I am fat, AIBU?

To show how ridiculous the BMI calculator is... My BMI is 19, yet look at the state of my body fat!

Sick of being told I don't need to lose weight as I'm 'skinny'.

AIBU to think that I am indeed too fat?

Do you live in a mansion??

Ha! Currently in temp house. There are many, many, many laps!

As you have no doubt just discovered by googling, the world health organisation classifies a waist to hip ratio of 0.85 and over as obesity.

This ratio is a much better predictor of health problems like cardiovascular disease than either waist measurement alone or BMI.

This strongly suggests that despite your overall weight being completely fine, you do in fact need to lose abdominal fat, as you suspected.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 18:38

Thanks so much user for helping me confirm what I thought. It's totally fatty and wobbly and has to go, despite what the bmi calculator says. I don't really have any fat on hips so (going by the waist to hip chart) my waist needs to be 29 inches to take me out of the danger zone.

Asmoto · 14/06/2017 18:38

You do seem determined to think of yourself as fat, OP, but as pps have said, I think it's just that you are untoned.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 18:42

Nope, I prob need to lose two inches from my waist to put me at less risk of diabetes, coronary heart disease and high BP.

My waist was 28/29 inches before... It's totally doable :)

OP posts:
IfNot · 14/06/2017 18:46

What is "untoned" even? Does this mean "a woman who has some fat on her body somewhere"?
So...most of us then?
There's nothing wrong with you OP.
Focus on being healthy and strong, and a good person.
I can't bear this trend lately of people asking other people to dissect bits of their bodies. Does your body work? Yes? Excellent. On you go.

BroomHandledMouser · 14/06/2017 18:52

IfNot - not everyone is happy with the way they look. The op was was putting herself out there to ask for opinions which people gave.

Kudos to you for being happy with how you are. Not many people are, myself included. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look and feel better

HildaOg · 14/06/2017 18:53

Untoned means your muscles are slack and flopping out. Most people can carry a few extra pounds well and look slim if they are toned - tight muscles! Keep everything in!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 14/06/2017 18:53

Waist to Hip ratio is interesting (and the total correct thing IMO - it put me at 'normal' Grin). I was 15st some before this pregnancy, 5'6", do a shit ton of exercise, but admittedly do eat too much chocolate. BMI is hideous and therefore I have to have a diabetes test this pregnancy ( I've been tested ever since I was about 5! I don't have diabetes!!!!) but I know I'm perfectly healthier and much healthier than a lot of my thinner friends. I am in proportion as the WTH ratio showed. I'm v v muscular and have more muscle mass than the average man. BMI is a crock of shit!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 14/06/2017 18:55

Also OP maybe you should try a programme like MuTu, specifically for building up ab strength.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 19:01

I've heard of MuTu - thanks for the reminder. I think the lady lives down my way...

HildaOg - my muscles are underneath my fat, so they can't help to hold it in!

OP posts:
Asmoto · 14/06/2017 19:07

IfNot No, I wasn't referring to fat, but whether muscles are firm or not - see the photo upthread from the poster who weighed over 15 stone but whose muscles were obviously very well toned so she didn't appear to fat or to have any loose flesh

I'm absolutely not saying that everyone should have firm muscles or even that everyone should be slim - it's just that the OP seems worried by her waist measurement, and toning her stomach muscles would be a way to reduce that without having to lose weight when she is already a very healthy BMI. Sorry if I caused confusion or appeared judgemental.

HildaOg · 14/06/2017 19:12

I was replying to another poster Pea. In your second shot you're not fat at all. Weight training improves us all but there's nothing you should be self conscious about.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 19:19

I'm not self conscious Hilda, just want to be as healthy as I can be, plus I know my normal healthy body shape is extremely slim (compared to others) as my frame is so little.

I would rather be shorter, have a bigger bum and more in proportion, but that's life :)

OP posts:
HildaOg · 14/06/2017 19:42

Do lots of squats for a bigger bum... Healthy as can be, I second that!!!

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 19:44

Will get squatting Grin

You're misunderstanding the waist to hip ratio stuff - someone with a bmi of 19 does not get classed as obese if their ratio is 0.85 or whatever. Past a certain body weight it's unreliable as the effect of less fat around the bum and hips means the hips are inevitably smaller than the abdomen, which holds internal organs. People who are starving can have such a ratio - it doesn't mean they are obese. It just means they have no fat on their hips.
Your thinking does sound a bit disordered about this. You are not fat, you are not flabby. You have a perfectly normal, on the slim side, body. If you want to get stronger and fitter that's great, most of us can benefit from that, but posting pictures o a slim person and insisting you're fat using any data point you can, isn't great.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 20:31

Will follow that up Banananana.

I don't think I'm fat all over Ana, but my midsection is undeniably fatter than what is healthy for me.

If I could show you a row of tall, naturally very slim female relatives, I would.

Will check out what GP has to say about BMI vs WTH. Another overall calculator I found shows percentage of general body fat in 'acceptable' range.

But as well as comparing clinical opinions, I know my own body, shape and history.

Stoneagemum · 14/06/2017 20:37

You're still not stood up straight thou, your lower back is curving forward to project your tummy.
Stand up straight with proper body tone see how you look then

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 20:49

Do you mean my 2nd pic? That's as straight as I can get my posture due to funny curves in my spine (genetic)

OP posts:
PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 20:50

Before I knew that I had a lifetime of people telling me to 'stand up straight' Grin

Pilates is amazing

user1491260401 · 14/06/2017 20:56

I do think the best thing for you to do would be to discuss this with your GP who can give you personal advice.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 21:04

Actually, my GP tends to be pretty useless on this sort of thing... Will ask my osteopath though.
