Hi lovely MNetters! 💋

Posting in AIBU for traffic.

On Sunday I'm leaving in Rome... alone. Was supposed to leave with a friend however, due to severe family problems, can't come anymore.... so it's me myself and I. First I was pissed (obviously on the situation-not her), now I find it as a "finding myself journey) after a very rough and emotionally challenging year.......

What did you visit/buy/eat in Rome and loved it? Please give me some advice;

On my list I have- Jo Malone shops (we don't have them in the country I live now)
-Kiko & PUPA cosmetics
-zara temple (lol)

Visiting- Colosseum
-vatican
_fontana di trevi
-st peter's basilica

Please help!:-)

Take the elevator 'ascensori panoramici' to the top of the Vittoriano monument. It is an amazing view of all of Rome. You can see across the colosseum and right over to St Peters Basilica.

I would also recommend the Vatican museums. This was amazing. Best to book online for the museums if you have a chance before you go to avoid the queues.

Also don't be scared to take the underground it is really easy and you can buy an unlimited travel ticket for either 24 or 48 hours. Most tabac's sell them or alot of stations have ticket machines.

Nothing to recommend. My mum is going twice in the next few months. I just wanted to wish you a lovely holiday!

Rachel0Greep · 02/06/2017 15:41

Bring good walking shoes - one of the best recommendations I received when travelling to Rome years ago. You walk a lot without realising it.
Have a lovely holiday.

KC225 · 02/06/2017 15:46

Of you are a bit nervous of wandering round alone have you thought of booking a day city tour via your hotel.

Piazza Navona and surrounding areas was great for cafes, restaurants. It's nice to eat outside if you are on your own, less formal and great for people watching.

requestingsunshine · 02/06/2017 15:47

Yes! definitely good shoes. We went for a weekend and walked an average of 20km a day! Have fun

Dirtylookineejit · 02/06/2017 15:52

The Vatican museums are incredible, I've been to Rome three times and visited each time. St Peter's is amazing. Enjoy the people watching, but don't go for dinner too early they all eat late and the atmosphere will be much better later. The old forum is fascinating as is the Colosseum. Enjoy.

AnathemaPulsifer · 02/06/2017 15:53

Wander round Trastevere in the evening. I went alone to Rome a few years ago and had a great time. Free walking tours are good anywhere - tip whatever you feel appropriate.

BlondeB83 · 02/06/2017 15:54

Visit the forum - amazing!

RJnomore1 · 02/06/2017 15:56

Wonderful little place to eat called pane e salami very close to the Trevor fountain - google it - you may need to queue for a table.

Longdistance · 02/06/2017 15:59

Spanish steps
Pantheon is also worth a visit

Floisme · 02/06/2017 16:00

We went with a Romans crazy 9 year-old so spent loads of time at the forum, the baths... all the roman stuff really. We went to the Colosseum three times Grin I didn't mind as it was fascinating.

Trastevere is a really nice neighbourhood for restaurants and just hanging out. The best meal deals are often at lunch time, which can also get you out of the sun for a couple of hours.

If you want to get out of the city, Ostia Antica is an amazingly preserved roman town and, in some ways, the highlight of the trip.

Eatingcheeseontoast · 02/06/2017 16:05

Villa Borghese but you have to book on line in advance - lovely uncrowded art gallery. The park around it is a great cool escape too.

Take comfy shoes. And a book so you can sit in pavement cafes and surreptiously watch the world go by. Eat ice cream!

ProseccoBitch · 02/06/2017 16:09

Be prepared for the street sellers - they are really persistent. There are loads of them outside the Colloseum etc. I've been but my memory is just rubbish and I can't remember many specifics.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 02/06/2017 16:27

I've been to Rome on my own and had a fantastic time.

If you like tiramisu you must go to Pompi's - had that in lieu of a proper dinner once.

I love the Castel Sant'Angelo - on the Tiber at the end of the road leading from St Peter's. There's also the old Roman Forum right by the Colisseum which will take a day to look round.

The tourist buses are great for seeing the city, but do study a map - the buses can make places seem much further apart than they actually are.

Make sure you go for a wander down some side streets, you can find some fascinating shops hidden away.

Have a wonderful time! Am completely jealous!!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 16:30

If you can find one, there used to be a little book you could buy with the ruins as a photo and a cellophane over-sheet with the original building painted. We spent hours trying to find exactly where the pictures were taken from and holding up the clear sheet to see the Roman original.

Eat, walk, eat some more. Don't get ripped off, it's a bugger for that!

Any Italian phrases you need?

travelingthew0rldbeforeim40 · 02/06/2017 16:51

Omg!!! So many lovely people out here! You even taken into account I'll be alone! Thanks everyone!

Fortunately I speak 6 languages & Italian is one of them! Hahahaha! :-)

So excited now! Wrote everything down on my diary! Thank you all!

I went to Rome alone for my hen weekend away and yes definitely be very careful with street vendors. I was grabbed by my wrist because when I tried walking away!

Nothing to recommend as it was 4 years ago and I can't even remember what I had for dinner last week!

I do remember an amazing gelateria near piazza navona and amazing carbonara and aglio olio in Trastevere, near basilica di Santa Maria

Have fun! You'd love it!

Crispbutty · 02/06/2017 17:16

Do not accept a rose from anyone at the Spanish steps. They are trying to rip you off.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 17:16

Parliamo Italiano allora!

fruityb · 02/06/2017 17:21

Eat off the beaten track at street cafes with locals. We ate at one in view of the colosseum but was full of Italian locals and it was the best food in terms of rustic Italian stuff and so blooming cheap! I'd hunt it out again if we were to go. It's an amazing city and I am very jealous!

Mama1980 · 02/06/2017 17:22

We've not been long back from Rome.
The Pantheon, is lovely and free if you go just back for the the main square the restaurants are lovely and much cheaper. The garlic ciabatta is amazing!
The baths of Caracalla are huge and fabulous, lovely stroll in the park to get there.
The via Cavour, has lots of shops, clothes, toiletries, perfume etc. It's straight ahead of the Italian national monument mentioned up thread.

squoosh · 02/06/2017 17:23

Eat some tartufo.

Visit the pantheon.

squoosh · 02/06/2017 17:24

And there's a great restaurant just off the Pantheon square called Armandos.
