Just that really.......
No aibu, just wanted to hear some funny sayings......

My nan said to me once, "if you don't know where the grave is, then don't lift up the coffin."

Also when I dumped my bf and I was feeling bad she said, "if duck doesn't leave the pond, then the pond will leave the duck."

Anyone with any to share? If I think of more I will add.

One of my Nan's favourites if someone didn't speak/chat to her properly "I didn't get Thanks, tarra, nor kiss my arse nor nowt" I make use of that one freely!

'home again, home again jiggerty jig' is one my Mum uses, it's from a nursery rhyme en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_market,_to_market

ProfYaffle · 13/06/2017 08:16

Kaytee, cf 'I didn't come down the Irwell on a piano' from Manchester

Pickleypickles · 13/06/2017 08:19

My nan used to say "youve Got a face like a bulldog sucking piss of a thistle" if you were pouting Smile

flumpybear · 13/06/2017 08:31

Pickles - my dad said .... like a bulldog chewing a wasp Confused

flumpybear · 13/06/2017 08:32

My grandad used to say 'I'll be buggered if I'm going to do xyz....'
never really thought about the meaning til I got s lot older and find myself saying it still by accident sometimes 🙀🙀🙀

Talith · 13/06/2017 08:37

I remember my grandmother referring to 'cupboard love' meaning love for someone based on what they had in the pantry not real love.

Also the classic when you are talking about someone gran didn't know "Who's 'she'? The cat's mother?"

lidoshuffle · 13/06/2017 09:34

"Y's a crooked letter and you can't straighten it" when as kids we'd be asking why, why, why all the time.

CurlsandCurves · 13/06/2017 09:57

DHs side of the family, when anyone says they're feeling poorly, got a headache or whatever, always respond with 'Not long now, then!' Meaning till you're dead, lol.

Cupcake1315 · 13/06/2017 22:40

These sayings are great! Just goes to show what we pick up when we're around others 😊

My friend says 'we had one of them
But the legs fell off' which I think came
From her grandmother
It means they have no idea what you're talking about

imonaplane · 14/06/2017 07:28

My favourite from my mum is "If my aunt had a moustache, she'd be my uncle".

Funnyface1 · 14/06/2017 07:36

"Your catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar". Because more flies is what we need!

LittleCandle · 14/06/2017 07:40

I used to hear 'I want never gets' or 'Want may be your master'.
All joints on the table will be carved.
Were you born in a field? If someone didn't shut the door.
Doesn't know their arse from their elbow.
Fur coat nae knickers.

Brown76 · 14/06/2017 07:50

The higher monkey climbs, the more you see his ass (the higher someone ascends in status the more they expose their ugly side).

Nothing lasts forever (so grit your teeth and get through it, or enjoy the moment).

Millionsmom · 14/06/2017 07:52

'To market to market to buy a fat pig. Home again, home again jig a de jig' whenever we returned from holiday.

'Am jiggered' for very tired

'Y wouldn't let it lie would y' when we wouldn't let something drop.

'I'll swing for ye' when I did almost anything ( meaning they'd kill me and be hanged)

'Wagons roll' setting off for anywhere

'It's 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other' both the same

'Hadaway n sh*te' when something unbelievable was said/happened

Every time we got undressed or dressed my DM would say "arms up for Jesus!" To put our arms in/out of the sleeves. She's not even religious, but her DP said it to her. She says to DC now!

Sgtmajormummy · 14/06/2017 08:10

"There's many a dirty shirt under a fancy wes'kit (waistcoat)."

Referring to people above their station or con-men.

makeourfuture · 14/06/2017 08:14

Grandfather:

Republicans hoard all the money on Wall Street, Democrats spread it amongst the people.

Hoppinggreen · 14/06/2017 08:19

If anyone complained it was too wet to go out my Nan would say
" you won't melt"
DH grandma had been an Austrian refugee after ww2 and had been through some awful times. Any complaints about life in general would be met with " nobody died"

CheeseOfHearts · 14/06/2017 08:26

'Laugh, I never thought me knickers were dry!'

OhTheRoses · 14/06/2017 08:26

There's most as queer as folk. All the world is queer but thee and me and even thee's a little queer.

When queer meant odd or peculiar. My grandma 1912-1999.

Also, "don't put the horse before the cart" and "give it some elbow grease".

80sMum · 14/06/2017 08:33

My dad used to say that someone, or something, that looks lovely on the outside but may not actually be quite as nice as it seems is "all fur coat and no knickers".

CaoNiMartacus · 14/06/2017 08:38

If we ever saw a pair of unsavory looking blokes, my nanna would say to me "I don't fancy yours much!"
