Listening to TM outside Downing Street vs JC - I think she may have just won the election - saying what people wnat to hear and hopefully some of what she says needs to be done will be followed through with.

Fair point Unapaloma but until the last few weeks he really wasn't any opposition even his own party were trying to get rid of him
All of a sudden he is the best thing since sliced bread

Badbadbunny · 05/06/2017 20:12

They could have more money if they put corporation tax back up.

Corporation tax revenue has been increasing with the CT rate reductions.

Almondbrew · 05/06/2017 20:12

Theresa may is still going on about building a stinger fairer Britain and that Berxit means we have loadsa new opportunities. Hmm

And of course strong and stable leadership haha.

Almondbrew · 05/06/2017 20:13

Watching her party speech from today and she is absolutely revolting.

Badbadbunny · 05/06/2017 20:13

You're right of course that she's not been PM that long... but she's been Home Secretary since May 2010, so national security has been her direct responsibility for just over 7 years in one way or another.

But her first 5 year stint was hamstrung by the libdems so she couldn't do what she wanted. She wanted to be tougher, but the libdems wanted things to be softer and more liberal, so it was more like 5 wasted years.

Dianella · 05/06/2017 20:17

Astonishing that anyone is gullible enough to believe anything May says. ThIis has all happened ON HER WATCH first as Home Secretary and now as PM. Why would you give her the benefit of the doubt? Add to this that if you vote Tory you are voting for the sell off of the NHS. Is that what you want?

Ontopofthesunset · 05/06/2017 20:18

Yes, but that is partly because the economy has been growing. In fact it decreased for a couple of years, levelled off for a couple of years and then increased. Absolute numbers aren't the whole story, as in education.

Livelovebehappy · 05/06/2017 20:22

Oakster; were you equally sickened when Corbyn also made a speech yesterday relating to the election campaign? Or did you agree with the hapless Emily Thornberry who tried to defend him during a Sky news interview today, when she said it was okay because he made his speech in the evening whilst Theresa May made here in the morning. So apparently that was okay then. It was amusing watching her struggling to explain that one. A Diane Abbott Mark II in the making I think.

TearsOnTheGround · 05/06/2017 20:23

The serious question is; Can you realistically see JC running the country (and I don't mean voting for his party as some sort of protest vote against TM.)

TearsOnTheGround · 05/06/2017 20:25

Dianne Abotte in ANY position of change and power scares me the most. He previous racist remarks just wouldn't be tolerated if they were the other way around!

Evewasinnocent · 05/06/2017 20:26

Yes Tears I can - and more competently than TM (which doesn't say a lot!). Not a JC fan - but will be voting for him more firmly now (am ex law enforcement and TM has been a disaster for security Imo!)

nina2b · 05/06/2017 20:28

OP:
Her name is Theresa. Maybe someone else has drawn your attention to it, already...

Ontopofthesunset · 05/06/2017 20:33

I really am not a JC fan, as I keep saying, but I think he might well be a better negotiator - he seems to have some empathy and sounds like a reasonably normal human being. She seems to think that being called a 'bloody difficult woman' is some kind of badge of honour.

TearsOnTheGround · 05/06/2017 20:33

Personally I'll be voting for my local MP as JC isn't in my constituency...

desertmum · 05/06/2017 20:35

omg I have stopped reading all the posts - I didn't say I WANTED her elected, I just wondered if the speech would change people's mind and so would vote for her, or if those who were dithering would vote conservative after a speech that was rallying. Obviously all you intelligent, well read MNers won't be swayed by her speech, but I do think that many people watching her could possibly vote for her.
I also don't think that asking the question was nasty, unpleasant or rude. It was just a question that I might have asked a mate in a pub.

Tears on the ground

There is, I hear quite a strong movement to "Yes" for Corbyn.

Since Theresa had the lunatic idea to call an election, and the big media companies (but not the newspapers) have been forced to give equal billing to JC and TM, it has been increasingly apparent which of them is the better bet. You can see the results in the approval ratings.

Trying to base her campaign on attacking Jeremy as pro-terrorist has backfired on her. Refusing to have open debate has backfired on her. Repeatedly being caught out lying shamelessly has backfired on her. Being the former Home Secretary who cut Police budgets has backfired on her.

Trying to run a Personality campaign when you haven't got a personality was a bad move. Is it really possible that nobody told her? Maybe she doesn't listen to criticism and advice.

Ontopofthesunset · 05/06/2017 20:41

I think it's just a shame that people want to hear so little, if your supposition about the speech is true. Not really a shame, more a terrible indictment of our critical thinking skills.

I've received boring and terrible bumf from all the parties, but the most patronising is from the Conservatives. We had a dreadful fake magazine that looked like one of those little Woman & Home type mags with shocking pink mastheads. In case that didn't work, they've now sent a ridiculous 'peel and reveal' flyer today where, surprise surprise, voting for Theresa gives us Strong And Stable Brexit Happyland, and voting for everyone else gives us the Coalition of Chaos!

LouiseBrooks · 05/06/2017 20:42

My previous job was unpaid sick leave until day 3 of sickness then that was statutory sick pay not full pay rate sick pay! I couldn't believe it

Tears I've worked in both, 12 years in the public sector, 27 in the private. Other than one job I had for a year, my sick pay in both was identical. It depends on the company and the job, not whether it's public or private. I had six months off after an accident and was on full pay with my current employer, which is a private company. Other than pension my benefits are better than in the public sector as I get a bonus.

And yes I can see JC as being much better than TM. She's useless.

Ontopofthesunset · 05/06/2017 20:43

I mean, everything they say may be true and TM may be the best person to lead negotiations with Brussels but their presentation of their case is simply shocking and unbelievable.

LouiseBrooks · 05/06/2017 20:44

Pigletjohn absolutely. She has shot herself in the foot, even if she wins (and I do think she will.)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/06/2017 20:48

I see Corbyn was back to his usual petulant self tonight with Michael Crick on Channel 4 news. Dianne Abbot was her usual dreadful self.

neveradullmoment99 · 05/06/2017 20:53

Win the election - I hope not. She has given us nothing but lies and U turns. Just cannot believe she and her government could be voted back in.

Thank god I am in scotland and at the very least we are devolved.

Craigie · 05/06/2017 20:55

Funny, coz I think exactly the opposite. I think Theresa May is proving to be a very poor Prime Minister, and her deficits as Home Secretary are now obvious. Weak. Her response to Donald Trump's hateful tweets has been woeful. Both our major political parties need new leaders pronto, because IMO, neither of them are up to the job.
