I was about to make a bacon sandwich the bacon looks perfectly fine but has a use by date of 31st May- would you risk it?

Smell it

sooperdooper · 03/06/2017 11:25

I would, its very easy to tell if bacon has gone off or not - as long as it hasn't got that shiney metallic looking film on it I'd eat it

Mamabear14 · 03/06/2017 11:25

If it's unopened then maybe. Well DP would. I wouldn't!

DioneTheDiabolist · 03/06/2017 11:26

I would.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/06/2017 11:27

What sooper says. That, and if it's green. Then don't eat it.

Schleeping · 03/06/2017 11:27

Can't smell anything untoward...

I'd definitely eat it. If you're at all worried just make sure it's really well cooked.

Most use by dates are in date by a few days as a safety precaution. My DH would have me believe by up to a week as he hates food wastage. I draw the line at 3 days.

namechange20050 · 03/06/2017 11:31

It's cured so it's likely to be fine. Smell it, look at it. If all ok; tuck in!

DonaldStott · 03/06/2017 11:32

I would if it hadn't been opened

Busybusybust · 03/06/2017 11:44

The reason it's called bacon and not pork is because the process of making it into bacon is to preserve it. So it's going to last quite a lot longer than the sell by date. Eat it and enjoy!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/06/2017 11:52

Smell it. If it looks and smells fine it is fine.

I agree with your husband and for many things I would go further than a week.

smithin · 03/06/2017 11:55

I used to do that with grilled meat till one time that I broke out in terrible itching blisters. I stayed in a bath for the most of that day because the itching was driving me nuts. I'm more careful with food now. Chance of something happening when it still smells right is pretty slim, but when it does go wrong it's not fun.

icy121 · 03/06/2017 11:59

Even if it has been opened tbh.... If it's still pink & doesn't smell you're fine.

GinGeum · 03/06/2017 12:04

I've been eating a few bits each day from a pack of bacon with the 31st date on for the last few days and I'm still alive!

Schleeping · 03/06/2017 12:49

I've eaten it! Cooked it very well so hopefully it will be ok

Just make sure you come back and confirm for us if you live to tell the tale! Grin

MirandaWest · 03/06/2017 13:46

I'm pretty sure it will be fine

SauvignonBlanche · 03/06/2017 13:50

I made pasta with bacon the had a use by date of 22/05/17 last night and I'm still alive and well.

Tazerface · 03/06/2017 14:00

It's only 3 June. I wouldn't have even considered not.
