To think that the BBC are showing a clear labour bias?

I am basing this mostly on their news webpage. Over the last two weeks Corbyn has been smiling, looking benevolent, or standing at a podium on the BBC news home page nearly every day. Each time the headline has been pretty positive 'labour announce that' type thing. In contrast, May has been almost completely absent and Tory headlines have been negative 'Tories shown to be wrong'. I noticed this a few weeks ago so have been screen shot-ting a couple of times a day for the last two weeks (yes a bit mad I know). I have noticed a similar trend with the Radio 4 headlines though haven't been able to check that one. The question time audience last week was unquestionably partisan.

I did wonder if the Tories had hidden May or just decided not to bother campaigning but even then I thought the BBC were meant to be impartial?

They are biased to the right if anything, especially Kuenssberg. So YABU.

BusyBeez99 · 01/06/2017 05:23

The BBC in general are very left wing (I hate watching it over the years) so not sure why many of you perceive as right wing.

zen1 · 01/06/2017 05:33

Ive always thought that Nick Robinson and Laura Kuenssberg show a distinct right-wing bias. Even when Corbyn was interviewed on The One Show, he was treated with a completely different attitude (less respectfully, I thought) than when they had May on there.

thinkiamgoingcrazy · 01/06/2017 05:37

You'll be taken aback because when it wasn't the law Corbyn was ridiculed and ignored.

^ this

thinkiamgoingcrazy · 01/06/2017 05:38

And Kuenssberg is definitely, obviously and sneeringly anti-Corbyn.

blaeberry · 01/06/2017 06:50

I would agree that Corbyn had been poorly represented prior to the campaign but he also didn't engage with the media and that in itself had been an issue for me. A potential PM needs to be able to engage with the media. But I am not mistaken over his presence on the BBC news website vs Mays since the election started - I have screenshots Wink. Where are the Tories? Are they not campaigning or are they just not being reported? Where is May? I heard their initial plan was people didn't like Corbyn so just let him talk but they should have realised they needed to change that tactic by now! Corbyn is blatantly buying votes left, right and centre - why have they not got a strategy to counteract that? Labour tax and spend is hardly new.

Also, are we voting for a president?!?

I just don't think even the BBC can put a positive spin on the Tories car crash of a campaign.

disastrouslee · 01/06/2017 06:59

Eh? Do you watch your telly with the sound up? The tory bias on the BBC is shameless. They dont even try to be balanced any more.

LurkingHusband · 01/06/2017 06:59

Where is May?

Hiding ?

treaclesoda · 01/06/2017 07:00

I don't much like Jeremy Corbyn but I think the pro Tory stance of the BBC is fairly blatant. In general, not just the news reports. Eg those programmes they do in the morning about benefits cheats.

treaclesoda · 01/06/2017 07:01

Where is May?

Well, I understand she was invited to a debate but declined to attend...

blaeberry · 01/06/2017 07:01

I can't see the lib dems anywhere....

blankpieceofpaper · 01/06/2017 07:05

The Tory bias is very clear! It's even filtered through to comedy as well as news!

youarenotkiddingme · 01/06/2017 07:07

I've always felt the BBC are biased towards the Tories.

Someone told me it's because they are funded through them somehow?

peukpokicuzo · 01/06/2017 07:08

I recall some sociology research that in a mixed-sex group males tend to think that males and females are contributing equally if the females are speaking 15% of the time, and perceive that females are dominating the conversation if they are speaking more than 30% of the time.

I haven't seen equivalent research for political coverage but I would bet good money that it would show a similar effect. People who support a particular party will start to claim that a media source is biased against their party if some objective measure of actual bias isn't actually heavily weighted in favour of the views they personally ascribe to.

blaeberry · 01/06/2017 07:09

disastrous tbf I haven't been watching the TV much - I am fed up with all the electioneering Grin. Hence my observations coming from the website and headlines. But then, I am not alone in only looking at headlines and pictures. (I have also read the manifestos).

blankpieceofpaper · 01/06/2017 07:11

The BBC have been profiling all of the political leaders / party background stuff recently. For example:

Who is Theresa May? A profile of the Conservative leader
BBC News-21 May 2017

Tim Farron:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39859182
24 May 2017

Leanne Wood:
Who is Leanne Wood? A profile of the Plaid Cymru leader
BBC News-28 May 2017

The dates show how they are organising their coverage - but the parties are being featured somewhere.

MaisyPops · 01/06/2017 07:13

I wouldn't say it is.

Radio 4 news seems to be starting most sections by repeating that Theresa May is strong and stable and that she thinks she's the best person for Brexit and then repeating her attacks on Corbyn. When they come to Corbyn they never seem to our give air time to his policies or successes.

There's been very little made about Theresa May not turning up in my opinion.

I think the BBC are more neutral and people are getting annoyed that at the debate Corbyn came off well.

It's the printed press that I have an issue with. They aren't bound by the same rules during an election as TV. They are almost exclusively chatting nonsense about corbyn including fake claims from the Labour manifesto.

Personally, the Tories were happy when the press were slating Corbyn and making stuff up. But now people are starting to do policy over personality they're quite annoyed and want to have a strop.

(Should add, I'm labour but not Corbyn's biggest fan)

blaeberry · 01/06/2017 07:14

peuk that is why I started taking screenshots. But looking back through them, May is hardly to be seen whereas Corbyn is on nearly every one.

The BBC are screamingly pro Tory. The first ten minutes of the news the other night were like a party political broadcast for them. Corbyn forgets a number; wall to wall coverage. Hammond gets the cost of HS2 (I think) wrong by £20bn and nada.

They didn't use to be this craven. I suspect it's because they are scared of the Tories removing the licence fee and making them like any other commercial channel; it's been threatened in the past and now they toe the line.

And agree we have the most right wing media in Europe. Who care about nothing except protecting their own interests. The Mail is an absolute cancer.

TheMonkeyAndThePlywoodViolin · 01/06/2017 07:15

LoL.good joke OP

blankpieceofpaper · 01/06/2017 07:22

Partly, the BBC have been brought into line by the Tories. Does no one remember the cuts and reforms? It's why we have lost BBC Traffic and the recipes section might change etc.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 01/06/2017 07:23

Well from the pov of the audience JC was there, TM didn't bother to turn up and address the plebs on the other hand. This surely leads somewhat to its own bias.

The arrogance that you can come up with a tough manifesto because you believe that you can't lose. And not even be prepared to stand in front of the people Hmm

Everytimeref · 01/06/2017 07:24

The amount of time and coverage each party gets on Television and radio is strictly monitored during election campaign according to the previous election results so Corbyn has to have a certain amount of coverage so it may suddenly feel that he is getting more coverage because at other times he won't necessarily get into the news.
You won't see much of Farron because proportional he is entitled to much coverge due to low votes last election. That why Ukip get more time.

wictional · 01/06/2017 07:25

Sorry have you listened to/watched Laura Kuensburg at any point during this campaign??? She's the BBC's political editor and is so unbelievably biased towards the Tories I can no longer watch her reports.

This. The BBC has been so biased against Labour; it's obvious! However, they are likely to have reported on JC at the debate because he actually showed up to deal with his responsibilities as a party leader.
