I am fat, AIBU?

To show how ridiculous the BMI calculator is... My BMI is 19, yet look at the state of my body fat!

Sick of being told I don't need to lose weight as I'm 'skinny'.

AIBU to think that I am indeed too fat?

My only thoughts on this are ..

How you doin? ;-)

(seriously though, the BMI thing is notoriously unreliable)

KatharinaRosalie · 14/06/2017 16:14

I know you didn't ask, but can I just say that your bra seems to be climbing up your back - the back size could be too big. Have you visited any of our bra intervention threads?

PollyPerky · 14/06/2017 16:14

I think it looks pretty normal but losing 2-3 lbs may get rid of the tummy flab. I am the same BMI as you- somewhere between 18.5 and 19. I need to lose fat from my middle. I know that another 2-3 lbs will shift it.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 16:15

Oh I know - it's because of the weight loss and I need to get remeasured now. There's a great store I visit who fit properly.

I think having seen you standing you have a just a teeny bit of a tummy. It's normal.

I really think at your height, and with those fabulous boobs you shouldn't be looking to lose weight. It's not necessary or healthy.

If your tummy bothers you then sit ups or Pilates or something to tone up maybe, but I suspect you aren't seeing yourself from an unbiased point of view.

Deathraystare · 14/06/2017 16:16

I am not giving out my BMI. I KNOW I am obese!

CiliatedEpithelium · 14/06/2017 16:17

It's your norkage that's raising the BMI though surely? If you had a pair of fried eggs it would be much lower. You look fabulous as you are. Lose weight if it makes you feel better but I am jealous as fuck. You got my share! Grin

greedygorb · 14/06/2017 16:17

I'll tell you how ridiculous a BMI calculator is -at a BMI of just under 25 I looked like death warmed up, my periods stopped and I was told to put half a stone on. But then I won the genetic prize of being short and stocky with big hips and tits and leg muscles a professional cyclist would be proud of. So when I'm in the overweight category I function at my best. Means I am officially 'fat' though and therefore undeserving of anything good. It's bollocks. I think you look good btw.

GeekLove · 14/06/2017 16:20

Looks like you might have quite high body fat but still have a lowish BMI - 'skinny fat'. However, that position could make you look fatter particularly if you are older who have recently given birth - I'll have roles like that in that position even though my body fat% is around 23% as measured by calipers.

My BMI is 27 but since my resting pulse rate is in the low 50s and I can do full pull ups I'm not sweating it. I am experimenting with 16:8 fasting and lower carb though - I want to see my abs again!

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 16:20

It just goes to show that feelings on body shape are all utterly relative - I hated being slim until I wasn't anymore! My nickname in school was beanpole and most girls hated me! I'm pretty sure I was more like 8.5stone at 18, and pretty tall - maybe 5'9 ish.

OP posts:
Ricekrispiecakes · 14/06/2017 16:20

You are NOT fat or overweight.

You have a fabulous height and weight.

The only thing that you should do, if you want to change your body, is some exercise, you don't need to lose weight just tone up.

GeekLove · 14/06/2017 16:21

greedygob you sound like me - built like a long legged Neanderthal. But being strong is cool and I bet you have a trim waistline.

I long ago decided I could either starve myself for slim thighs or build up my upper body and make them look slimmer - so there!

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 14/06/2017 16:22

You look like you have narrow hips and wide shoulders and a flat bum i.e an inverted triangle/apple shape. Basically you carry fat on your abdomen? There is probably only so much you can do to rid yourself of it she given your already at BMI 19 I would live with a bit of a tum if I was you.

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 16:24

Been doing 30-45 mins exercise daily rice - and have lost half stone in 2 weeks. It's dropping off.

paap1975 · 14/06/2017 16:24

BMI bang in the middle of healthy, never had any kids, but I have definite flab, worse above my belly button. I run 3 times a week and have done several half marathons but nothing improves it. My skin just isn't elastic like other people's

PeaFaceMcgee · 14/06/2017 16:25

Have def lost fat from boobs & belly recently. Want to keep going...

OP posts:
Kokusai · 14/06/2017 16:27

You are all scrunched up! Stand up straight and some of that is needed!

GeekLove · 14/06/2017 16:28

You can't outrun a bad diet. I'm not saying your diet is bad but do you drink much in the way of sweet drinks or much alcohol? Also do you eat a lot of white/beige carbs? That'll help you lean out - you might find you need to eat MORE food too. Not all calories are created equal.

GeekLove · 14/06/2017 16:30

To really transform your body - do some heavy lifting/bodyweight exercises - but remember your diet - you'll need to ensure you are eating enough after training to repair your muscles. You might find you put on weight, but pay more attention to your tape measure.

TatterdemalionAspie · 14/06/2017 16:32

Oh look, you're not at all fat after all, and now lots of people are telling you how gorgeous you are. Quelle surprise. Grin

Picklemuncher · 14/06/2017 16:32

Does anyone else LOATHE posts like this besides me? For too many reasons to even start....

ScarlettFreestone · 14/06/2017 16:33

Why do you want to lose more though?

Given the second picture I can't imagine you look anything less than lovely in anything you want to wear.

What's worrying you about how you look?

Picklemuncher · 14/06/2017 16:33

I really ought not to read anything that starts off with 'am I fat'. I will try not to in future!

BroomHandledMouser · 14/06/2017 16:35

I have a BMI of 28.7, I've attached a picture because it doesn't look like I do - it's so strange. I'm pretty short and stocky though.

OP, I think you just need to tone up a little. Maybe have a look at some HIT sessions online? Swimming is a good toner too 🙂

donkir · 14/06/2017 16:35

I think you're great as you are. You look a similar shape to me. I've had 2 children and need to tone up my tummy but definitely not lose any weight.
I'm a size 12, 5'7 and about 10st.
After my 1st son I went down to a size 6 bmi of 17 and it really wasn't good.
