To think maybe I could wear a swimsuit?

Hi there, I'm a regular but name changed for this. I'm off on holidays to Italy with dh and two teen daughters. I'm currently a size 18/20 and
Very thigh heavy. I've lost 1.5 stone but it's a drop in the ocean. Inspired by a previous tread on here by someone going to Disneyland and worrying about what to wear, I've taken on-board some of the advice and got myself a pretty decent holiday wardrobe and most importantly comfy foot wear. I'm pretty pleased with what I've got and feeling happy with that side of it
However we're going to a campsite which has really decent water parks and activities. Dh wouldn't be bothered about any of that but my dds will and so would I if I weren't so heavy. I'd resigned myself to just lying beside the pool and not taking part but I think it'd be pretty unreasonable of me not to join in when my dds ask. So what I'm asking is, is can anyone recommend swim wear that looks ok on heavier women and also if I'm been unreasonable to think it's ok to reveal so much of myself to the unsuspecting public?

I would recommend a costume with good support for your bust.
I got my last one from Bravissimo.

Thank you all, I'm so grateful for the replies. I've never put much effort into my swim wear as I've always thought there'd be no point, even when I was a few sizes smaller. It's daft I know but yet when I'm on holidays I rarely see people as big as me, maybe though it's like you all have said I like everyone else am too wrapped up in myself too notice anyone else.
My dds won't care how I look but I know they will like me to join in with them and maybe I'll feel better if I look a bit better than I have in previous swimwear. I'm going to invest in a couple of bits. Ideally something which would cover some of my legs.
I'll have to order online, I'm very rural and local shops not offering much of a selection. I'm thinking maybe a swim dress and tankini with shorts once it doesn't look too odd covering some of my thighs?

Yes, you should, as other posters said people will be too busy enjoying themselves to notice what you're wearing. I am a size 18, I have swim dress that I love, a "miracle suit" swimming costume which was a great investment and very slimming but when I go to aquafit I wear swim leggings, which were a £10 bargain from Peacocks teamed with a longish tankini top. I have also seen a lot of people wearing rash vests teamed with bikini bottoms or shorts which is quite a cute look. There are lots of options out there, just try a few things out to see which makes you the most confident.

Modcloth (if you've got a little bit of time to wait for shipping) have some gorgeous ones

LadyPenelope68 · 04/06/2017 19:10

The Evans cosies are great, excellent quality and very supportive. The swim dresses are IMO much more flattering than a tankini and shorts.

Some more good options here > m.liligal.com/Plus-Size-Swimwear-vc-125-1.html. It's an American site though so delivery takes a while but I've ordered from them before and the quality was good.

Hi I have this one from decathlon. I am an 18/20 and have 3 of these - they are that good! Much nicer in real life actually and very supportive. Also the "pink" isn't pink at all, it's a lovely wine/burgundy. I'm generally in proportion with the exception of enormous hips so the very low leg is really flattering. Shorty type swimwear looks really bad on me. Enjoy your holiday Smile

Wear a swimsuit! My friend is bigger than you and she wears swimsuits and strappy tops.

People might give you a passing glance - but that's it.

Beautiful styles, but sizes can be unpredictable so I always get more than one to try:

Yes wear a swimsuit!
I was having this conversation with a work colleague and we both came to the conclusion that we don't take any notice of size whilst on holiday.
What I do tend to register is if I like someone's swimwear, it could be the style or colours.
I also notice if someone is heavily sunburnt.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/06/2017 19:27

My swimsuit is a 16/18. I'm taking it (I have two the same) to Greece this summer. I do feel self conscious but there are always people the same size or bigger and after a day or so I'm fine. I do tend to use a sarong though when going to the pool bar or something, it just makes me feel better.

Crumbs1 · 04/06/2017 19:28

Definitely wear a swimsuit. Your daughter will have much more fun if you are with her. She loves you and knows you are big. Other people don't really care and if they did? You'll probably never see them again. I've seen plenty of heavier women in swimwear. I wouldn't go bikini, but a nice swimming costume and a cover up for when sitting around. Please don't miss out on the fun for you both. Head high and enjoy the water.

sizeofalentil · 04/06/2017 19:29

1.5 stone isn't a drop in the ocean - it's a massive achievement! You should be proud of yourself.

And OF COURSE you can wear a swimsuit. I bet you'll look amazing in it too.

I always take a sarong or a kaftan to cover my arse when walking about, just to give me an extra confidence boost. Team with some lovely sunnies and a fancy sun hat (and red pedicure and a nice bag too…) and you'll look like a movie star.

sizeofalentil · 04/06/2017 19:30

Agree with PP about Modcloth. They did a thing about 'fatkinis' - big, beautiful women wearing swimsuits and they all looked gorgeous.

hippadoppaloppagorillapig · 04/06/2017 19:31

Why the hell wouldn't you wear a swimsuit! I know it's easier said than done, having been size 18 in the past, but no one will be looking at you, no one will cry and run away and you will get to go in the water with your family. Please OP don't let this ruin your holiday.

Witchend · 04/06/2017 19:34

I wear a swim.dress and I feel.much more confident in it. If you sit in a bubbly pool though it rises up with the bubbles which causes the dc endless laughter.

JeffVaderneedsatray · 04/06/2017 19:38

If I am swimming outside I wear knee length swimming shorts and a rash vet because a) I burn something terrible and b) I feel less 'exposed' and thus more comfortable.
If I am swimming in an inside pool I wear a long tankini top and little swim shorts.
Wear a swimsuit, join in and have fun.
I joined in with my children at an outdoor swimming lake last year and they loved it. I regret the years I didn't because I was worried about my size.

I am 18/20 and chunky of thigh! I have lost 4st 4lbs so far and will be off to Cyprus in 10 days. I will be wearing tankinis and some beach shorts from Simply Be.

Goingtobeawesome · 04/06/2017 19:42

Love that Love.

LockedOutOfMN · 04/06/2017 19:46

Wear a swimsuit, OP, if you want. Wear whatever you want, especially on holiday. Bikinis / two pieces are easier to change in and out of beside the pool etc and also for going to the loo.

Enjoy your holiday!

SinglePringle · 04/06/2017 19:55

Wear the swimsuit. Wear the bikini! Heck, go naked if appropriate!

I am an easy size 10-12 with boobs. Apparently a 'good figure' (I hate my stomach but appreciate I've good legs, shoulders, arms and arse). However, the hottest woman I ever saw on a beach was an easy size 20. At around 5'5.

She had it going on! Great (bright corals) bikini, gold / similarly toned open fronted kaftan, great ('done' but not too 'done') hair, sprinkling of gold jewellery (hoop earrings, slim necklace, single bangle etc), wedge espadrilles. Deep 'I wear a bikini year round and what of it?!' tan.

Along with her man, I could not take my eyes off her.

Give not a fuck about others attitudes. Dress to impress yourself.
