Hi lovely MNetters! 💋

Posting in AIBU for traffic.

On Sunday I'm leaving in Rome... alone. Was supposed to leave with a friend however, due to severe family problems, can't come anymore.... so it's me myself and I. First I was pissed (obviously on the situation-not her), now I find it as a "finding myself journey) after a very rough and emotionally challenging year.......

What did you visit/buy/eat in Rome and loved it? Please give me some advice;

On my list I have- Jo Malone shops (we don't have them in the country I live now)
-Kiko & PUPA cosmetics
-zara temple (lol)

Visiting- Colosseum
-vatican
_fontana di trevi
-st peter's basilica

Please help!:-)

Bernini's sculpture The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa - incredible.

Can't remember the name of the church it's in but it's well worth a look.

There was just us in there when we went!

squoosh · 02/06/2017 17:33

Yes! it's in the Santa Maria della Vittoria. Very sexy religious sculpture.

ParadiseCity · 02/06/2017 17:38

Go to Le Tavernelle to eat. It's the kind of place where you don't feel odd on your own. Take 50 billion photos because it's all beautiful. I was tempted to do a segway tour but they were 70 euro and most of rome is cobbled so I'm not sure where they actually see. Rome is gorgeous, I am sure you will love it.

travelingthew0rldbeforeim40 · 02/06/2017 20:41

You people made my day. I wrote down all new suggestions as well. I wish I could take you all with me to go to all the above mentioned places! ❤

You bunch of amazing people! Thank you! Now I'm sure I'll have a lovely time and the personal safety tips are fab! Thank you!!!!!

Oh thank you squoosh!

It's supposed to be St Theresa having a vision - looks rather like something else entirely😃😃

But, an absolutely stunning piece of work - how did he do it??

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2017 21:03

The Medici Chapel(s?) are also great - lots of rooms full of reliquaries that contain things like saints jawbones and stuff.

Fascinating.

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2017 21:04

Ooh - actually, maybe the Medici Chapels are in Florence!?!? Blush.

If that's true I'm terribly sorry - and embarrassed! Shock

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2017 21:06

I should explain - we did two Italian holidays in consecutive years; one Rome and one Florence.

I think I mixed them up!

Libitina · 02/06/2017 21:06

Be aware of pick pockets and beggars.

Eat icecream, eat street pizza, drink coffe. Just people watch.

Enjoy!

Itsokaytobeshy · 02/06/2017 21:08

Rome is a fabulous city to visit alone! We went a few years ago as a family and tbh I am envious of you - so much to see and you take as much time as you like with no whining from anyone Smile.

travelingthew0rldbeforeim40 · 02/06/2017 21:11

@Itsokaytobeshy how about I take you with me? No whining, I promise! 😂😂😂

PS: this is completely unrelated but somehow related.... so: I quite feel awkward being alone. How do you manage to enjoy yourself/what do you do?/ do you get bored? How do you manage to make yourself a good company? It's a life lesson, isn't it?

Excellent gelati near the Trevi fountain!

RJnomore1 · 02/06/2017 21:22

Is that the one to the right and down a bit, on the left side of the street foxy? If so it's amazing and I've never known anyone with as much knowledge or passion about ice cream as the man in there!

allegretto · 02/06/2017 21:24

Don't eat tartufo - it's the wrong season - eat everything else. Rome food is wonderful.

I have been to Rome a lot, sometimes on my own and sometimes not. Once you embrace it, it really is lovely to travel on your own and not have to put up with doing what someone else wants to do!

allegretto · 02/06/2017 21:26

Also, lots of tips on this thread:

travelingthew0rldbeforeim40 · 02/06/2017 21:31

Thanking you!

I guess I'm not too used on being on my own, though when I am, I enjoy it. However as it's been a rough year I kind of isolated myself and getting used to enjoy my company. I found out that I'm actually pleasant...

Also Trastevere for amazing food!

Maremaremare · 02/06/2017 21:42

You must must must go to Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum! It is the old ruins of the business district and civic centre of the Roman empire, so impressive and beautiful.

Firstly, go to the Colosseum and pay to join one of the tour groups that does a guided tour of the Colosseum and then the Forum/Palatine afterwards. My tour had about a 40 min break in between visiting the two sites which was great to get a gelato/drink and have a little rest before heading into the Forum/Palatine.

I really recommend doing a guided tour as it just brings it all to life. There are many people offering tours outside the Colosseum so just speak to a few people and maybe try to bargain down the price a little bit.

Have an amazing time!

Palomb · 02/06/2017 21:43

We went to the Baths of Caracalla which is a bit of a walk from the colosseum but much quieter. It really gave us a chance to take in the scale of it all away from the billion other tourists.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 23:43

Pretend you're a travel writer! Wander around thinking, when I write my book about Rome... it works!

verite · 03/06/2017 00:10

Forum and Pantheon are great to visit. But you must take time to just sit in the big squares (such as piazza navona) and have coffee and cake/ice cream and people watch. I love Rome - it's my fave city.

grumpysquash3 · 03/06/2017 00:20

I was in Rome last weekend with my DD.
Vatican and St Peter's Basilica - yes - book online for Vatican
Colosseum and Palatine Hill (Ancient Rome) - a must - would recommend booking or get there at 9am.
Rome is quite small and easy to get around on foot. It's not seedy or dangerous. There are tons of pretty streets, squares with fountains, churches etc.
Make sure you eat lots of gelato, it comes in so many flavours. There are about 20 shops by the Trevi fountain.
Have a great time!

MiddleClassProblem · 03/06/2017 00:29

Not sure if it's been said but just in case if visiting the Vatican and wanting to go in wear long sleeves and trousers (a long skirt might be ok but check) x

Twofurrycats · 03/06/2017 00:29

If you have time to go out of Rome I recommend (really highly) ancient Ostia. We did it and it was great. It is still in the metro zone so one ticket will do the metro to the correct train station ( can not remember the name) and the train. Short walk cheap to get in loads of ruins and when I went very very quiet compared to Rome😁

AngeloMysterioso · 03/06/2017 00:48

Check out Ristorante Baccano- lovely oysters!

There are some lovely little bars and stalls on the riverbank that are worth a look at

There's a little wine bar in Trastevere called Vin Allegro, you can get some really lovely wines by the glass for a decent price
