AIBU to be annoyed that I was told "no dogs allowed" at 'my' polling station. I think it's shit to expect dog owners to tie up their dogs outside or be held by strangers if visiting alone as anything could happen! Shouldn't be one rule for one venue and another rule for others when we don't have a choice of which polling station to visit.

I used to leave my dog outside shops. Two main concerns is your dog being stolen. And I had a very placid timid labrador and would come outside to find kids hurting him by being over enthusiastic, and the parents saying nothing. He would never bite or even growl, I just had to rescue him.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/06/2017 23:06

Also, a child might come and stroke them and while I know mine would never hurt anyone, I make sure I watch them all the time.

Wolfiefan · 08/06/2017 23:06

I would never leave my dog unattended. Theft risk.
I went to polling station with DH and pup. Intended to take it in turns to vote so one of us could wait with her. Pup and I were invited in. I was very surprised. Really wouldn't think dogs would be allowed.

I took my puppy, she's only 10 weeks and gets herself in a state in her own, I carried her in, she got loads of fuss from the people inside, I voted and left no issues. In and out in two minutes.

But surely you can see that with such a wide variety of buildings being used rules will vary from location to location?

This ^
There isn't one type of public building that is used for all polling stations. This time, particularly (with such short notice and no money in the pot) it has been even more difficult to find polling stations. If they start imposing universal rules then the owners of those building just won't offer themselves as polling stations.

No, it's not shit. I've recently been attacked by a dog and spent a week in HDU and another three in hospital.

Dogs, should be left elsewhere if you know you are going to have to tie them up and leave them - you are responsible for your dog and when you are inside shopping, voting, collecting kids from school etc. you simply cannot be responsible, neither can you have your dog under your control.

(I am a dog owner).

If dogs not allowed of course I wouldn't take him - but mine allows dogs so I do take him

That's why you live in a village where everyone knows each other, and dogs are just as welcome as people. They're just happy to see anyone, tbh it's such a small place Grin.

I have a 12 year old rescue mongrel who is friendly with owt not furry.

Our Village shop has a dog chain and am happy to tie her up whilst I go inside. She looks like a complete thug though - she has a face of 'please love me! ' and a body of 'You stole my pint? ' She is SO lovely.

I went to vote this morning at 7am on the dog walk prior to work, tied her up outside, and when I came out she was getting on famously with a labour canvasser /supporter...

My dog came in to vote with me. The ladies in there were thankful for the boredom relief and insisted the doors were closed and he was let off the lead for cuddles and running.

Oldsu · 09/06/2017 01:02

ChardonnaysPrettySister agree I have had at least 3 occasions where someone has tried to nick one of my 3 Pugs.

Luckily is was raining so they were happy to stay in the warm and dry - My Pugs don't like rain

Leaves dog at home. Votes. Returns home. Everyone lives to tell the tale.
