To think maybe I could wear a swimsuit?

Hi there, I'm a regular but name changed for this. I'm off on holidays to Italy with dh and two teen daughters. I'm currently a size 18/20 and
Very thigh heavy. I've lost 1.5 stone but it's a drop in the ocean. Inspired by a previous tread on here by someone going to Disneyland and worrying about what to wear, I've taken on-board some of the advice and got myself a pretty decent holiday wardrobe and most importantly comfy foot wear. I'm pretty pleased with what I've got and feeling happy with that side of it
However we're going to a campsite which has really decent water parks and activities. Dh wouldn't be bothered about any of that but my dds will and so would I if I weren't so heavy. I'd resigned myself to just lying beside the pool and not taking part but I think it'd be pretty unreasonable of me not to join in when my dds ask. So what I'm asking is, is can anyone recommend swim wear that looks ok on heavier women and also if I'm been unreasonable to think it's ok to reveal so much of myself to the unsuspecting public?

You can wear whatever your favorite thing to wear is. Sod the public, the expectation having bastards! GrinGrinGrin

There are some brilliant body positive accounts on Instagram. Basically people of all shapes and sizes wearing a variety of swimwear/underwear. It sort of adjusts your eye and the idea of your own body in your cossie becomes less uncomfortable.

It's important to feel as comfortable as is possible for you though. Choose something you would really like to wear and go from there with shorts or different modifications? I once wore a plain black one piece with a neon pink, long t shirt with fringing on the bottom at a water park. A couple of people commented but I just lied and said I was sunburnt.

If I need to get my body out I find that a nice salt scrub and thick body butter in the two weeks leading up to the event helps. It doesn't make me look any different but there's something about engaging with your whole body, rubbing a nice cream in and having a bit of massage that can help you make friends with the bits you don't like.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for all the links, much appreciated. I've been looking at pics of curvy swim wear on Instagram and have noticed that the women wearing colour and more detailed stuff than just plain black look so much better. Pretty much like what single pringle described
I've only two weeks so I'm limited to buying from here in Ireland or UK.

I have a lovely swimsuit with skirt. I love it, brought from bonmarche. Hide my hanging tum and larger thighs. I feel lovely in it and gives me confidence - I'm an 18.

I ordered a few into store and tried them on.

EnormousDormouse · 04/06/2017 20:19

I've had a couple of cracking Melissa Odabash swimsuits from Simply Be in the sale for about £15 each. Loads of invisible support and top quality for the money.

00alwaysbusymum · 04/06/2017 20:20

I wore a costume when that size many many years, marks and spencer tummy ones good, make sure you have support for bust, and some nice cover ups for walking around in!
Also Boden & joules are good

Liskee · 04/06/2017 20:20

Simply Be or Bravissimo! Honestly they have ruching, underwire, control panels the lot. It's not going to make you feel like a size 10 but it's going to make you feel like you're allowed to wear a swimsuit!!

I love those memes on FB about a bikini body.

How to get a bikini body. Get a bikini, put it on your body.

Think this is great. Just do it! Style it out and get something that makes you feel like you want to wear it!!

Plainandsimple · 04/06/2017 20:36

Totally agree with all of the above, and just wanted to add that you'll burn more calories/tone up etc having fun in the water park than you will hiding under a sarong on a sun lounger! Go for it, concentrate on having fun with your DC's and forget about everything else!

Arealhumanbeing · 04/06/2017 20:42

Just to say. The t shirt was for the standing on stairs queuing part in the water park. Felt too naked and in the equivalent of underwear in that context.

Beach and pool? Seriously whatever you like!

OuchBollocks · 04/06/2017 20:43

Next have some wonderfully flattering swimwear at the moment, what about tankinis? These go up to a 20 on the bottom and are fitted by bra size on top

Oldraver · 04/06/2017 20:45

I bought a lovely blue spotty swimsuit with a skirt last year...as I don't like the top of my thighs. It looked lovely...however when you get out the water the flappy skirt fabric used to cling and felt uncomfortable. In a water park I where you are in and out it would really irritate I think..

Squishedstrawberry4 · 04/06/2017 20:49

I like these. Very flattering.

I am currently on holiday and size 18/20 and bought mine from M&S before I went - have even been on the waterslides in them and there were people larger than me- also some skinny but miserable looking girls , it's all about feeling good in what you wear and realising that everyone has hang ups about something. As I sad to my husband - it's not like I know anyone here - we've met 2 British couples, everyone else is either Russian, Turkish, Albanian, Spanish, etc etc

lazycrazyhazy · 04/06/2017 20:51

Absolutely. I find a sarong makes me more confident walking around. In size 16 but have wobbly thighs. In Italy I see very large ladies even in bikinis. I envy their sangfroid.

These are proper swimming costumes rather then beach wear costumes

DangerousBeanz · 04/06/2017 20:56

I'm a 16/18 (18 on top massive norks) I get a slazenger swim suit from sports direct with bit legs. It's very flattering and means I can go swimming with my daughter at a moments notice without worrying about the dreaded pant spider.

ChopinLisztFinder · 04/06/2017 21:03

I regret the years I spent worrying about my figure when I was bigger. I love water parks. What a waste!

George at Asda do swimming costumes up to a size 22. Here's a couple of their more fun ones. They also have more standard black ones if you're not feeling like a mermaid that day. They're good value, free returns, plus many of them have high backs that will protect you from friction burns on fast slides!

I forgot to say: to lose 1.5 stones, you need to undereat by 73,500 calories. You're an absolute badass for such an achievement. x

Toysaurus · 04/06/2017 21:06

I love the Slazenger long leg swim suits. Sometimes I wear a rash vest too. I get both brand new from eBay

Bizzysocks · 04/06/2017 21:10

it sounds like I have a similar figure. I have bought a m&s flowery costume, I can't link it but it has gathers across the front and was £29. I feel great in it compared to the plain black I usually wear. You should go on the slides.

Arealhumanbeing · 04/06/2017 21:13

sangfroid

Love that word.

GreenPetal94 · 04/06/2017 21:47

I'm a size 18 and I wear a bikini (abroad only!). I actually think covering up can just show that you feel fat. I just let my thighs look Ruebenesk. Bikinis are cooler.

Also you have dds. You need to show them that women of all sizes can have fun and swim and you don't need to define yourself by your dress size.

UsernameInvalid66 · 04/06/2017 22:35

If you don't feel comfortable wearing one, you don't have to wear one.

If you feel comfortable, don't let what anyone else might think stop you. It's unlikely that they will really be taking much notice of what anyone else looks like in a swimsuit, apart from those who are very self-conscious themselves, and are comparing themselves unfavourably with you and everyone else.

BorisTrumpsHair · 04/06/2017 22:42

Stop body shaming yourself and ignore any other fucker that might try to do it.

Find yourself a swim suit and get it there and have fun with your kids. Do you realise how few summer holidays you will actually have with them? They grow up so quickly. Don't let your thighs get in the way of your relationship with them and your holidays.

I'm size 20. I'm at the pools most weekends with my 2 having loads of fun.

Just do it. X

andpeggy29 · 04/06/2017 23:38

I'm a dress size 24, 40gg bra size, and I wear high waist bikinis!
