To be annoyed at cars flashing to overtake?

moutonfou · 04/06/2017 19:09

I was on a dual-carriage way, traffic in the inside lane going about 65mph, me in the outside lane overtaking several cars steadily at about 70mph (okay, maybe it was a couple over that...). And then someone comes up behind me at 80+mph and starts flashing me, presumably to get in so he can continue to speed.

AIBU to think the overtaking lane is for overtaking and as long as I'm doing that, I've every right to be there? And that there's no god-given right to travel at 80mph even if that's your thing?

I assume the poster meant stopping at roundabouts when it's obviously clear.

WellThatSucks · 04/06/2017 19:52

I'd move over or let him in while reserving the right to call him a twat in the privacy of my car then I'd forget about him and move along with my day. Like a pp I don't want impatient knobs behind me and I don't want to be the one to cause a road rage incident, it's not my job to police speeders.

TittyGolightly · 04/06/2017 19:55

I'm sorry I'm a little confused - who doesn't stop at roundabouts to check for traffic ?

No need to stop if a roundabout is clear (that's why they have give way lines, not stop lines).

Roundabouts round here with perfect sightlines. You can see from half a mile away that there's nothing on them. Remarkable number of people stop anyway. Idiots.

Ariawyn · 04/06/2017 20:06

(however, if you were in the outside lane the whole way doing 71 mph to overtake stuff doing 70mph i'd have wanted to flash you to hurry up or move over as well)

As the national speed limit is 70mph you'd be a bit of a dick to try and hassle another driver to move over so you could go faster

TittyGolightly · 04/06/2017 20:15

The national speed limit isn't 70mph. On some roads it's 60mph and it doesn't apply to all vehicles.

And when your car speedo reads 70mph you could actually be doing just 63mph. Someone actually doing 70mph would absolutely want you out of the way.

Laiste · 04/06/2017 20:21

I stand corrected about the illegal to flash at all thing.

Flashing purely to let another motorist 'know you are there' but without conveying any aggression or intimidation is a fine line to have to walk though Grin

justkeepswimmingg · 04/06/2017 20:22

Sounds like they were maybe in a rush, or being impatient (still no need for reckless driving though).
I know you shouldn't, but there's been times where I've flashed to tell people to move over. It's that or undertake. You get a lot of idiots driving in the 2nd/3rd lane, when the 1st lane is clear, and will just lane hog. I'm pregnant, and have a toddler, so there's no chance I'm risking our lives undertaking when I can flash for the idiot to move. Also I don't feel like being stuck behind someone doing 40 in a 60, when there is no reason to be Smile.

I did say i'd WANT to flash. Not that i would flash. I'm sure we all here are more than happy to never do more than 70mph at all times.

Ariawyn · 04/06/2017 20:27

Hmm ok the top end of the national speed limit is 70, meaning you're not technically allowed to go faster than 70mph on UK roads (better?)

And maybe someone's Speedo isn't at highly calibrated as yours but a it's still dickish to harass someone doing a close to speed limit speed while they are overtaking

Orlantina · 04/06/2017 20:28

This.

Laiste · 04/06/2017 20:29

Is that to me or titty? Only it was me you quoted earlier.

Laiste · 04/06/2017 20:30

That was to aria.

TittyGolightly · 04/06/2017 20:31

Also pretty dickish to be a one person rolling road block. Wink

Orlantina · 04/06/2017 20:34

So what speed do you recommend someone does when overtaking a large number of lorries doing 60mph on the A1? That can be a very long line.

Should I do 70? 80?

When should I cut back in so someone who has to go much faster can get past me?

BlackberryandNettle · 04/06/2017 20:35

Yanbu op. I never move over so some disk can have a lane to themselves to speed. They can wait, why should your day be held up?

BlackberryandNettle · 04/06/2017 20:35

Dick!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 04/06/2017 20:35

I just drop my rear view so I can't see them.

I never understand it though, we are taught to slow down if someone tailgates so what do they think would happen?! I wouldn't move for some cretin flashing their lights.

annandale · 04/06/2017 20:35

My xh used to do this. So happy never to have to sit in a car with him again.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 04/06/2017 20:37

I don't care if you have 12 toddlers in the car. Any dick doing that behind me can get to fuck. My life is more important.

Birdsbeesandtrees · 04/06/2017 20:41

Ive also had a guy come up behind me when I was overtaking a lorry on the A1 (so only 2 lanes) in my little car. I was doing 70, it as the middle of the night and there was one around at all then this guy just zooms up behind me (he must have been going 100mph) fucking flashing his lights and shit.

Cock.

bimbobaggins · 04/06/2017 20:45

Just pull in to let them past. Two wrongs don't make a right, they are being a dick by flashing but don't stay out just to prove a point. Maybe if everyone stuck to proper lane discipline this would be less of a problem. and no you don't need to stop at a roundabout unless there is traffic approaching.

Birdsbeesandtrees · 04/06/2017 20:46

Where I live there is always bloody traffic.

Mulledwine1 · 04/06/2017 20:50

if you're sitting in the outside lane you should be moving out of the way if it's clear someone wants to pass you, sorry

I disagree if you are doing 70mph.

If the inside lane is completely empty, I can kind of understand the frustration even though nobody should be doing more than 70. But sometimes you can see someone up ahead in the inside lane, and you can also see a lot of traffic coming along in the outside lane, so moving in would just cause you to be stuck behind the slow moving vehicle ahead for ages because you can't get out again. And I think weaving in and out of the inside lane is dangerous.

who doesn't stop at roundabouts to check for traffic

me, if I can see from miles back that nobody is coming. However, my local area (Hampshire) does not like people like me and has deliberately put fences and plants in strategic places at a lot of local roundabouts so you can't see and have to come to a complete stand-still.

TittyGolightly · 04/06/2017 20:51

Should I do 70? 80?

70 is fine, so long as it is 70. Should take less than a minute to overtake a lorry doing 60. If it takes any longer you are probably doing more like 63 mph.

Birdsbeesandtrees · 04/06/2017 20:52

Deliberately sitting is one thing but while overtaking it's a bit different.
