To think a Tory coalition with the DUP is a potentially terrifying prospect?

Not to mention the irony regarding so many ridiculous claims about corbyn sympathizing with terrorists. (The DUP are chock full of em!)

Who are the DUP, you may ask?

Some people are saying the LibDems should dump Farron, make Vince Cable leader and then have another coalition, but I doubt the LibDems would go there again...

That said, if the LibDems used another Brexit referendum as a bargaining chip, then we could all vote the right way this time, save a load of money that wouldn't be spent on Brexit and spend it on the NHS, then all live happily ever after....

(if only)

Niminy · 09/06/2017 12:04

LibDems have ruled out any coalition - with either lot. Even if Labour were constitutionally able to start talks about forming a government, which they're not, because the incumbent prime minister, if they have the largest party, has to unless they lose a vote of no confidence and have to call an election which they then lose. So the only possible coalitions are with the Tories and the LibDems won't do that. Farron said that about 1am last night.

hackmum · 09/06/2017 12:05

Surely no surprise that May would enter into an alliance with a bunch of extremist terrorist-sympathisers? Given her friendliness with Saudi Arabia, it's clear the woman has no moral compass whatsoever.

Niminy · 09/06/2017 12:06

Also this is really not a coalition. It's simply formalising what happens anyway which is that the DUP always vote with the Tories.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 12:06

Oh the irony hackmum

CaptainWarbeck · 09/06/2017 12:06

Right, so why might we be looking at another election soon?

Theresa May seems determined to keep going as PM and stay in power, what is it about working with the DUP would mean the Conservatives would call yet another election? Would there have to be a successful Tory leadership challenge first? Is that even likely?

0hCrepe · 09/06/2017 12:08

How much do all these elections cost us anyway!!

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 12:10

It's not working with the DUP that's the problem, it's the working with anyone I think. The coalition may be unstable and unproductive; the Tories could struggle to get any of their plans through, and the opposition could struggle to get anything satisfactory out of it either. So if it went to a vote in parliament MPs on both sides might think it would be better to have another go and see if one side or the other couldn't come away with a majority this time.

kirinm · 09/06/2017 12:11

Well done Tories. A far right fundamentalist group with terrorist roots 👏

CaptainWarbeck · 09/06/2017 12:12

So if it went to a vote in parliament MPs on both sides might think it would be better to have another go

So would it be a parliament vote on whether to have another election?

Niminy · 09/06/2017 12:14

Yes, because under the fixed term parliaments legislation there has to be a majority vote in the commons to call an election before five years is up.

Lasagnabreath · 09/06/2017 12:16

I'm from Northern Ireland but grew up in England. I'm back in Northern Ireland and I honestly don't understand the politics over here, at least not as well as the English politics.

From what I have read about the DUP has made my stomach churn. Even my partner (who didn't vote admittedly) said he would vote DUP but couldn't tell me anything much about them just that that's who we (Protestants) would vote for. I'm disgusted that they want to ban abortions and are against equal marriage that alone has terrified me.

user17829 · 09/06/2017 12:17

There is a lot of unnecessary panic going on on this thread. DUP are scum, always have been. But realistically nothing really changes as they were always in support of the conservatives.

The thing that is tickling me today is that for once, England is now turning its head and looking towards NI.

Hi there, how are you? Forget we were here, did you?

CaptainWarbeck · 09/06/2017 12:18

Ohhh I see, so if it seems to be unworkable having to depend on the DUP to get issues voted through etc, they could decide it might be better to go to the polls again and see if they can get a majority this time?

So there must have been a majority vote to call this election? It sounded from the media coverage like Theresa May just decided she was going to have one.

LovelyBath77 · 09/06/2017 12:19

It seems to be in the process...

It is a bit much on this thread. The unionists from NI have always voted with the Tories. This is no big change.

Lasagnabreath · 09/06/2017 12:19

Are the DUP terrorists?

ArseyTussle · 09/06/2017 12:20

It's not just that they 'want' to ban abortions, Lasagna, abortion in NI is already illegal.

It's a good thing that the rest of the UK are finally going to wake up to what a shower of cunts the DUP are.

Niminy · 09/06/2017 12:22

Labour voted for the election.

It's more likely that the govt will have to make significant concessions on major issues to get things through its own party. Both parties are still bitterly divided over Brexit.

It is a bit hilarious that people have suddenly noticed that the DUP exist. Ian Paisley, how quickly you were forgotten.

Jupitar · 09/06/2017 12:22

So when we have another election, we won't have to listen to all that crap again about Corbyn being a terrorist sympathiser....Smile

Lindy2 · 09/06/2017 12:22

I think a Labour/SNP coalition would be more of a disaster in my opinion.

Maudlinmaud · 09/06/2017 12:23

Well the Catholic Church also ban abortions so I'm afraid that argument is a bit senseless. Sinn Fein however are pro life, mostly catholics vote for them though.
Get your head around that.

BandeauSally · 09/06/2017 12:23

Every cloud...

Lasagnabreath · 09/06/2017 12:23

Yh that's a fair point, my bad. I think I blocked that due to my disgust when I first heard it. Either way they want to keep it that way and that makes me sick.

Jng1 · 09/06/2017 12:24

user17829 - and they are going to have to work with Scotland too to keep their 12 Scottish MPs happy.

Anyway, things to celebrate:

  • NO ukip seats
  • Nuttall gone
  • Record number of female MPs
