not to have agreed to pay for something of strangers that my child lost?

I took DS and DD swimming today. DD got out to use the children's slide. In the meantime, a lady put some ear plugs in and the container on the side of the pool. DD tripped over this as she turned around and fell over onto her knees. The lady came over and said that DD had knocked her earrings that had been in the (open) case down the drain. I apologised but couldn't hear her too well as I was consoling a crying DD over her sore knees. When DD calmed down, the woman demanded I pay the £100 the earrings apparently cost. I apologised again but said it was an accident and there's good reason for the signs saying to leave valuables in the lockers provided in the changing rooms. She began swearing at me so we moved away but I saw her complaining to staff later who didn't approach me so I presume they were of the same opinion as me.

AIBU to not have agreed to pay?

YANBU. Apologies was more than enough

chitofftheshovel · 04/06/2017 22:55

Absolutely yanbu.

ophiotaurus · 04/06/2017 22:57

Nah she was trying it on.
If not, she shouldn't have left valuables at the side of the pool in an open container!

ItsNachoCheese · 04/06/2017 22:57

Why go swimming in earrings that are valuable to you irrespective whether they are £100 or £1000 any sane person would put them away safely in a locker before entering the water surely?

Athome77 · 04/06/2017 22:57

THe original post says ear plugs- not ear rings.

If she needed ear plugs to swim with- why did she take them out. I know they can cost a lot if mounded to fit the ear, but your supposed to swim with them in not leave them on the side.

WarriorsDance · 04/06/2017 22:58

In the meantime, a lady put some ear plugs in and the container on the side of the pool. DD tripped over this as she turned around and fell over onto her knees

How big was this case/container that your daughter tripped over it? Confused

ophiotaurus · 04/06/2017 22:59

The op said the lady put ear plugs in and had put the alleged earrings in the open earplugs container.

Viviennemary · 04/06/2017 22:59

She should be the one to be sued for leaving a hazard by the side of a pool.

WarriorsDance · 04/06/2017 23:00

Seriously, how big is this container that @OP's daughter can trip over it and hurt her knees Hmm

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/06/2017 23:03

Who the fuck takes 100 pound earrings swimming then leaves then on the side ...

She's having you on...

LottieG100 · 04/06/2017 23:05

You can trip over something little and still hurt your knees on the hard floor Hmm

If I was her I'd have felt bad for causing a child to trip and annoyed with myself for not having put my stuff away.

NoSquirrels · 04/06/2017 23:05

Surely a scam! I'd not have paid either. Blimey!

WarriorsDance · 04/06/2017 23:07

@LottieG100 but tripping over an earplug/earring case? (unless it was superglued to the floor I suppose)

WarriorsDance · 04/06/2017 23:10

Anyway, irrespective of the size of the container YANBU to tell her to naff off.

LauderSyme · 04/06/2017 23:10

YANBU - everyone else has already said why not. She was either daft or lying.

pringlecat · 04/06/2017 23:11

Your DD should have looked where she's going, so it's not the woman's fault she tripped.

The woman should have put her earrings in the locker, so assuming she did have earrings in that container, it's not your DD's fault.

You were right to 1) comfort your DD and 2) apologise, but compensating the woman for the loss of the imaginary earrings would have been a step too far.

YANBU.

tiptopteepe · 04/06/2017 23:12

No way would i have paid! YANBU! Utterly ridiculous thing for her to do she couldve really hurt your child. Its not safe to leave things on a slippery poolside!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 04/06/2017 23:12

YANBU at all. Well done for not falling for her scheme. And if, by some chance, there genuinely were earrings that cost £100, the swimming pool staff may have been able to retrieve them from the filter.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 04/06/2017 23:13

You can trip over the tiniest thing but if you lose your balance and fall on your knees, it's still going to hurt, especially on the tiles at the side of a swimming pool! What a silly comment.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 04/06/2017 23:14

YANBU and she was trying it on.

Pallisers · 04/06/2017 23:14

I'd be very suspicious that this was an opportunistic scam.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 04/06/2017 23:15

Shouldn't the woman have apologised to your daughter? She was responsible for her being hurt.

ALittleMop · 04/06/2017 23:17

As . If.
Total chancer
YANBU

ThatWouldBeGreat · 04/06/2017 23:17

Knowing me I would have probably given her the money back.

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/06/2017 23:21

And anyway earings dont exactly roll and if im.picturingbthe drain right they are just like tiles except with teeny slats it would have been one he'll of a kid air manoeuvre to get earrings to fly out the box and turn exactly the right angle to disappear..
