often watched a new senior manager promote a succession of clones so that the management team start to look like the Midwich Cuckoos. IMO, the sign of a successful organisation is a diverse management team which makes space for the odd eccentric with a specialism.

WingsofNylon · 16/06/2017 22:58

Mine is great. I don't think nice is the right word you are looking for though. Managers need to be fair and authentic and knowledgeable and supportive, not just nice.

PatMullins · 16/06/2017 22:59

I've had some really terrible managers in retail, customer service and sales.

My current manager (NHS) is a wonderful human being. She made my transition back into work a breeze and I wish all managers were like her.

AmyGardner · 16/06/2017 23:04

Mine is flipping brilliant. Encouraging, bold, genuine, always knows what to say and kicks doors down not for her, but for me.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/06/2017 23:06

I do and the deputy manager

And their manager

We have a great team and all work really well together

Rinkydinkypink · 16/06/2017 23:08

Yes mine is lovely.

Sallystyle · 16/06/2017 23:09

Yep. All management here are lovely and fair.

user1495915742 · 16/06/2017 23:15

Where are all these nice managers? I think I must live in a parallel universe. Confused

justkeepswimmingg · 16/06/2017 23:15

I had a lovely manager, but she was bullied into quitting (don't know the ins and outs). Her replacement was a sour faced evil woman, who seemed to hate hard workers and love the lazy workers Hmm. Oh how I don't miss that workplace...

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 16/06/2017 23:17

I've had wonderful managers in all my jobs.

My current job has about six managers plus three upper level managers and each and every one is just lovely.

toconclude · 16/06/2017 23:19

Majority of mine have been fine to great. And my own staff love me.

user1497646537 · 16/06/2017 23:21

Mine is amazing! She doesn't let me call her my boss, she says ''we're a team'' its adorable

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 16/06/2017 23:26

I had a run of three great managers. The last one was so good, I commuted an hour and a half a day down the motorway to work with him. He made me feel confident and appreciated. Took all the shit from all sides to let his team do the best job they could. Incredibly smart and funny.

I couldn't help but marry him 😶 he's as good as a husband and father as he was as a manager, and I'd still work for him again.

MulderitsmeX · 16/06/2017 23:27

I like mine v much Smile
