Listening to TM outside Downing Street vs JC - I think she may have just won the election - saying what people wnat to hear and hopefully some of what she says needs to be done will be followed through with.

Went to see Henning Wehn, the comedian, recently. He explained how he was, as a German, baffled by British willingness to give generously to charity but be unwilling to pay more tax to get better services.

cabumbo · 08/06/2017 17:19

Which public sector roles offer a final salary pension these days?! The NHS certainly don't.

And I'm sorry but you just don't understand payscales if you think it's a pay rise. It's a way of setting up wages so that you earn more as you gain experience, for bands 5 and above it is now performance related and not automatic.

I'm sorry things are so shit in your job but it's not a race to the bottom.

christinarossetti · 08/06/2017 17:38

Don't forget the endless restructuring that has gone on in the public sector. In addition to pay freezes, people have been 'regraded' which has meant a pay cut or no increase in real terms.

I don't think it was the nurse who was 'fibbing' in that exchange.

Sostenueto · 08/06/2017 17:40

Agree Christina.

Dandandandandandandan · 08/06/2017 17:42

What do you think happens in the private sector? You think there are no pay freezes? You think people don't get made redundant?

Bunnyfuller · 08/06/2017 17:44

In public services you don't go up in wages every year! You're in pay bands and once you reach the top of yours that's it! No bonuses, no perks, no way final salary OMFGGGGGGG we wish pensions. 1% since 2010. That's it. God the media has a lot to answer for.

cabumbo · 08/06/2017 17:48

So fucking depressing that this country places such low value on public servants, these people are saving your lives, educating your children, why do people hate them so much?

Charmageddon · 08/06/2017 18:00

There are plenty of public servants that were watching it in disbelief too btw.

She said:

"My wage slips from 2009 reflect exactly what I'm earning today"

Which can't possibly be true.

She's had a % increase every year since then, not including any increments she may have been entitled to, and also with increased personal tax allowance since then.

I agree that in real terms it's probably a decrease, but that's not what she said - she said that her wage slip in 2009 was the same as her wage slip in 2017.

PortiaCastis · 08/06/2017 18:01

I appreciate all the nurses doctors policemen firefighters and they should get rewarded properly for the work they do, after all where would we be without them

Tiredemma · 08/06/2017 18:02

Agenda for Change is currently under review again so I imagine that nurses will continue to get shafted in some way or another on the new pay structure.

Charmageddon · 08/06/2017 18:03

And armed forces too?

JC of course said

"Fight all the cuts. Except those in the armed forces, where we want to see a few more cuts taking place".

JustAnotherPoster00 · 08/06/2017 18:13

Glad to see youre still covering the threads liberally with the usual tiresome CCHQ crap

christinarossetti · 08/06/2017 18:26

Nurses and other public sector workers are using food banks.

It's not 'for complex reasons' as TM says. It's because they haven't got enough money to buy food.

This may be related to not taking money anymore money now than they did some years ago, despite the cost of living going up.

PigletJohn · 08/06/2017 18:27

Final Salary pension schemes?

Surely not. We're all in this together, right?

"My wage slips from 2009 reflect exactly what I'm earning today"

Actually it can. National Insurance contributions increased, and people paying into what used to be contracted out pension schemes had to pay a higher rate.

I earned less last year then the year before despite a £500 pay increase as I was on the bottom of my civil service payscale.

BeyondThePage · 08/06/2017 18:49

My hubby has been "marking time" for 9 years due to a "revaluation of skill sets" (an arbitrary decision to take away allowance for the best qualified/most experienced - tellingly - NO-ONE was "revalued" upwards) in the civil service.

His gross salary on his payslip has not changed in 9 years. But he keeps being reminded he is being paid more than he should be.

Makes him feel so valued.

7461Mary18 · 08/06/2017 19:21

Although his net salary has probable come down as the single person allowance has shot up! (Unless he earns so much he loses the single person allowance entirely)

Jux · 08/06/2017 19:26

I would like Public Servants to be treated as heroes in my society. They are the backbone of civilization: teachers, healthcare workers, sewage workers, street cleaners, where would we be without them?

They should be the high earners with the status.

BeyondThePage · 08/06/2017 19:31

Although his net salary has probable come down as the single person allowance has shot up! (Unless he earns so much he loses the single person allowance entirely)

haha - I wish - his net salary has varied - pension deductions (was previously non-contributory), less tax because of personal allowance, but more NI paid. So it is generally lower than 9 years ago.

Petronius16 · 08/06/2017 19:42

A friend of ours works for a Town Council. Two years ago it restructured. The only job available to her meant a 30% pay cut. Of course public sector workers could be earning less than a few years ago. Didn't some TA's go on strike in the North on that very issue?

Creampastry · 08/06/2017 20:07

I think labour was winning the election .... until all the conservative voters finished work at 5pm...

Giddyaunt18 · 08/06/2017 20:13

cream are you from the 1970s?

squoosh · 08/06/2017 20:17

Wait..........can it be? A Tory voter making a cheap dig at Labour voters? Surely not! Apparently that never ever happens on MN!

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.

TheElementsSong · 08/06/2017 20:19

I think you must have imagined it, squoosh Grin - you know that never happens!
