To be considering voting Tory to make them accountable for Brexit

Bearbehind · 31/05/2017 11:17

I'm an ardent Remainer albeit a life long Tory voter and, when the GE was called I was adamant I wouldn't vote to endorse TMs plans.

Given Corbyns complete failure to acknowledge Brexit I don't want to vote for him (even though he is coming out of this campaign far better than TM).

But even if I didn't think that, it seems to me Labour winning would be the worst situation because, when the realisation that we can't have our cake and eat it hits with regard to the Brexit negotiations, it will be blamed on Labour not being 'strong and stable'.

I'm now thinking a vote to make the Tories accountable might not be such a bad thing?

There's always been immigration Mike.

And emigration.

ilovesooty · 31/05/2017 17:58

Vote for who you want. This is getting tiresome.

Bearbehind · 31/05/2017 17:59

killdora why do you think I'd be cutting my nose off to spite my face?

It's not the choice I'd like but there is an argument that it's the least worst option.

The Labour manifesto assumes blithely that the high earners and the companies will hang around to be taxed

Whereas you assume that they will leave. You assume that these tax rises will make their tax bill higher here than it would be anywhere else. You assume that they can simply relocate their families and get an equally well paid job and slide into another life abroad. Some may do, but for most that would be akin top selling your house and moving across country because your local Tesco has put 5p on a pint of milk.

MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2017 19:03

I have no objection to immigration or emigration but I do get annoyed by constantly hearing how Britain would grind to a halt without the migrant workers.

MayhemAndRudderless · 31/05/2017 19:08

What is the point of your post, op?

Are you from ToryHQ?

Killdora · 31/05/2017 19:16

Because, even though you were against brexit you'd be voting for a party that:

A) Is stating they will happily walk away with no deal at all, a financial catastrophe that will certainly fuck everyone over.

B) Thinks the best way to kick of negotiations is to antagonise and threaten the eu. We all know how that's going to end don't we?

C) Won't guarantee the rights of eu nationals going into the negotiations.

D) Has a leader that can't win a debate against an opponent she sees every week. She's too scared to even go into a proper head to head without the restrictions of priministers questions. The eu will take one look at her and piss themselves laughing.

Vs any other party.

Even if you don't like Corbin at least he is saying tariff free access is vital and that he will guarantee the rights of eu nationals.

I know people are being optimistic but unless you are in a lib dem stronghold is there one? a vote for them is basically handing it to the tories anyway.

I just can't see how anyone that voted remain could vote Tory, it's ridiculous.

Bearbehind · 31/05/2017 19:19

No, I'm definitely not from ToryHQ!

Having looked at the yougov poll for my area, voting labour might not actually be as pointless as it appeared.

I don't fully align myself with any of the party manifestos; it is just about damage limitation for me.

TM coming out of this with a far reduced majority, even losing is looking very appealing right now.

Let's see how JC does tonight.

40 years ago, the UK had a huge manufacturing base which has largely disappeared. There wasn't the plethora of coffee shops, restaurants, fast food outlets and Premier Inns that there are now. Those businesses are massively reliant on immigrant labour, particularly in the South East.
In London, it really is noteworthy to be served in a Costa or Starbucks by a white British person.

HackAttack · 31/05/2017 19:23

I'm a pretty high earner, particularly for the area I live in, and I don't mind an ni rise to save the NHS. I don't mind contributing to a happier, fairer society. It won't leave me on the breadline and I don't need to hoard money to feel happy. Why are high earners so opposed to closing the poverty gap??

Namechangedforthisobviously · 31/05/2017 19:33

Fucking bastard brexit! Why are there so many idiots in this mess of a country? I despair. Vote labour, it's better than the nightmare alternative.

If anyone's planning on voting Tory, just make sure you don't get old, poor or ill!

Reow · 31/05/2017 19:37

Boris and TM?

I can't believe this is what things have come to, or that anyone thinks this could possible be a good thing.

I will be voting labour, very confidently.

PeterhouseMS · 31/05/2017 19:47

Brexit will bring significantly reduced trade and severe austerity.

Theresa May will do her best to save the wealthy.
Education and healthcare will be privatised. Workers rights will be removed. Zero-hours contracts on a reduced minimum wage will be the norm as a measure to keep British businesses competitive abroad after trade tariffs are applied on our goods and services.

Jeremy Corbyn will not be able to lessen the effects of Brexit but he will spread the pain. He will do his best to make sure the cutbacks don't fall inordinately on the less well off.

GlassOfPort · 31/05/2017 20:20

The Labour manifesto assumes blithely that the high earners and the companies will hang around to be taxed

I suspect companies would much prefer a slight increase in corporation tax to a hard Brexit that would remove access to the single marker...the latter would certianly see them leaving in droves

Bearbehind · 31/05/2017 21:24

Ok, so I'm back to not voting for May come hell or high water.

I'm disgusted she can't debate her stance.

She won't take responsibility for anything whatever happens.

I was heartened by the clapping in support of anything that pointed out what a face this is on tonight's debate.

Maybe it's not the foregone conclusion it first appeared.......

OP posts:
FoxyRoxy · 31/05/2017 21:44

bear she was asked earlier today why she wasn't going to be appearing tonight and her reply was that Jeremy Corbyn should be spending less time worrying about how much he's on the telly and more about Brexit, which is what she's doing. It was horrendously awkward and cringe. There is absolutely no excuse for sending someone in a lower position than you to an interview for a job you want but that is essentially what she did tonight!

Bearbehind · 31/05/2017 21:52

It also transpires the person she sent was having to deal with the fact her father died this week.

Despicable.

TM has had 11 months to come up with a Brexit plan and has produced fuck all but it turns out tonight it was the top priority,

It truly sickens me.

OP posts:
christinarossetti · 31/05/2017 21:54

Having the arrogance to call this election then not even bother to turn up for the main debate is one of May's biggest downfalls.

Along with having the arrogance to not consult properly about the manifesto pledges or cost the manifesto.

Just a few short weeks ago, she was utterly convinced that people would vote for her because she wasn't Jeremy Corbyn. She honestly thought that she'd get a bigger mandate.

She wants people to put their trust in her to negotiate with Europe when she wouldn't even get on a platform with Corbyn.

Why, just why, would anyone do that?

Bearbehind · 31/05/2017 22:02

I have to say I agree with you christina

I also read that the EU are prepared to delay negiotiations for a short while if JC wins.

It seems that TM is far more of a hinderance than a help to us with negiotiations.

New blood to negotiate with Europe can only be helpful to Britain.

May and Johnson have completely got peoples' backs up. They're a laughing stock.

Killdora · 31/05/2017 22:45

I came back to see how you'd found the debate Bear Smile

Shakespearmint · 02/06/2017 14:15

Tories 'accountable' ? Ha !

Those Tories will be sailing away in their yachts . Read Owen Jones : The Establishment

wasonthelist · 02/06/2017 14:18

Life Long Tory is "considering voting Tory"

You couldn't make it up, although this is scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit.

scaryteacher · 02/06/2017 14:33

It's a shame that you want to judge politicians by how they appear on TV Christina, or how well they do on TV. Corbyn could come over smooth and polished, but I still wouldn't vote Labour because of his associates, his views on Trident, and the fact that politically he hasn't moved on since the 70s/80s; neither afaik, has he ever held down a job outside politics, unlike the PM.

I voted Leave, and the PM and David Davis are the ones I trust to deliver on it.
