I recieved a letter from my gas company telling me they owe me £500.

Which is excellent.

I'm beyond skint. I've already spent every penny and was looking forward to have a coat, more than one pair of pants etc.

They asked for an updated meter reading as they estimated my last one.

Their estimated reading was 1439.

My actual reading was 1435.

I filled in their online form and sat back and waited for my money.

They say I owe them £700

They've put my gas bill upto £76 per month which is almost three times what I was paying.

I feel sick. I cannot afford this. At all.

If is this correct I will need them to turn the gas supply off.

Op I hope you get it fixed. I had all sorts of trouble with npower. for a while they told me I owed more than £10000. Then I was in credit then in debt. It then it turned out they had two open accounts for me and they had happily be estimating massive readings for the second account which I wasn't paying off and to compensate they upped my direct debit on the account I was paying off.

I switched using money saving expert to Sainsbury's energy and now save ££ a month and don't face to deal with Eejits.

We had major issues with EDF and they wanted nearly £1000. It turned out that the meter was faulty and they owed us £400
OP you can apply to the British Gas Energy Trust for help, even if you aren't a British Gas customer. I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Abit surprised how much everyone is paying... 3/4 bed here £59 dd per month octopus energy with the best customer service ever. They reply to emails within an hour or two, answer the phone. Send me an email requesting readings, let me know dd is coming out by email. Seriously best decision i ever made to move 2 years ago. Thank you compare the meerkat. Look on their fb account and loads of people saying the same. If they turn into the others ill move again.

Interestingly i used to get a £0 bill from british gas at a previously property about every 2 months as there was gas but not in my flat. I requested they stop sending the huge amount of paperwork and they said legally they had too. What a waste of paper and postage.

Of it does work out that you do owe arrears on the gas and you can't afford to pay off both the gas youre using and the arrears then speak to Stepchange or another free debt advice service to help to agree a payment plan for the arrears. As long as you are paying something each month against the amount you owe it's usually ok. My sister got into financial difficulties and Stepchange helped her agree a deal with all her creditors where she paid each of her creditors £1/month in exchange for having the debt frozen for 12 months while she got herself straight.

RedDahlia - I think there's something they didn't tell you. Otherwise they have tariffs that are 10 x more expensive than others. I know some tariffs are a rip off, but surely not that much!
