not to have agreed to pay for something of strangers that my child lost?

I took DS and DD swimming today. DD got out to use the children's slide. In the meantime, a lady put some ear plugs in and the container on the side of the pool. DD tripped over this as she turned around and fell over onto her knees. The lady came over and said that DD had knocked her earrings that had been in the (open) case down the drain. I apologised but couldn't hear her too well as I was consoling a crying DD over her sore knees. When DD calmed down, the woman demanded I pay the £100 the earrings apparently cost. I apologised again but said it was an accident and there's good reason for the signs saying to leave valuables in the lockers provided in the changing rooms. She began swearing at me so we moved away but I saw her complaining to staff later who didn't approach me so I presume they were of the same opinion as me.

AIBU to not have agreed to pay?

Yanbu

lightcola · 04/06/2017 22:43

No. I wouldn't have considered paying either. If your daughter had deliberately put them in a drain then maybe, but otherwise tough titties.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 04/06/2017 22:43

No YANBU, if she is silly enough to leave expensive ear rings on the side of a swimming pool that is not your problem!

GeillisTheWitch · 04/06/2017 22:44

YANBU. You only had her word that there were any earrings in the first place and that they weren't £2.50 ones from primark. Either way, she left them lying about so it's her responsibility.

StaplesCorner · 04/06/2017 22:45

Wow - your DD was hurt, the woman caused an accident - you should ask HER for £100!!

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 04/06/2017 22:45

She's trying it on. Just wanted some cash. Container was probably empty.

Who leaves valuable stuff on the side of a pool.

MipMipMip · 04/06/2017 22:45

Yes. Was bloody stupid of her.

The centre can presumably check the filter for her but as she didn't follow the rules I'm guessing she can't claim on their insurance. Nor does she deserve to.

I wonder what the position would be if your DD had stabbed herself on one of those earrings when she fell. Would the woman be happy to be sued?

TitaniasCloset · 04/06/2017 22:45

Who leaves expensive earrings laying about by the side of a pool? Foolish woman. Yanbu.

Magicpaintbrush · 04/06/2017 22:45

She shouldn't leave her possessions where people can trip over them in the first place! What a stupid woman - she should apologise for causing your child an injury by leaving stuff lying about on the poolside.

MaisyPops · 04/06/2017 22:45

I wouldn't go swimming in £100 earrings and if I were to be that silly they'd not be in an open pot.

YANBU.

UrsulaPandress · 04/06/2017 22:46

Cheeky mare.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 04/06/2017 22:46

A valuable lesson for her (if she's telling the truth). Yanbu. Only exception might be if you and your child broke into her house to use her private pool.

MipMipMip · 04/06/2017 22:46

Sorry, I meant No, you were not unreasonable.

Mysteriouscurle · 04/06/2017 22:46

I bet they didnt cost £100 and she set your daughter up to con some cash out of you. Well done you for refusing. If it was genuine what on earth was she leaving valuable ear rings there for?

If they were so precious, why did she leave them unattended at the side of a public swimming pool?! Confused

YANBU

DontTouchTheMoustache · 04/06/2017 22:46

I would have told her off for leaving a trip hazard at a pool as it's incredibly dangerous and she caused your DD to get injured. Silly woman.

Cheby · 04/06/2017 22:47

YANBU.
It's entirely the woman's own fault. She shouldn't have worn a £100 pair of earrings to the pool, once she'd done that she shouldn't have worn them to swim in, she should have got out and put them in her locker.

SeamusMacDubh · 04/06/2017 22:48

There were no earrings. Woman is trying her luck and thought she could scam some cash out of you. YANBU.

fakenamefornow · 04/06/2017 22:48

Let me get this right. She took out her £100 earrings and left them on the side of the pool? Then she did what, swim away? People are barefoot around swimming pools, stepping on them would have really hurt. She deserved to lose those earrings. Buy your DD an ice cream from me.

user1483617032 · 04/06/2017 22:50

If she cared for her earings that much, she would have left them at home or put them in a locker. I would have told her to do one.

NennyNooNoo · 04/06/2017 22:50

Sounds like a scam. Who would leave £100 earrings in an open box by the side of the pool? If she did, then she's pretty stupid. Theft from the sides of swimming pools are common. We have lost £10 goggles this way ( child took them off and left them at the side) so I'm sure someone would jump at the chance to steal some valuable and easy to conceal jewellery.

UnicornSparkles1 · 04/06/2017 22:51

YANBU. Sounds like she was trying it on TBH. Hope your DD was okay.

AyeAmarok · 04/06/2017 22:52

Her fault for leaving expensive earrings somewhere so bloody stupid.

Daft bint.
