To not understand why we need so many new homes

Just as in the title really. I keep hearing about us building all these new houses but where are all the people currently living? There are tonnes of houses for sale in the property pages of our local paper.

I really dont understand why we can't make better use of what we have?

Because we have net migration of 250,000 and people are having children. House prices are very very high because we don't have enough supply for the demand.

Because so many families split up, and end up living in two big houses instead of one.

mumonashoestring · 04/06/2017 21:11

Because as a species we're living longer than we ever have before - if you add 10-20 years to average life expectancies & consider that more children now survive to adulthood it's hardly surprising that the housing burden increases.

Pebbledash7 · 04/06/2017 21:14

But does affordability not in part come from lifestyle i.e. saving by going without other things. I only know 2 couples out of all of my family and friends thst dont own a property. One couple have very low paid jobs because by their own admission they didnt qualifications snd the others love holidays abd new cars too much to save.

The other thibg thst winds me up is people thst choose to have children with nowhere to live & then complain they cant afford any where to live.

I believe we should have part buy part rent schemes as i think they are a fab way of getting oeople into home ownership but im totally against increasing the amount of social housing.

OP, either you are being extreeemly goady, or extremely naive/stupid.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/06/2017 21:15

They're not the same houses every week you dipstick Grin Plus each person selling a house will be likely buying another so it's not representative of those people who need somewhere to live (shocker: not everyone can afford to buy a place!), just representative of those people who are selling a property.

We need more new homes to live in because there are people who live in cramped conditions, sleeping on sofas and stuck living at home with their parents until their 30s.

Don't you watch the news or read the papers?

Totally agree with the previous point about affordable homes.

millmoo · 04/06/2017 21:18

Because some of the new houses that are being built are social housing -do you know how many families are living in temporary bed and breakfast accommodation or how many families are living in over inflated private rents

BanjoStarz · 04/06/2017 21:19

Because there's only so much saving by going without that you can do...it's not necessarily the case of going without a weekly takeaway or buying the next brand down in the super market.

So we need to build more, it's simple supply and demand.

We don't make the best use of the housing stock we have, older couples should be incentivised to give up large family homes, tax breaks for single people living in house shares rather than each taking up a house would also help.

There are many things that can be done...but building more seems to be the most culturally acceptable.

Jupitar · 04/06/2017 21:20

Because there are people living in b&b accommodation long term because there are no houses available.

We desperately need more council houses, the government current pays for families to live in 1 bedroom at a b&b, they could have built a council house for the amount that's paid in 6 months rent.

Pebbledash7 · 04/06/2017 21:25

This isnt goading i genuinely feel this way.

Why are people having children they cant house (before anyone says it yes circumstances chage ) how many people have children without getting themselves financially secure with somewhere to live.

Its fine i can have kids, not get an education for a well paid job and i will get housed anyway.

We bought a nice house in a nice rural spot and ive just heard that affordable housing will go up on the fields around us. Our lifestyle will be compromised, our hard earned house worth less money & our little village school will go downhill.

So many people in their twenties have to live with parents now - or in houseshares. You see a standard three bed terrace for example and you might imagine that there is one family of four there. In reality there's likely to be four single adults (one in a converted lounge), or a family with two grown up children and quite possibly their own partners in there too.

The four single adults would likely be happy to have a one bed flat to themselves - or a two bed with a single friend. Not all mind, but plenty would.

Then the 3 bed terrace they live in frees up for one of the couples living with a parent and siblings to have - they can then have room for children.

We need far more smaller places to live for childless couples, single people, single parents with one child, elderly people etc. These are people who also need affordable homes.

Take a look on Right move for one or two bed flats/small houses near you. I guarantee the vast majority are either expensive apartments in complexes that lots can't afford, or cramped rooms above shops etc which people can afford but most won't prefer. That's certainly the situation round me.

We need more houses that are fit for different purposes to enable every adult in the UK to choose to live however they prefer affordably - alone, with a partner, friends or family. Right now there aren't enough for most to choose.

Pebbledash7 · 04/06/2017 21:28

On another note - why dont we return to social housing being in flats. I mean this genuinely. It takes up less land and rent would be lower.

Cross posted.

Why are you afraid of affordable housing being near you? The best way to have the country is with houses of all kinds being close to each other so you don't end up with 'bad' areas for housing.

How will living near a poorer person than yourself compromise your lifestyle exactly?

There are some lovely big houses not a far walk from mine, I'm certain my existence a few streets away doesn't hinder their lives at all. Why would it?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/06/2017 21:34

Do you know anything about social housing or shared ownership at all?

I ask because you have said some staggeringly ignorant things on this thread.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/06/2017 21:35

Maybe try less "feeling" and more thinking?

CaulkheadUpNorf · 04/06/2017 21:37

Oh. Wow. Shall we bring back the back to backs too?

YouTheCat · 04/06/2017 21:39

Why didn't I use my degree and get a higher paid job so I could afford to buy a house? Maybe that was because I could only work part time due to caring for my severely disabled child.

Where do you think all the people on minimum wage should live?

PeaFaceMcgee · 04/06/2017 21:41

Ha! Good one... Hmm

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 04/06/2017 21:41

People like you who are so ignorant and naive OP make me so angry that I can't even respond to your bullshit.

Gazelda · 04/06/2017 21:42

We need more housing because there are more people needing housing.
We need more social housing because some families are unable to afford the Sky high prices of houses both rental and for sale. Some families are unable to work, are stuck in low wage jobs etc.
Children who live in social housing deserve space and access to outdoors as much as anyone else. High rise flats often lead to people isolated in their flats, which can have further health repercussions and lead to increased need for social and medical care.

bunnylove99 · 04/06/2017 21:45

Biscuit have my first ever, and enjoy it from your ivory tower.

SecretNutellaFix · 04/06/2017 21:46

Your thinking is flawed.

High rise flats equal large numbers of people living within a very restricted space. This leads to poorer mental health, poorer physical health, many of these flats would be inaccessible for people with extra mobility needs, etc.

Plus, not everyone can have a well paid job. Who would serve in shops, clean public toilets, work in bars, pick food crops?
