To think a Tory coalition with the DUP is a potentially terrifying prospect?

Not to mention the irony regarding so many ridiculous claims about corbyn sympathizing with terrorists. (The DUP are chock full of em!)

Who are the DUP, you may ask?

^ that's right (epoxy's post). And it is not a formal coalition but a confidence and budget agreement - DUP agree to support Tories in a vote of confidence and pass the budget, everything else is issue by issue. DUP have no formal place in govt (unlike LibDem coalition).

christinarossetti · 09/06/2017 11:47

This is absolute desperation on May's behalf.

I agree that it's most likely that there'll be another election in the autumn.

0hCrepe · 09/06/2017 11:47

Shit. Surely most Tory voters don't want these people??

7461Mary18 · 09/06/2017 11:50

They won't have that much power particularly with the devolution already over there. It should work fine.

So the Tories will probably present their proposed bills and assuming they are passed continue.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 11:51

They've always been there OhCrepe, and they've never made all that much difference before. Just because their support gives the Tories a majority doesn't mean they're going to have a huge influence now - they can't - because thankfully things have to be voted through our whole parliament to be implemented. And almost half of that parliament is now the liberal left, not to mention the moderate Tories - then there's the lords, who won't be banning abortion any time soon! Fear not.

KatherinaMinola · 09/06/2017 11:51

Sensible post, Epoxy. The thing is, though, there'll still be a lot of horsetrading with them. The Tories need them in order to get pretty much anything through (unless they can get opposition support), so they will be doing certain deals with the DUP, just to get their own key votes through.

I agree that there are lines that the left wing (or the more socially liberal) of the Tory party won't cross though, and that is a comforting thought.

Yes everyone is crowing about teaching the Tories a lesson
But it's the worst possible result

Labour LOST big time.

This isn't only about brexit it's about everything.

I'm a Labour supporter and I'm sat here laughing. I can't wait to see the Conservatives implode in a mess they created.

How long until the DUP don't tow the line?

How long until a leadership challenge?

They've made their bed with their DUP terrorist loving mates (the irony!), I look forward to seeing them rot in it. Smile

Maudlinmaud · 09/06/2017 11:52

So the DUP want money to help the economy here. We do need money. Maybe it's not all bad. And yy to them having little sway.

Yeah, there'll almost certainly be money in it for the DUP, I'm sure that's what the BBC said sometime around 4am!

NoLoveofMine · 09/06/2017 11:56

Sounds like you've got a magic money tree there, userbottrends88 person.

cjt110 · 09/06/2017 11:58

Forgive my stupidity - Why wouldnt the Tories form a coalition with the Lib Dems?

0hCrepe · 09/06/2017 11:58

Thanks epoxy

Code42 · 09/06/2017 11:58

Do people really not realise that the DUP generally vote with the Tories anyway? It's not real news - it just gives them a bit more power Confused

0hCrepe · 09/06/2017 11:59

I think the lib dems wouldn't go there again.

KatherinaMinola · 09/06/2017 11:59

Forgive my stupidity - Why wouldnt the Tories form a coalition with the Lib Dems?

It's the other way round that's the problem, cj Smile.

KatherinaMinola · 09/06/2017 12:00

We all realize that, Code42 - read the discussions upthread.

EpoxyResin · 09/06/2017 12:01

Yup, no way would the Lib Dems have 'em! Plus their policies are almost completely opposite so they wouldn't vote in line and it wouldn't really be a "majority" of MPs/political views.

The DUP? The best thing I can say is that they will bring their expertise in radicalisation and terrorism to the bomb makers in WM. (weeps)

Boulshired · 09/06/2017 12:01

They have just said on BBC that labour would need the DUP as well as everyone else. DUP really do have all the power.

Elendon · 09/06/2017 12:02

Well, Parliament have to vote for another election, if it's called for. There will be many Conservative MPs aghast at this shaky and unstable coalition.

Within the Conservative Parliamentary Party, I predict a riot.

0hCrepe · 09/06/2017 12:04

Code I was worried because in the last coalition nick Clegg tried to bring policies more central whereas it feels like DUP will push further right. Ok I can see I don't really understand how passing things works but it feels like right and far right cosying up to make a majority rather than a reflection of an increased vote for the left.
