To think a Tory coalition with the DUP is a potentially terrifying prospect?

Not to mention the irony regarding so many ridiculous claims about corbyn sympathizing with terrorists. (The DUP are chock full of em!)

Who are the DUP, you may ask?

Of course Sinn Fein won't take their seats. It's a point of principle not to. Gerry Adams has already ruled it out.

Jng1 · 09/06/2017 11:28

The DUP has pretty much always supported the Tories, so not much new there - perhaps a bit more formalised.

Wrt to homophobic scaremongering comments - let's not forget that the Conservative's saviour in this election has been a modern, liberal, lesbian in Scotland! Her 12 wins outweigh those of the DUP and I imagine she will be a positive voice in the future direction of the Conservative party.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 11:28

Sorry Maud, I just saw that you voted Green - whoops! It's been a long night and my brain's a bit fuzzy Grin

user1496484020 · 09/06/2017 11:28

The DUP frighten the bejeesus outta me.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 11:29

...do you think we'll keep our free school lunches for now?

Of course I know that Niminy - that's why I prefaced it by saying it was a bonkers thought Grin.

I was clutching at straws last night trying to make it come through for Corbyn.

BandeauSally · 09/06/2017 11:30

but last night I was doing the maths and wondering whether JC could persuade Sinn Fein to take their seats

I saw a very funny meme about this yesterday but of course I can't find it now! Grin

Niminy · 09/06/2017 11:30

Actually the Tories being so dependent on Scotland will be very interesting.

Ravenblack · 09/06/2017 11:31

I have never even heard of the DUP until today! Confused

I understand they are very right wing? Against gays? 'living in sin?' stuff like that.

Not over the moon about this either. What's the alternative? Libdems? That didn't go too well last time did it?!

Maudlinmaud · 09/06/2017 11:31

Epoxy I thought I'd missed something Grin
This thread has been reassuring.

Pannnn · 09/06/2017 11:33

They are knucle-draggers with a nice line in terror.

Lets not also forget the sucking up she did to the Saudis who effectively back any reactionary Islamist group who want to take Islam back to the 7th century, includuing ISIS who claims responsibility for MCR and London Bridge.

And she dares point a bony finger at JC for "terrorist links".

BandeauSally · 09/06/2017 11:34

Not so keen on women having bodily autonomy either. Sad

Maxandrubyrubyandmax · 09/06/2017 11:34

Unlikely Sinn Fein will take their seats which in practical terms will give the Tories a majority even without the DUP. But these days I'd say all bets are off when it comes to politics. Worst case would be that Sinn Fein takes up their seats labour become their puppets whilst the Tories are beholdent to the DUP. Actually worst case scenario is it all goes back to violence

AFierceBadRabbit · 09/06/2017 11:35

fairly certain they're climate change deniers also.

but surely this cant be as bad as having corbyn as prime minister!

I challenged a Sinn Fein canvasser who came to my door this week about not taking seats and said voting for them was a waste of time and energy. I was wrong apparently. But it is a waste of time. Suck it up and go.

halcyondays · 09/06/2017 11:38

SinnFein would never take up their seats.

Riversleep · 09/06/2017 11:38

Yes, I hope it won't make much difference. 10 seats is nothing, and the Tories had their votes anyway. The LD's had 53 seats in the last coalition government and was thrown scraps from the table and was completely shafted. I hadn't thought about Ruth Davidson. Hopefully if they try and press for any of their hard right religious fundamentalist crap, the Scottish Tories will send them running for the hills.

deeedeee · 09/06/2017 11:38

So a Tory government with DUP support? People often talk about what it would take for Sinn Féin to take their seats at Westminster. Often they talk rot.
The political context in the north of Ireland is fascinating. Sinn Féin with a strong performance in the Westminster and Assembly elections are able to prevent any administration forming.
Their position in the Republic allows them to pressurise both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, the two larger parties. That pressure may play into the Irish government using or threatening to use its veto over a Brexit deal.
I think that there is a real possibility that concessions made by the Conservatives to the DUP may force Sinn Féin into a position where they consider taking their seats.
They will do this to defend the interests of nationalists in the north. Bringing down a DUP-supported Tory government in pursuit of the unity of Ireland is one of the very few ways Sinn Féin could convince their supporters that taking their seats was acceptable.

megletthesecond · 09/06/2017 11:38

Anti abortion and anti gay marriage I believe. FFS.

0hCrepe · 09/06/2017 11:41

It makes me feel pretty scared.
And yes to the continued feeble blaming of JC. Saying they have to do it to keep us safe - from this peace loving man.
We must look like a complete joke to other countries, so split over everything.

BreakWindandFire · 09/06/2017 11:41

Young earth creationists as well.

Boulshired · 09/06/2017 11:42

Wouldn't labour also need the DUP as well if they have to get pass the 326?

FlaviaAlbia · 09/06/2017 11:42

Not to mention that pesky evolutionism. I think it was the DUP culture minister at the time who wanted creationism added to the main museum in Belfast.

Add to all this, a paramilitary group that shot dead a father holding his 3 year old son in a supermarket car park in the middle of the day about a week ago publically endorsed them.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 11:43

They sound pretty terrible. But there are TEN of them! And even in a coalition of sorts with the Tories anything they proposed to get through parliament would need to be supported basically aaaallll the Tories (not all of whom are heartless bastards I'm led to believe) and probably a few of the opposition parties too. And they're mostly lefties.

So no matter how extreme and dodgy the DUP might be, they aren't going to be able to do an awful lot about it in all reality!

NapoleonsNose · 09/06/2017 11:45

Someone doesn't like the DUP on Wikipedia!
