To be scared of Labours Land tax

Dragongirl10 · 01/06/2017 15:11

Just read about this, Labour are proposing a Land Value Tax on any land owned, could cost thousands a year for anyone even with a small house, not just the rich....they have not publicised this at all.

People with modest homes could be forced to sell or go into debt, or be repossessed...

@tiggytape, your scenario is entirely based on what if's.

A Labour govt may increase or decrease council tax, or they may leave it the same.

A Tory govt may increase or decrease council tax, or they may leave it the same.

That's as much as we know. Anything else is conjecture.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/06/2017 13:13

Theresa hasn't proposed an annual bicycle registration tax.

She hasnt said she isnt either piglet

Will it be based on how much value my bicycle has or on its purchase price, why wont she be clearer on this, I wont be able to afford this,
I'm already struggling right now Hmm

PigletJohn · 04/06/2017 13:26

It might be £1,000 per cycle per year, or it might be an ad valorem tax based on the total purchase price of your bicycle, accessories, special clamping shoes, waterproofs, lights and special clothes. Fluorescent lycra to be charged double.

Nobody knows which of these options would be worst, so choose the one that costs you most.

*It isn't a definite proposal but equally it isn't a tax plucked out of thin air and unfairly attributed ot Labour.

Labour specifically mention land value tax as a possibility in their manfesto. Given that lvt definition is more burdensome for some areas of the country than others, it is natural that people will worry about it being included for consideration in a manifesto if they live in an area that would be most harshly affected by such a tax.

It isn't some made up tax plucked out of thin air. It is written into the manifesto as being under consideration. It is therefore a being considered as a possibility to be implemented - else why mention it at all? Why did Labour not just "we will review council tax systems" and leave it at that? They give one specific example of what they will do instead and that's lvt.*

They give an example of what they may do. You seem to be criticising them for actually bothering to put forward ideas rather than meaningless sound bites?

What does the Conservative manifesto say about council tax?

PigletJohn · 04/06/2017 15:01

tiggytape

how many column-inches could the tory marketing department get from saying the truth "labour say they will review local authority funding?"

And how much free advertising have they obtained by planting false stories about a tax that is not labour policy, at a percentage that is not labour policy, in a charging pattern that is not labour policy?

Are you one of those people who think it's fair that old people who hardly ever use their bikes may have to pay as much as half their pension on Theresa's new tax?

Increasinglymiddleaged · 04/06/2017 15:18

But isn't wealth just taxed income you haven't spent?

Not necessarily

It can be:
A. Property wealth
B. Inherited wealth that is below the IHT threshold
C. Inherited wealth that has been whacked into a 'company' or avoided IHT in another way.

It's interesting because I agree that high incomes are taxed enough already. Because I'm not even a 'lefty' but a floater although I am going to vote labour this time TBF.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 04/06/2017 15:18

And I'm putting in a false wall to hide my bikes Grin

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 04/06/2017 15:46

Too late increasingly

They are monitering the internet as we speak

They already know

Mwah, ha, ha

Increasinglymiddleaged · 04/06/2017 16:28

Shite we've got 7 of the damn things not including scooters I'm going to have to emigrate Angry

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/06/2017 16:46

Its going to force us moderate bike owners to emigrate to a more bicycle friendly country, I think this is disgusting at least JC understands the fear we have of Treeza's bike tax

We do know Corbyn is planning on spending eye watering amounts of money. And we know the tax he is planning to raise isn't going to cover it so they will have to raise a lot more tax somewhere else sounds like LVT is in their sights.

PigletJohn · 04/06/2017 17:16

sounds to you perhaps

Have you actually read their Labour manifesto? Did you know that unlike the Conservative manifest it includes pages of financial figures? The Conservative manifesto doesn't tell you what they hope will happen. perhaps they believe in Cameron's Magic Money Tree (his was in Panama, by the way).

Dandandandandandandan · 04/06/2017 17:28

Pages of financial figures that just don't add up.

V v worrying. The only thing that is even more worrying than his maths is the thought of the ghastly Diane Abbott in any position other than a cushty safe labour seat!

Bombardier25966 · 04/06/2017 17:29

We do know Corbyn is planning on spending eye watering amounts of money.

Whereas we don't have the first idea what May is going to do!

What funding do the Tory plans require, what are their plans on taxation? They couldn't seem to agree between themselves about income tax yesterday. Five days before the election and their plan is ... well, what?

Increasinglymiddleaged · 04/06/2017 17:31

But then lego Teresa is intending to continue cutting education to the bone. We won't have a high skilled workforce (and a decent economy) in the future without being prepared to invest in Skills. So those sums don't add up to me either.

PigletJohn · 04/06/2017 17:40

Dandandandandandandan

I'm very interested to hear that you have had your calculator out and checked the arithmetic.

What was the error that you found when you checked lifelong learning, for example?

Please explain, in 100 words or fewer, why you think that a manifesto with costings is not as good as a manifesto without costings.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 04/06/2017 17:43

I dont get it

Not a labour supporter, I usually vote tory

But

People are unhappy at the thought of voting for labour because of the tax hike...which they have been open about

Yeah...have i got that right?

But they are happy to vote for a party that is refusing to tell anyone what the taxes rises will be

Thats right...yeah?

So if someone is voting purely for tax reasons (unlikely i know) why the fuck would they vote tory

And if you want to have a go at labours policies...why pick tax?

Bombardier25966 · 04/06/2017 17:52

@Rufus, not even that. All the manifesto says is that they are going to review council tax, and land value tax is one option that could be considered. The Conservatives spun that into "your council tax is going to treble".

Struggling to understand how anyone could vote Tory with a campaign based on lies, but clearly that is your choice.

PigletJohn · 04/06/2017 18:02

got form for it

Interviewer: "Is it true?"
May: "Yes, it was a case that was reported"
(followed by clip of May making a speech built out of Daily Mail gossip)

"I am not making this up." Well, it turns out she was making it up.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 04/06/2017 18:06

I am not voting tory bombardiar

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 04/06/2017 18:10

bombardiar

And labour have been open about raising tax on incomes over 80k

I wasnt even referring to the land tax...which i agree has just been mentioned as an example

WalkingOnLeg0 · 04/06/2017 18:10

Did you know that unlike the Conservative manifest it includes pages of financial figures? - But where do these figures come from? A child could have worked them out. Its like Corbyn will wave his magic wand and every person and company in the country will line up outside the tax office saying here is some more money, take as much as you want. There is consequences and they are being ignored.

Tories dont need detailed figures because they are not planning on buying the national grid, the post office, the water companies, the train companies, the north pole and an end to all tuition fees in the past present and future..... the list is endless.
